Home / Uncategorized / A solid day’s work for Steve O’Dwyer, wins €50K Single Day HR at EPT Monte Carlo

It’s been a little over three months since Steve O’Dwyer last won a PokerStars €50K High Roller. Something had to give, didn’t it?

O’Dwyer, the champ

O’Dwyer took down the €50K Single Day High Roller in the Salle des Americas room today, which kicked off at 12:30pm and wrapped up around 12 hours later. His first bullet proved to be the only one he’d need, continuing a great year which started with a €50K victory at the PCA.

Despite entering heads-up play with a chip deficit, O’Dwyer managed to spin things around against his heads-up opponent, the ever-feared Nick Petrangelo. The two played small pots, and O’Dwyer grinded up a chip lead before the final two hand saw him secure victory. Petrangelo limped on the button, O’Dwyer raised to 300,000 on the button, and Petrangelo called for a A32 flop. O’Dwyer check-called 200,000 there and another 350,000 on the 5 turn, bringing the 7 on the river. O’Dwyer checked one more time and Petrangelo stuck a million chips in the middle, leaving himself about one big blind behind.

Nick Petrangelo

O’Dwyer had a tough decision to make. He tossed a time bank card in to buy some time, sat back, and started thinking over the hand. After about 45 seconds he said, “Nick, I think you’re full of shit.” He still didn’t call right away — but as the shot clock ran down, he called the bet and said, “Let’s see it.”

“You’ve got it,” said Petrangelo, tossing his cards in the muck. O’Dwyer showed Q5 for a lone pair of fives.

It’s all over

The following hand put Petrangelo all-in with Q5 against O’Dwyer’s JK. The board ran out 32QK10 and Petrangelo was eliminated.

Petrangelo won €467,410 for his runner up finish, while O’Dwyer won yet another PokerStars trophy, plus €676,300 to go with it. Not bad for a day’s work, Steve.

Yet another victory for O’Dwyer

This speedy high roller (live updates of which you can read through by scrolling down) got 30 unique entries and 11 re-entries, creating a prize pool of €1,988,910. That was to be split between the final six players.

Sam Greenwood won the Super High Roller last night for more than €1.5 million, but it always sucks to be a bubble boy. That role would belong to him tonight though, after he couldn’t win a race with ace-king against Nick Pertrangelo’s pocket sevens.

No cash this time for Greenwood

Once they were in the money, the ICM battle begun. You’d never heard so many different versions of “How much are you playing?”, as the final six tried to navigate their way up the pay jumps.

Rainer Kempe would ultimately be the first to fall. He jammed in the cutoff with J9 and Steffen Sontheimer called with KQ in the big blind. The board came 76103Q, giving Sontheimer a pair of queens, and Kempe collected €139,200.

Kempe says goodbye

The ICM war continued, at one point seeing Daniel Dvoress down to less than a big blind. Unfortunately for him, nobody else busted despite an all-in and call, and he was the next one to fall. He called all in from the small blind with A6 against Bonomo’s K9, and Bonomo flopped a straight on the JQ1087 board.

Daniel Dvoress

Dvoress banked €179,000, and then four-handed went on for a while. It would be Justin Bonomo next to bust though, after he jammed under the gun for 650,000 with K8, and Steve O’Dwyer thought for a little on the button before calling with KQ. The board ran out A3JQ4, hitting O’Dwyer’s queen and sending Bonomo out.

Bonomo falls

O’Dwyer now had the chip lead, but Petrangelo would re-take it when he busted Steffen Sontheimer in third. Petrangelo moved all in on the button with K4 and Sontheimer called with A3. The German was ahead, but the K3758 board changed that.

Steffen Sontheimer

Sontheimer won €298,300, while the heads-up counts began 2.1 million to 1.8 milion in Petrangelo’s favour. With the blinds at 40K/80K and then 50K/100K it might look there was still a decent amount of play. But remember; this was a big blind ante tournament, so the big blind was having to put in 160K/200K every time.

It took about an hour before O’Dwyer secured the win heads-up. Today, his hourly rate has been €56,538. Another day in the life of the lucky mango. –JS

12:25am: O’Dwyer wins €676,300, Petrangelo takes 2nd (€467,410)
Level 21 – Blinds 50,000/100,000 (BB ante 100,000)

After a cautious back-and-forth heads-up match with more than €200,000 difference between 1st and 2nd, we finally got a big hand that broke the tournament Steve O’Dwyer’s way.

Petrangelo limped on the button, O’Dwyer raised to 300,000 from the big blind, and Petrangelo called for a A32 flop. O’Dwyer check-called 200,000 there and another 350,000 on the 5 turn, bringing the 7 on the river. O’Dwyer checked one more time and Petrangelo stuck a million chips in the middle, leaving himself about one big blind behind.

The following hand put Petrangelo all-in with Q5 against O’Dwyer’s JK. The board ran out 32QK10 and Petrangelo was eliminated in second place. –JK

12:23m: Boat over boat
Level 21 – Blinds 50,000/100,000 (BB ante 100,000)

The blinds are up, but this one happened at the death knell of Level 20.

