9:37pm: Day 1 done, Fuentes leads the pack Day 1 of the LAPT Punta del Este has come to an end, with 145 of the 307 starters returning tomorrow to play on. Uruguay’s own Martin Fuentes made a late-evening surge, rising to the top of the leaderboard with 118,000 in chips to end the day. Close behind him are Cesar Mostafa, Jose Gonzalez, and Ernesto Panno, all with about 110,000 each.

9:15pm: Queen you don’t want to be Maria ‘maridu’ Mayrinck lost two coinflips towards the end of the evening to slip to under 42K in chips.
“I’m the queen of suck,” she happily remarked.
8:55pm: BrenesWatch Roberto Brenes is out. His father, Humberto, and his uncle Alex are both still alive. They are both expected to advance to Day 2 barring any horrendous accidents during the closing minutes of Level 8.
8:45pm: Gonzalez el gigante Jose Gonzalez is nearing the top of the leaderboard as we near the end of Day 1 and he got there on one helluva hand. Gonzalez opened for a raise to 3,800 from middle position and the big blind, misunderstanding the amount of his raise, put out 5,600, intending to make the call. A floor supervisor was called in to make a ruling and declared the big blind’s action as a minimum raise. The big blind put out an additional 1,200 chips, making it 6,800 to go. Gonzalez made the call.
Both players checked the Q♠9♥ 7♣ flop. When the J♣ hit the turn, the big blind checked and Gonzalez bet 7,000. The big blind immediately moved all in for an additional 15,200 and Gonzalez made the call. The big blind turned up 7♥ 7♦ for bottom set, while Gonzalez showed A♥ 10♠for a gutshot straight draw. By now, I think you know what the river was.
The K♥ spiked, Gonzalez making a Broadway straight. His opponent, gutted by the beat, couldn’t believe what just happened.
“He called me with…THAT?” he wondered aloud, before making a very gracious exit, even shaking Gonzalez’s hand.
The hand took Gonzalez north of 110,000 in chips.
8:38pm: De Leon done and dusted Down to 7,300 in chips, Christian De Leon pushed all-in for 7,300 from the big blind behind two limpers. The first limper called and the second limper folded from the small blind. De Leon’s A♣ 4♥ was a favorite against J♦ 10♥ , but it was all but over on the flop, which came down K♣ Q♦ 9♦ , giving his opponent a straight. The turn was the Q♥ , the river was the 5â™ , and De Leon made a gracious exit, shaking hands around the table.
8:33pm: Never bluffs The volume of chatter at Humberto Brenes’ table has been increasing steadily over the last hour. After being inactive for most of the afternoon, Humberto found himself in another pot. He opened for a raise and the big blind defended. The flop was 5â™ 4♣ 2♦ . The player in the big blind fired out a bet approximately two-thirds of the pot. Humberto massaged his stack for a few seconds before he smoothly slid his entire stack towards the middle of the table. His opponent sighed and folded. Humberto rattled off a couple of sentences in unintelligible Spanish before he said, “OK, I’ll let you see one card.”
He pushed both of his concealed cards towards his opponent, who flipped over one card exposing the 3â™ .
“I told you, Humberto shouted. “Humberto never bluffs!”
8:18pm: Once more, with feeling Our 178 remaining players are back in action for the last level of the day.
8:00pm: Color-up break: The green 25-denomination chips are being colored up. While the staff removes the green chips, the players are heading on a break. Action should resume in approximately 15 minutes.

7:40pm: No-show Humberto Humberto Brenes might be finally waking up from his slumber. That bodes well for Humberto fans, but I dunno if that is a good thing for his tablemates. My momma always said, “Let sleeping dogs lie.” In this case, the dog is a blood-thirsty shark from Costa Rica.
When a player opened for a 1,500 raise, Brenes shoved all in from his big blind for 15K. His opponent tanked for a few minutes before he folded.
“You gonna show me?” asked Brenes’ opponent after he flipped over the J♣ and tossed his other card into the muck.
“Which one do you want to see?” asked Brenes. “The good one? Or the bad one?”
“How about you show both?”
“No. No. You get the good one or the bad one.”
Brenes’ opponent insisted on seeing both cards. Unwilling to comply with his wishes, Brenes tossed away his hand and opted not to show.
7:20pm: Prize pool and payout information The prize pool and payout information for the LAPT Punta del Este has been released. 307 players entered this event creating a prize pool of $1,042,068. 48 players will be paid with the winner earning $279,330.

7:08pm: Maridu scores a KO Right before the break, Maria “Maridu” Mayrinck got a nice chip infusion, courtesy of Diego Serrano. On a K♦ 10♦ 9♣ 2♥ board, Mayrinck fired out a huge bet, and after a bit of hemming and hawing, Serrano tossed his last 6,300 chips into the pot. Serrano had nothing but a flush draw with 4♦ 5♦ while Mayrinck was well ahead with A♦ K♣ for top pair, top kicker. The 6♣ hit the river, missing Serrano, and Mayrinck raked in the pot, taking her stack up to 46,000.
7:05pm: Players return from break Cards are in the air for the final two levels of the evening. Blinds are up to 300-600 with a 75 ante.
