Former EPT Grand Final winner Pieter de Korver has won the Berlin Cup claiming his first major title since the EPT Grand Final four years ago.
De Korver topped a field of 911 players to take the lion’s share of the big money after a three-way chop gifted him €145,400. Runner-up Sebastian Gohr pocketed €93,600 and 3rd place finisher Anatoly Filatov got a chunkier €126,000, showing why it can make a lot of sense to agree to a chop. The final table of the €1,100 event held two EPT champions in De Korver and the mercurial Vladimir Geshkenbein. As noted earlier, it was not your average side event.
De Korver’s last silverware lift took place in Monaco back in Season 5 with a heads-up victory over American Matt Woodward to take down the €2,300,000 first place prize. It made him the fourth Dutchman to win an EPT title, but the following couple of years were relatively dry in comparison.
Following a 2009 haul of more than $3,000,000, 2010 provided live scores of ‘just’ $136,888 and 2011 a miserly $67,889. The back end of last year, however, saw a turn in tournament fortunes with a runner-up finish in the Masters Classics of Poker for €171,720 and a 3rd place for €100,000 in the Hold’em Challenge Winter Edition. Those two big ‘almost’ finishes looked to have bundled added emotion onto the Dutchman who was more than a little dewy-eyed during his post-win interview with the video blog team (see above).
Congratulations to De Korver who plays his first EPT in a couple of years tomorrow.