Nick Petrangelo limped the button and Steve O’Dwyer checked the big blind. A 97K flop fell, and both checked to the 9 turn. O’Dwyer checked, and Petrangelo led for 80,000. Call.

The river was the K and O’Dwyer checked again. Petrangelo checked it back and showed 96 for nines full. Unfortunately for him, O’Dwyer had K10 for kings full.

It’s now 3.1 million to O’Dwyer, and 1 million for Petrangelo. –JS

12:15am: Still going
Level 20 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (BB ante 80,000)

Steve O’Dwyer has managed re-take the chip lead, but not through any big hands we can report. He and Nick Petrangelo have been playing very small pots, not unlike what we saw in last night’s Super High Roller heads up between Sam Greenwood and Christoph Vogelsang.

O’Dwyer – 2.7 million
Petrangelo – 1.4 million
–JS

12am: O’Dwyer catches a boat
Level 20 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (BB ante 80,000)

Only one hand has gone all the way so far in this heads up, but despite losing it Petrangelo has managed to extend his chip lead.

It started with a button limp from Nick Petrangelo and a check from Steve O’Dwyer. The flop came J810 followed by the 8 turn, all of which was checked. But when the 2 river hit, O’Dwyer led for 360,000 and got a call.

He turned over 108 for a full house, and Petrangelo mucked.

Petrangelo – 2.5 million
O’Dwyer – 1.4 million
–JS

11:50pm: Steffen Sontheimer leaves in third (€298,300)
Level 20 – Blinds 40,000/80,000 (BB ante 80,000)

It’s now heads up as Steffen Sontheimer was eliminated in third. Nick Petrangelo moved all in on the button with K4 and Sontheimer called with A3. He was ahead, but the K3758 board changed that.

Sontheimer wins €298,300 for his efforts today. As for the other two, here are the rough heads-up counts:

Nick Petrangelo – 2.1 million
Steve O’Dwyer – 1.8 milion
–JS

Steffen Sontheimer

11:40pm: Justin Bonomo busts in fourth (€228,700)
Level 19 – Blinds 30,000/60,000 (BB ante 60,000)

We finally have a fourth-place finisher. Justin Bonomo jammed under the gun for 650,000 with K8, and Steve O’Dwyer thought for a little on the button before calling with KQ.

The board ran out A3JQ4, hitting O’Dwyer’s queen and sending Bonomo out.

O’Dwyer now takes the chip lead.

Steve O’Dwyer – 1.83 million
Nick Petrangelo – 1.79 million
Steffen Sontheimer – 480,000
–JS

11:35pm: Bonomo doubles! Then O’Dwyer doubles!
Level 19 – Blinds 30,000/60,000 (BB ante 60,000)

How long can this thing possibly go on four-handed? Well, a bit longer it turns out.

Steffen Sontheimer shoved the small blind with J4 and Justin Bonomo woke up in the big with 1010. A ten arrived on the flop, doubling Bonomo to around 950,000.

Then Bonomo shoved the small blind with 55 and Steve O’Dwyer snap-called his 540,000 with A7. There was a seven on the flop, and no five on the turn or river, and that meant another double. –JS

Four-handed play

11:30pm: Big swing for Petrangelo
Level 19 – Blinds 30,000/60,000 (BB ante 60,000)

The chip lead is back with long-time leader Nick Petrangelo after a huge pot versus Justin Bonomo. Petrangelo was all-in for 870,000 and held 1010 against Bonomo’s A3. A ten hit the flop and eventually locked it up.

Petrangelo’s got a big lead with 1.75 million, while Bonomo slips down to 550,000. –JS

11:20pm: Aces for Sontheimer, Jacks for O’Dwyer
Level 19 – Blinds 30,000/60,000 (BB ante 60,000)

Steffen Sontheimer is right back in this one. He picked up AA and was all in against Nick Petrangelo’s 910, blind versus blind. The aces held.

Petrangelo lost a few more a hand or two later, doubling up Steve O’Dwyer when his pocket nines couldn’t crack pocket jacks.

Somehow there are still four players! –JS

Name Country Chip Count
Justin Bonomo USA 1,100,000
Nick Petrangelo USA 1,000,000
Steffen Sontheimer Germany 950,000
Steve O’Dwyer Ireland 680,000

11:10pm: Doubles galore
Level 18 – Blinds 25,000/50,000 (BB ante 50,000)

We’re seeing crazy action at this point with only four players left and the blinds through the roof.

Steffen Sontheimer doubled on consecutive hands, first with K8 against Nick Petrangelo’s J6 and then with A10 against Justin Bonomo’s J2 thanks to a Broadway straight.

Then Justin Bonomo doubled through Nick Petrangelo, whose K4 started off dominated by Bonomo’s KQ and missed a straight draw to chop. Petrangelo doubled back on the next hand, though, when he jammed with pocket sixes and Bonomo called with 65. Bonomo also missed a straight draw, making their previous two hands a wash.

Things are moving quickly, and they’re only going to move faster with the blinds now moving up to 30,000/60,000. –JK

11:05pm: Whole lotta action sees Daniel Dvoress exit in fifth
Level 18 – Blinds 25,000/50,000 (BB ante 50,000)

Quite a bit has gone down since Rainer Kempe’s departure.

