Earlier tonight we were remembering LAPT3 Peru and a humorous story involving Leandro Csome. Things didn’t go too well for Csome following the most recent break, and during Level 19 he was knocked out in 57th.
Another player here today for whom LAPT3 Peru was especially memorable is of course Nacho Barbero, as that was the occasion of his then record-establishing second LAPT Main Event victory — a second in a row, in fact, after he’d won LAPT3 Uruguay.
Once the bubble arrived today, Barbero came precariously close to hitting the rail one spot shy of the money. But he survived that scare, and ever since it’s been a reprise of 2010 for the Argentinian as his stack has continued to grow unabated.
We noted a short while ago Barbero’s ouster of Joaquin Ruiz. It wasn’t long after that hand that Barbero’s Kâ™ K♦ bested Cesar Lazo’s Qâ™ Q♥ , enabling Barbero to double up to around 600,000.
From there chips continued to funnel toward Barbero, and as Level 19 concludes he’s distanced himself somewhat from the chase pack, pushing up over 900,000 and threatening double the stacks of his nearest foes.
That group contains the likes of Carlos Henrique da Rocha, now sitting with about 520,000, and Thiago Nishijima who has a little under half a million.
Ari Engel was in that neighborhood as well until recently when he called an all-in from Jerson Backmann following a 4♣ 4♠8♣ flop holding A♣ 7♣ (a flush draw) while Backmann had 7♠7♥ . Neither the J♦ turn or 7♦ river helped Engel, knocking him back to around 290,000.
As Level 20 begins — likely the last level of the night — there are 51 players remaining.
Fabian Ortiz (eliminated earlier in 63rd) has since tied Barbero’s record with his second LAPT title in Panama this past summer. If Barbero is indeed setting his sights higher, Lima is probably as good a place as any for him to make history again.
