There’s a woman who serves me tea every morning at my hotel’s breakfast buffet. She’s a little short, a little stout, and perfectly friendly. I’ve also learned that after she brings me my initial cup of tea I’m not likely to ever see her smiling face again (I’ve since started ordering two at once). That’s the way service works in this part of the world. It’s delivered with a smile, but you’ll have an exceptionally long wait getting that smile to come back after it’s departed your table.

The 247 players that will return for Day 2 of the 2013 PokerStars.net Latin American Poker Tour Chile National Poker Championship, the wait today will be both long and short. The short part of the wait will be the race to the money bubble. When all of the re-entries were finally tallied last night, the total prize stood at $993,280 on the strength of 1,024 entries. The mathemagicians on the LAPT staff thus determined that 160 players will make the money today, with the payouts starting at $1,540 and increasing all the way to $184,220 for Sunday’s winner. Given the number of short stacks we saw in the field last night, the money bubble will probably pop in the third level of the day.

It would be a shock if our Day 1a and Day 1b chip leaders, Rodrigo Quezada (226,100) and Norson Saho (211,200) weren’t still in the field. They’re both aiming to be part of the much-longer wait – the slog down the poker road to the end of Day 2. Our schedule today calls for stopping play once 24 players remain.

That seems like a tall task, but Tournament Director Mike Ward’s been down this road once or twice before. He believes that the field will be quite close to 24 players (if not already there) by the end of 10 full levels of play today – the 10 levels of play called for by the schedule. I’m lucky enough to have won a bet or two against tournament directors in my time, but it’s always a dicey proposition to tangle with them. Guys like Mike have been running tournaments for a long, long time.

I do know that it will be four more cups of tea – two tomorrow and two on Sunday – before a winner is determined Sunday night. That’s the end point on this journey down poker road. Who knows what we’ll find in between here and there.