First, Justin Bonomo jammed the button and Daniel Dvoress called out of the big blind. It was K9 for Bonomo against JQ, and after the 94J9K board Bonomo had a full house.

That took Dvoress down to just 15,000, but then he more than quadrupled up the next hand. He was automatically all in from the small blind, and after Bonomo opened and everyone else folded it was Bonomo’s K9 against Dvoress’ Q8. The board ran queen-high, and Dvoress was back to 95,000.

The next hand he folded his button and not much else happened, but when he was in the cutoff he opted to limp for 50,000. It got to Steffen Sontheimer in the small blind and he shoved, before Bonomo shoved the big blind. Back to Dvoress, he got a count and saw that Sontheimer covered Bonomo. Dvoress folded.

Bonomo had KK against Sontheimer’s 69, and the pocket kings held up, taking Bonomo up to 1.1 million and Sontheimer down to 140,000.

With two players now super super short, it would be Dvoress who eventually busted. He called all in from the small blind with A6 against Bonomo’s K9 (his third important hand with king-nine), and Bonomo flopped a straight on the JQ1087 board.

Dvoress banks €179,000, and we’re down to four. –JS

Name Country Chip Count
Justin Bonomo USA 1,100,000
Nick Petrangelo USA 735,000
Steve O’Dwyer Ireland 674,000
Steffen Sontheimer Germany 140,000

10:50pm: Sontheimer busts Kempe in 6th
Level 18 – Blinds 25,000/50,000 (BB ante 50,000)

Rainer Kempe’s tournament is at its end. He jammed in the cutoff with J9 and Steffen Sontheimer called with KQ in the big blind. The board came 76103Q, giving Sontheimer a pair of queens and the pot. He’s now up to about 700,000. –JK

Kempe’s gone

10:42pm: O’Dwyer and Bonomo clash, twice
Level 18 – Blinds 25,000/50,000 (BB ante 50,000)

Steve O’Dwyer open-shoved under the gun for 480,000 and it folded around to Justin Bonomo in the big blind. He thought for around 20 seconds before deciding to make the call, which was for most of his chips too.

O’Dwyer – A10
Bonomo – KQ

The dealer put out five community cards in the 98863, which kept the ace-high in front. O’Dwyer doubled to 1.01 million after that one, while Bonomo was down to just 95,000.

He’d get it all in from the small blind the next hand holding J4, which O’Dwyer called out of the big with 78. The board ran out 106A26, and Bonomo doubled up. –JS

Bonomo’s still in

10:30pm: Dvoress doubles through Petrangelo
Level 17 – Blinds 20,000/40,000 (BB ante 40,000)

Daniel Dvoress just picked up pocket kings under the gun and got in against Nick Petrangelo’s pocket jacks. No jacks on the board and Dvoress doubles to 530,000. Petrangelo still has 735,000. That puts the entire table between 10 and 18 big blinds apiece. –JK

10:20pm: ICM implications
Level 17 – Blinds 20,000/40,000 (BB ante 40,000)

You can really see the ICM cogs turning in the players’ heads six-handed.

Justin Bonomo moved all in from the small blind, and Steve O’Dwyer (bb) winced. He didn’t count Bonomo’s stack though; he was looking over at Daniel Dvoress and Rainer Kempe, the two shortest stacks, to get a handle on their chip counts. Eventually he folded.

Steffen Sontheimer shoved the next hand from the cutoff and now it was Dvoress’ turn to crunch some ICM math. Whatever the numbers or his cards were, they led him to fold.

Finally it folded to Steve O’Dwyer on the button and with only Dvoress and Kempe in front of him he shipped it in. Two folds later, he shipped the pot too. –JS

Steve O’Dwyer

10:05pm: Let’s do this!
Level 17 – Blinds 20,000/40,000 (BB ante 40,000)

It’s time for more poker. With nobody stacked deeper than 33 big blinds, this could be the beginning of determining who gets the small payouts and who has a shot at the title. –JK

9:55pm: Break time

Six still remain as head on another 15-minute break. –JS

Name Country Chip Count
Nick Petrangelo USA 1,320,000
Steve O’Dwyer Ireland 674,000

Steffen Sontheimer Germany 651,000
Rainer Kempe Germany 402,000
Daniel Dvoress Canada 352,000

9:45pm: O’Dwyer doubles through Petrangelo
Level 16 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (BB ante 30,000)

With all these all-in bets getting through, one of them has to get a call sooner or later, right?

Steve O’Dwyer opened the action all-in from the cutoff for 412,000. Nick Petrangelo called in the big blind and had the best of it:

O’Dwyer: J10
Petrangelo: A8

The board ran out 6105K7, giving O’Dwyer a pair of tens and the pot. He jumps to 899,000 with the win, while Petrangelo falls to 1.1 million. We’re heading to a break and the 1K chips are being colored up. –JK

9:40pm: Petrangelo keeps pushing the action
Level 16 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (BB ante 30,000)

The rich get richer as Nick Petrangelo wins a big pot from Steve O’Dwyer.

