Andrey Andreev leading the high rollers
The High Rollers bagged up late tonight. After ten levels yesterday they played another ten today, turning that original starting field of 215 into a last 12. There are a lot of tired faces, but here’s who will be back to play to a winner tomorrow.

Andrey Andreev (Russia) 2,270,000
Charlie Carrel (United Kingdom) 1,534,000
Dario Sammartino (Italy) 1,300,000
Jeremy Ausmus (United States) 1,126,000
Yingui Li (China) 791,000
Martin Jacobson (Sweden) 628,000
Max Altergott (Germany) 559,000
Dan Smith (United States) 486,000
Imad Derwiche (France) 470,000
Dominik Nitsche (Germany) 365,000
Steve O’Dwyer (Ireland) 356,000

It’s Russian player Andreev who leads, closing on 2,270,000 tonight. Charlie Carrel, who had a break out performance in this same event in Malta last month, is some way behind but second in chips while Dario Sammartino, who came fourth in the super high roller, and 17th in the Main Event, will return in third place.

But one other player deserves a hat tip for an almost unfathomable performance.

As we wrote earlier, Dan Smith played most of the evening session with food poisoning. It wasn’t a pretty sight, with Smith confined to the proximity of a bin and a bathroom. But remarkably he played on, even though he could barely keep in his seat. He looked dreadful, but still managed to stare down opponents. He played well ill. Imagine what he could do healthy?

Elsewhere there was plenty going on to keep people busy in the tournament room and beyond. While the €500 8-Game came to a close (results below), there was also the Escalator taking place, an event tin which five minutes was added to the length of a level every three. As the clock struck 2.30am it was Italian Rocco Palumbo, with an enthusiastic rail, who took the title and a first prize in excess of €71,000.

Over in the America Room the €500 Deepstack played to a winner, while the €200 Monaco Megastack completed its first day with the field of 108 cut to 12. They transfered to the main tournament room to play an extra level tonight, so keen were the survivors. They’ll return and play to a winner tomorrow.
