Let me tell you a little something about Uruguay — the locals know how to throw a party.

I have attended enough PokerStars-sponsored “welcome parties” to notice the similarities; delicious local cuisine, the constant flow of liquor, and a dozen models in sleek black dresses greeting guests with double kisses.

However, the revelry at the Guappa nightclub in downtown Punta del Este took on a completely different vibe than previous parties. The police blocked off a section of the street parallel to the beach in front of the nightclub to accommodate the overflow of guests. Curious pedestrians stopped in their tracks to marvel at the luxurious set up that included an outdoor lounge illuminated by the red glow of lights. The pulsating sounds of “Funky Town” on the DJ’s sound system from inside the club trickled outside. The welcome party could be heard from several blocks away.

Online qualifiers from all over the world mingled with Team PokerStars Pros such as Humberto Brenes, Leo Fernandez, Angel Guillen, Christian de Leon, Veronica Dabul, Andre Akkari, Alex Gomes, and Nacho Barbero. As per usual, Humberto Brenes happily posed for photographs with his legion of admirers.

The annual arrival of the PokerStars crew has become a colossal deal, so much so, that the Uruguayan Ministry of Tourism declared the LAPT Punta del Este an “event of national interest.”

Ah, that perfectly explained the raging street party.