Petrangelo opened to 60,000 from the cutoff which Justin Bonomo called from the small blind. O’Dwyer came along from the big too and the three went to a J23 flop. It checked to Petrangelo and he continued for 70,000, which only O’Dwyer called.

The 7 hit the turn and it checked to the raiser once more. Petrangelo fired a second time, this time for 170,000, and O’Dwyer made the call after using one of his time bank cards to see the 2 river.

The 425,000 Petrangelo bet when checked was essentially an all-in, as O’Dwyer only had around 420,000 behind. He didn’t take too long to fold, and Petrangelo moves up to 1.65 million. –JS

9:25pm: O’Dwyer trips Dvoress
Level 16 – Blinds 15,000/30,000 (BB ante 30,000)

We’ve moved up once more and the game is only getting tighter. Any hand that goes past the flop is noteworthy at this point, so here’s the last one we had.

Steve O’Dwyer limped in from the small blind and Daniel Dvoress checked to see a JJ8 flop. Both players checked there before O’Dwyer led for 30,000 on the 10 turn. Dvoress called that bet and then, after some thought, another 100,000 on the 5 river. O’Dwyer turned up J7 for the flopped trip jacks and took down the pot.

O’Dwyer is now on 600,000, while Dvoress slips to 300,000. –JK

Daniel Dvoress

9:22pm: Another double for Sontheimer
Level 15 – Blinds 10,000/25,000 (BB ante 25,000)

Safely into the money, Steffen Sontheimer has just managed to double up through Justin Bonomo. Sontheimer shoved with 108 and was called by Bonomo’s AQ, and the 8554J board paired his eight.

Sontheimer now has 555,000, while Bonomo has roughly the same at 580,000. –JS

9:15pm: Greenwood’s our bubble boy
Level 15 – Blinds 10,000/25,000 (BB ante 25,000)

Sam Greenwood banked €1.52 million last night when he won the Super High Roller. Less than 24 hours later, he almost made the money in another High Roller too.

Alas for Greenwood, he’s just become the last player to leave this one with no cash. After Nick Petrangelo opened to 50,000 in the cutoff, Justin Bonomo called from the small blind before Greenwood shoved for 263,000 out of the big. Petrangelo made the call, and Bonomo let it go.

Petrangelo – 77
Greenwood – AK

It was potentially a €139,200 flip for Greenwood. If he doubled up and someone else went out in seventh, he’d be six-figures richer. Unfortunately for him, and fortunately for Petrangelo, the 691098 gave the sevens a straight.

“Sorry Sammy,” said Petrangelo as he raked in the chips, bringing his total to 1.4 million. Greenwood didn’t seem too down in the dumps. In fact, his first question was whether he could hop in the Main Event and continue the grind. –JS

Onto the next one for Greenwood

9:05pm: Sontheimer stays alive
Level 15 – Blinds 10,000/25,000 (BB ante 25,000)

The all-in bets continue, as do the folds. But Steffen Sontheimer was short enough to call with a lot of hands in the big blind when chip leader Nick Petrangelo opened all-in from the small blind, never mind an ace. Turns out Petrangelo jammed with 93. That made a pair of nines on the A259Q board but couldn’t beat Sontheimer’s diamond flush. Sontheimer climbs to 253,000, and Petrangelo drops to about 1 million. –JK

8:48pm: When a six looks like a queen
Level 14 – Blinds 10,000/20,000 (BB ante 20,000)

Nick Petrangelo has the chip lead and is min-opening every hand. If he does it, that probably means it’s the right thing to do.

So this hand was no different. He opened to 40,000 from the hijack and Justin Bonomo called on the button. The flop fell 456 and it checked through to the 2 turn. Now Petrangelo led for 45,000, and Bonomo called.

The turn was the A and Petrangelo slowed down. He checked, and Bonomo checked behind. Petrangelo turned over Q6 for a pair of sixes, but that was no good; Bonomo had rivered an ace with his A6.

The players had some back-and-forth about Petrangelo’s hand strength. “I thought I had queens,” he joked, as he went to min-open to 40,000 in the next hand. Everyone folded, and he showed the AJ.

He’s up to 1.3 million. –JS

Chip-leading Petrangelo

8:35pm: Bonomo doubles through Sontheimer
Level 14 – Blinds 10,000/20,000 (BB ante 20,000)

The bubble has been inspiring a lot of all-in moves, as we told you a few minutes ago. For the five hands before Steffen Sontheimer and Bonomo clashed, that move ended the action. But both players picked up pocket pairs on the sixth and ended up with Bonomo moving his final 388,000 chips in the middle. Sontheimer called and the cards went on their backs:

Bonomo: KK
Sontheimer: 1010

The 2J35A board was devoid of tens — bad news for Sontheimer but music to Bonomo’s ears. Bonomo chips up to 826,000 with the win; Sontheimer drops to 250,000. –JK

8:30pm: Whole lotta shove
Level 14 – Blinds 10,000/20,000 (BB ante 20,000)

It may be a €139,200 bubble, but that hasn’t stopped us from seeing all-ins left and right.

First Nick Petrangelo opened to 32,000 (as he has been fairly frequently), and Sam Greenwood shoved from the big blind. Petrangelo sighed and showed the A as he folded.

A few hands later and Justin Bonomo shoved. It folded all the way through. “Not even a sweat,” pointed out Petrangelo.

And finally Rainer Kempe just put his last few hundred thousand at risk from the button. No callers this time though. –JS

8:20pm: Blinds up
Level 13 – Blinds 10,000/20,000 (BB ante 20,000)

As if the pressure of the money bubble weren’t enough, we’re moving onward and upward yet again. –JK

8:15pm: Petrangelo busts Chidwick
Level 13 – Blinds 8,000/16,000 (BB ante 16,000)

Stephen Chidwick just got in on the heavy end of a coin-flip but his tournament is over anyway.

Rainer Kempe opened the action under the gun for 35,000 and Nick Petrangelo, next to act, made it 105,000 to go. Then Chidwick, in the lojack, moved all-in. Kempe got out of the way but Petrangelo quickly called.

Chidwick: JJ
Petrangelo: AK

The board came down QQ8A5 to give Petrangelo an ace-high flush and send Chidwick to the exit. Petrangelo climbs to approximately 1.2 million chips with that win.

We’re now down to seven players, which means the next player out will be the last to leave without a cash. –JK

Chidwick soft-bubbles

8:05pm: Peace time
Level 13 – Blinds 8,000/16,000 (BB ante 16,000)

There hasn’t been much action to report since Stephen Chidwick’s double up. It is dinner time after all, and everyone’s currently ordering their grub.

Chidwick did play a hand against Justin Bonomo that is the most reportable one of the past 15 minutes. Bonomo made it 35,000 from the UTG+1 seat and Chidwick defended his big blind, bringing an A48 flop.

It checked to Bonomo who continued for 25,000, only for Chidwick to raise it to 65,000. That got a fold.

But other than that it’s relatively peaceful on the felt, especially compared with the madness of this tournament so far. –JS

7:55pm: Chidwick doubles through Greenwood
Level 13 – Blinds 8,000/16,000 (BB ante 16,000)

Stephen Chidwick is no longer the short stack after a hand against Sam Greenwood.

On the first hand back from the break Nick Petrangelo opened the action for 38,000 in the lojack and Chidwick jammed for 129,000 in the hijack. Then Sam Greenwood moved all-in from the small blind for more, clearing Petrangelo out of the way and setting up a coin-flip:

Chidwick: 77
Greenwood: KQ

Things looked bad for Chidwick after the Q48 flop gave Greenwood a pair of queens. Then the 6 turn and 5 river made him an eight-high straight for the win. Greenwood tumbles to 286,000 and Chidwick moves up to 313,000. –JK

7:53pm: ANNND we’re back
Level 13 – Blinds 8,000/16,000 (BB ante 16,000)

Ready for another two-hour stretch? So are we. –JS

7:33pm: Take 20

The final eight have gone on a 20-minute break, having decided to skip the planned 75-minute dinner break. Back soon. –JS

Have a stretch

7:32pm: Petrangelo doubles through O’Dwyer
Level 12 – Blinds 6,000/12,000 (BB ante 12,000)

Steve O’Dwyer’s chip lead has been short lived.

He’d opened to 28,000 only for Nick Petrangelo to shove for 414,000, which O’Dwyer called quickly. The two were flipping with AQ for Petrangelo versus O’Dwyer’s JJ, and the A2384 board paired Petrangelo’s ace to keep him alive.

Not only is he alive, he’s now chip leader with around 830,000, while O’Dwyer dips to 525,000. –JS

7:20pm: Dvoress pushes off Greenwood
Level 12 – Blinds 6,000/12,000 (BB ante 12,000)

Picking up the action on a 4A53 board, Daniel Dvoress led for 50,000 from the big blind seat into Sam Greenwood, who was on the button. The J river got a shove from Dvoress for 346,000, which put Greenwood to the test for a massive chunk of his chips.

Two time bank cards later, and Greenwood opted to lay it down. He’s now on 481,000, while Dvoress rises to 610,000. –JS

7:10pm: O’Dwyer takes the lead
Level 12 – Blinds 6,000/12,000 (BB ante 12,000)

Sam Greenwood and Steve O’Dwyer are seated next to each other and have had a few clashes over the last level.

In the first, Greenwood raised to 24,000 in the hijack and O’Dwyer called in the cutoff. Greenwood check-called 20,000 on the AJ4 flop and both checked the 2 turn. Greenwood fired 35,000 after the 3 river. O’Dwyer let his hand go but made up for the loss with two steals in the next orbit.

In the second, Greenwood called in the small blind and O’Dwyer checked in the big blind. Greenwood led for 16,000 on the 28K flop and called when O’Dwyer raised to 45,000. Greenwood check-called another 70,000 on the turn and then, after some thought, a final 102,000 after the 6 river. O’Dwyer tabled K2 for the flopped two pair and Greenwood mucked his hand.

After all that, O’Dwyer is on 1.1 million; Greenwood, 560,000. –JK

6:50pm: Antonius gone in ninth
Level 11 – Blinds 5,000/10,000 (BB ante 10,000)

They’re now down to eight and two away from the money after Patrik Antonius was just eliminated.

Justin Bonomo had opened the cutoff to 22,000 and Sam Greenwood called on the button. That enticed Patrik Antonius in from the big blind, and the flop fell 625. Bonomo continued for 25,000 after Antonius checked, and Greenwood made the call. Antonius then started thinking for a while, using up one of his time bank cards before moving all in. Bonomo folded quickly, and Greenwood called just as fast.

Antonius – 96
Greenwood – 99

Greenwood was ahead with his overpair, and Antonius couldn’t catch up on the 8 turn or 3 river. He’s out, while Greenwood increases to 837,000. –JS

Antonius leaves the finale first

6:45pm: Ay-yahhhhh
Level 11 – Blinds 5,000/10,000 (BB ante 10,000)

You know I just made a joke about Sam Greenwood’s heater being over? Scratch that from the records entirely.

Steffen Sontheimer had opened to 25,000 on the button and Greenwood called from the big blind. They went to a 6105 flop, on which Greenwood check-called 25,000 to see the A turn. Now when Greenwood checked Sontheimer went for 90,000, but that was called too.

The river was the 6 and Greenwood checked a third time. Sontheimer followed suit, and saw Greenwood roll over Q6.

“Ah-yahhhhh,” sighed Sontheimer, as he saw Greenwood had hit trips on the river. He’s down to 570,000 now, while Greenwood has just under 540,000. –JS

6:40pm: The river saves Antonius
Level 11 – Blinds 5,000/10,000 (BB ante 10,000)

Sam Greenwood’s heater must have come to an end. That being said, he’s still at this final table, so the flames haven’t officially gone out.

Sam Greenwood made it 20,000 under the gun and Antonius jammed for 105,000 two seats over. Back to Greenwood, he snap-called with AJ, trailing Antonius’ AK.

The 2J10 flop helped Greenwood though. Antonius would need a king or a queen to survive, and after the 9 turn the Q river hit to save him. –JS

6:35pm: Chidwick staying alive
Level 11 – Blinds 5,000/10,000 (BB ante 10,000)

Stephen Chidwick has one of the shortest stacks at our final table after his loss to Sam Greenwood a few minutes ago, but he isn’t going anywhere just yet.

First he moved all-in under the gun for 98,000 and cleared out the field to steal the blinds and ante. On the next hand he was in the big blind and the lone caller of Steve O’Dwyer’s lojack raise to 17,000. Chidwick check-called 14,000 on the A9J flop and both men checked the 4 turn, bringing the 6 on the river. Chidwick didn’t take long to move all-in, pushing O’Dwyer out of the pot.

Chidwick is now up to 174,000. –JK

6:25pm: Final table time
Level 10 – Blinds 4,000/8,000 (BB ante 8,000)

“But wait, I thought there were 11 players remaining?” you might be wondering. Not no more there ain’t. Allow me to fill you in.

First, Stephen Chidwick moved all in for 230,000 in the UTG+1 seat over the top of a 16,000 UTG open from Sam Greenwood. It then folded to Daniel Dvoress in the small blind and he called in for just under 150,000, which got a fold from Greenwood.

Chidwick – 99
Dvoress – AA

The aces held comfortably after the 107255 board, doubling Dvoress and bringing Chidwick down to 78,000. He moved all-in the next hand, but the shove got through.

Meanwhile, on the other table Igor Kurganov was getting up to leave as we turned around. He’d got all his chips in with pocket sevens versus Justin Bonomo’s pocket jacks, which remained the best hand.

Kurganov KO’d

And in the hand after that, Erik Siedel was all-in holding 78 against Steffen Sontheimer’s A3. We’re not sure when the money went in, but there was a 4J7106 board by the end to give Sontheimer the nut flush.

Down to nine. Final table time. –JS

Seidel falls

6:12pm: Kempe corrals Kanit
Level 10 – Blinds 4,000/8,000 (BB ante 8,000)

Mustapha Kanit’s tournament is all done, thanks to Rainer Kempe. The chips all went in before the flop and we arrived to see their cards face-up on the table:

Kanit: AQ
Kempe: AA

The board ran out 268J2 and Kanit headed for the exit. Kempe climbs to 450,000 with that win. –JK

6:10pm: About those Benjamins
Level 10 – Blinds 4,000/8,000 (BB ante 8,000)

Let’s talk cash. Moolah. Bunsen burner (nice little earner).

The prize pool has been confirmed at €1,988,910, and that will be split between the final six players. There’s €676,300 for the champ, not bad for one day’s work! –JS

6:00pm: O’Dwyer doubles through Sontheimer
Level 9 – Blinds 3,000/6,000 (BB ante 6,000)

Steve O’Dwyer just ended Steffen Sontheimer’s stay at the top of the chip count leaderboard, at least for now.

O’Dwyer was in the big blind and Sontheimer in the cutoff with about about 25,000 in the pot when the flop came JA8. O’Dwyer check-called 28,000 there and checked again on the 10 turn. Sontheimer continued his aggression with a bet of 85,000 and O’Dwyer called once again.

O’Dwyer checked one more time on the 5 river and Sontheimer, after using a time bank card, set out a stack of green 25,000-denomination chips — enough to set O’Dwyer in should he call. O’Dwyer used a time bank card of his own before tossing a chip in to call. Sontheimer showed K-T for a turned pair of tens, but O’Dwyer’s K-J had flopped a pair of jacks and took the pot.

Sontheimer falls to 420,000 with that loss. O’Dwyer climbs to 770,000. We’re now up to Level 10, with 4,000/8,000 blinds. –JK

5:50pm: Greenwood KOs Vogelsang and Ahadpour
Level 9 – Blinds 3,000/6,000 (BB ante 6,000)

It’s been about 15 hours since Sam Greenwood eliminated Christoph Vogelsang to win the €100K Super High Roller.

Fifteen hours later, and Vogelsang was being eliminated by Greenwood yet again. But this time he wasn’t alone.

After Greenwood opened from early position, Vogelsang shoved in the cutoff for around 20 big blinds, and Behzad Ahadpour called all-in from the big blind for his last 115,000. Greenwood snap-called both with his JJ, which was ahead of Ahadpour’s JK and Vogelsang’s AJ.

“Wow, I’m more live than I thought,” said Vogelsang, hoping for an ace. He wouldn’t hit one on the 286910 runout though, and Greenwood’s jacks remained best.

We’re down to 13, and Greenwood is up to 610,000. –JS

Greenwood’s tear continues

5:45pm: Sontheimer clips Seidel’s cowboys
Level 9 – Blinds 3,000/6,000 (BB ante 6,000)

Steffen Sontheimer’s tournament-leading stack continues to grow.

Sontheimer opened for 13,000 under the gun and called when Erik Seidel re-raised to 31,000 in the hijack. Sontheimer called and checked the 2A2 flop, then called Seidel’s 15,000-chip bet. Boith players checked the 7 turn and then did the same on the 7 river. Seidel turned over KK but Sontheimer’s AQ won with aces and sevens.

Sontheimer climbs to 900,000 with that win, and Seidel slips to 160,000. –JK

5:40pm: O’Dwyer takes one from Igor
Level 9 – Blinds 3,000/6,000 (BB ante 6,000)

Steve O’Dwyer opened the action for 14,000 in the hijack and Igor Kurganov called on the button. O’Dwyer bet 26,000 on the 8106 on the flop and Kurganov called, bringing the A on the turn. O’Dwyer maintained his line and bet 54,000. Kurganov used a time bank card — the bet was about a third of the chips he had left — and finally decided to fold.

O’Dwyer moves to 420,000, Kurganov to 175,000. Meanwhile, the once short-stacked Ole Schemion has busted, taking us down to 15 players. –JK

We’re back to play more poker here at the Salle des Americas. Late registration closed on the break with no more entries, giving us an official field of 41 entries, including 11 re-entries. And where there were 17 players remaining, there are now 16 — Timothy Adams busted on the first hand back and we’re now re-drawing for the last two tables. –JK

5:05pm: Greenwood riding the rush
Level 8 – Blinds 2,500/5,000 (BB ante 5,000)

Sam Greenwood’s hot streak continues. We arrived at the table with about 100,000 chips in the pot and Greenwood, in the big blind, facing down under-the-gun player Mustapha Kanit with the turn just having been dealt on a 4J73 board. Both players checked, bringing the 3 on the river. Greenwood bet 45,000 this time and sent Kanit into the tank. He used two time bank cards before finally calling, only to muck when Greenwood rolled over 99.

Greenwood moves up to about 390,000, and Kanit drops to 265,000. We’re off to a 15-minute break now, with late registration closing at the end of it. –JK

5pm: Big pot for Petrangelo
Level 8 – Blinds 2,500/5,000 (BB ante 5,000)

With just a few minutes left before the end of Level 8 and the end of registration, Nick Petrangelo has taken down a huge pot which sent Jean-Noel Thorel to the rail.

Picking up the action on the turn of the K398 board, Thorel moved all in (amount unknown) and both Petrangelo and Kempe called. The 7 landed on the river and Petrangelo led for 73,000, which after some thinking Kempe would call.

Petrangelo rolled over 23 for a rivered flush, and that was best against Kempe’s J10 for a rivered straight. Thorel had the 109 and hit the rail for a second time today.

We’ll have full chip counts shortly as players go on break. –JS

4:50pm: Greenwood kills Kenney
Level 8 – Blinds 2,500/5,000 (BB ante 5,000)

Bryn Kenney’s second bullet didn’t last long.

The action on his final hand moved quickly. Sam Greenwood opened for 10,000 in the cutoff and Kenney, just as we approached the table, re-raised on the button — he either made it 20,000 or moved in over the top, but it all happened so fast it was hard to tell. In the end it didn’t matter because he ended up all-in with A10 against Greenwood’s AK. The board ran out 5K827 and that was it for Kenney in this tournament. –JK

4:45pm: Double up for Muehloecker
Level 8 – Blinds 2,500/5,000 (BB ante 5,000)

Thomas Muehloecker was short. Like, less than six-big blinds kinda short.

He open-jammed under the gun for around 29,000 and it folded to Bryn Kenney in the big blind who made the call. It was Muehloecker’s A6 against Kenney’s K7, and the board ran out 59254 to keep Muehloecker in front. –JS

4:41pm: Antonius in the building
Level 8 – Blinds 2,500/5,000 (BB ante 5,000)

Monaco resident and recent crusher of high rollers Patrik Antonius has just sat down on his first bullet. That brings the total entries up to 41, with 11 re-entries and 21 remaining. –JS

4:35pm: Bon voyage, Mikita
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

We’re not sure what Mikita Badziakouski’s plans are this afternoon, but unless he’s going to play the €1,000 PLO they don’t include much more time in the Salle des Americas.

Badziakouski was in the big blind facing a raise to 8,000 from Nick Petrangelo in the cutoff. Badziakouski let his time bank run all the way down before announcing himself all-in for 46,000 and Petrangelo snap-called.

Petrangelo: JJ
Badziakouski: A5

The board ran out 98327 to bring Badziakouski’s tournament to its end.

“That’s what you get for needling me for outlasting me,” said the recently ousted Isaac Haxton, who was still sitting nearby. “Only one more hand!”

We’re moving on to the 2,500/5,000 level now. –JK

Badziakouski (right) with Sam Greenwood (left)

4:30pm: Haxton and Teltscher gone
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

Two simultaneous eliminations to tell you about.

On one table, Isaac Haxton was all in for around 50,000 with J10 against Rainer Kempe’s K10. The 379AQ board kept the king-high in front, and with that Haxton’s tournament is over (he had already re-entered).

At the same time Mark Teltscher was busting on another table. He open-jammed for 56,000 and was isolated when Christoph Vogelsang re-shoved with the bigger stack. Teltscher was in front with AK versus A8, but the 741086 runout paired Vogelsang.

Kempe is now chipleading with 560,000, while Vogelsang is up to around 140,000. –JS

4:25pm: Schemion folds to Bonomo
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

Justin Bonomo’s second bullet is off to a decent start. We arrived to the table with a 27,000-chip bet sitting in front of him in the small blind and 53,000 in front of Ole Schemion under the gun, with the action back to Bonomo. Bonomo called and the flop came 2A10.

Bonomo checked the flop and Schemion, after some consideration, bet 25,000. Bonomo bought himself a minute and a half of time with two time bank cards before announcing himself all-in. Schemion asked for a count — 84,000 — and used a time bank card of his own before eventually opting to fold.

That boosts Bonomo to 225,000. Schemion drops to 156,000. –JK

4:20pm: Back for more
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

Erik Seidel, Timothy Adams and Bryn Kenney have strolled back into the Salle des Americas, ready to sit for bullet no.2. –JS

4:18pm: Ahadpour hope crushed
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

“Oh boy,” sighed Behzad Ahadpour, after his 42,000 hijack shove was called by Orpen Kisacikoglu.

Ahadpour turned his AQ, and saw he was ahead of AJ. “Oh wait, there’s hope!”

Alas for Ahadpour, the 86J paired Kisacikoglu and left him drawing thin. The A turn changed nothing, and there’d be no queen on the river to save him.

Kisacikoglu is up to 170,000, while Ahadpour still has the option to re-enter. –JS

4:10pm: Badziakouski slipping
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

Mikita Badziakouski is already on his second and final bullet. He’s going to need some help if he wants to stick around, but Stephen Chidwick isn’t giving him any.

Badziakouski limped in from the small blind and Chidwick checked in the big blind, taking us to the 89A flop. Badziakouski led for 4,000 and Chidwick called. Both players checked the Q turn and Badziakouski checked again on the 4 river. Chidwick bet 20,000 and put the action back to Badziakouski. He looked frustrated, picking his cards up off the table and squeezing them a few times before tossing them into the muck.

That takes Badziakouski down to just 45,000 from his 100,000-chip starting stack. –JK

4:07pm: Bring you up to speed
Level 7 – Blinds 2,000/4,000 (BB ante 4,000)

Here’s what’s happened so far.

We have a total of 35 entries right now as we’re about to enter Level 7. Registration closes in one hour, and six players have opted to re-enter so far.

Dominik Nitsche has already fired two bullets and busted, so he won’t be back. Nor will David Peters, who just busted to current chip leader Steffen Sontheimer. Peters had bet 32,000 on a 3KJ10 board, only for Sontheimer to set him all-in for around 90,000 total. Peters made the call with Q9 for a straight, but Sontheimer had a flush with his 54 which held after the K river.

Isaac Haxton, Rainer Kempe, Justin Bonomo and Mikita Badziakouski are all on their second bullets, and things aren’t looking good for the latter. Badziakouski is sitting with just 32,000 right now.

John Juanda and Erik Seidel have both busted their first bullets, but still have a single re-entry option available.

Sontheimer leads with 500,000 after the Peters bust, followed by Mustapha Kanit with 380,000. –JS
