Home / Uncategorized / Malle1000 tops two former champs in 3/25/14 Super Tuesday for $117K

It’s officially boom time for the Super Tuesday. For the eighth straight week the weekly $1,050 no-limit hold’em more than doubled the $300,000 guaranteed prize pool, attracting a high-quality field of more than 600 players. At 623, the numbers were down a touch from last week’s 644, but a six-figure score was still set for the eventual winner to keep the Super Tuesday’s streak of recent success alive.

The candidates for that top prize included several players with experience going deep in this tournament, accounting for three past victories between them. But before they could get there, nearly 12 hours of play would be required.

From 623 to 9

After about five hours and 45 minutes the field had narrowed to the final 73 players, giving everyone but the next player to bust a Super Tuesday payday. Five players were holding 10 big blinds or less, with Greece’s prsalute, Poland’s Sphinx87, and the Czech Republic’s gomir the closest to elimination with less than four big blinds apiece. But they were all able to sneak past the post after past Sunday Second Chance champ and Sunday Warm-Up final tablist Rafael “LiroLa” Monteiro went out on the bubble. Monteiro three-bet all-in for 22,619 with A♥ Qâ™  over the top of a raise to 7,296 by past WCOOP bracelet Vinkyy, who called with Kâ™  K♥ to over the vault doors for the last 72 players.

Max Lykov made it to 35th place in the Super Tuesday

PokerStars Team Pro’s Maxim Lykov represented the red spade brigade alone with a 35th-place finish for $3,115, the same payout earned by Ashley “DYBYDX” Mason in 32nd place and one payout jump behind Vinkyy’s $3,738 in 23rd place. When the field had been reduced to the final two tables the chip lead belonged to Alea1actaest from Malta with 368,059 chips, trailed by NateSD222 with 307,743 and khanrava with 281,264, both playing from Mexico.

An hour later the tables had turned. balrogpower (18th place), tkcasino007 (17th), and WatchOutFish (16th) cashed for $4,984 each, while PokerMendi (15th), Joao “joaoMathias” Baumgarten (14th), and danger0us (13th) had each earned $6,230. The three players who had occupied the top spots just an hour before were at the bottom with just 10 players remaining. NateSD222 was near the back of the pack and khanrava, a former TCOOP champion, had bowed out in 12th place. The former chip leader Alea1actaest faced elimination after catching two pair with Aâ™  9♦ on the 4â™  9♣ [94c] flop and calling all-in on the 6â™  turn, only to run into Malle1000’s K♥ J♦ . Five outs were no good once the river came K♣ , popping the bubble and bringing on the finale.

Final table time

With the blinds and antes at 3,200/6,400/800, the last remaining players sat down to fight over the six-figure top prize:

Seat 1: BWFCLEE (231,284 in chips)
Seat 2: Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell (484,090 in chips)
Seat 3: NateSD222 (243,876 in chips)
Seat 4: Rinat44 (141,032 in chips)
Seat 5: WICKED617 (287,985 in chips)
Seat 6: Le Pedra (212,676 in chips)
Seat 7: Marty “TheLipoFund” Mathis (292,942 in chips)
Seat 8: Malle1000 (645,575 in chips)
Seat 9: ramminn (575,540 in chips)

Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell was looking for a third career Super Tuesday title after wins in 2011 and 2012. So was Marty “TheLipoFund” Mathis, an EPT regular grinding tourneys from his hotel room in Vienna who registered a win back in December 2013. WICKED617 was returning to the final table just three weeks after finishing in 5th place in the largest Super Tuesday ever held, while BWFCLEE was just two weeks removed from bubbling the final table.

It took eight hands to see the first flop and 15 to see the first showdown. The latter was won by NateSD222 after raising before the flop with A♠ K♥ and getting action from BWFCLEE. NateSD222 bet the flop, checked the turn, then bet the river after hitting a full house with the complete board reading 6♥ 10♥ A♦ 10♣ A♣ . BWFCLEE called 77,475 on the river but mucked, giving the 225,000-chip pot to NateSD222.

Russia’s Rinat44, who had come in with the shortest stack and played tight poker ever since, opened the next hand with an all-in bet from early position to take down the 3,600/7,200/900 blinds and antes. Then Rinat44 did it again on the next hand, Hand #17, with an all-in raise to 125,732 under the gun. NateSD222 called with A♦ K♦ and was able to win the race against Rinat44’s 10â™  10♥ after the board came J♥ Aâ™  2♦ 4â™  9♥ . With that the Russian player became the first player to cash out of the final table, earning $9,531.90 for 9th place.

On the strength of that pot NateSD222 ramped up the aggression and began to move up the leaderboard, settling into third place with around 530,658 chips behind Malle1000 (667,775) and ramminn (550,640). Hand #28 saw Marty Mathis slot in right behind those three players at WICKED617’s expense:

WICKED617’s cracked aces dropped the Dutch player’s stack to 110,543, a little under 14 big blinds with blinds and antes at 4,000/8,000/1,000. Four hands later, with another pocket pair in the hole, WICKED617 took a stab at doubling up, opening all-in from early position with J♥ J♦ . But once again the deck had other ideas, dealing Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell K♥ K♦ in the big blind. One 8â™  3â™  K♣ 10♥ 2♥ board later and WICKED617’s Super Tuesday had ended with a $14,017.50 cash in 8th place.

BWFCLEE now held the mantle of short stack with 165,134 chips, just a touch over 20 big blinds. A couple of blind steals and a pot won against Le Pedra after flopping top pair with A♥ J♥ had BWFCLEE up to 190,384 by Hand #60, though those chips were worth slightly less on the 5,000/10,000/1,250 blind level. They all went in the middle from the small blind, the third bet before the flop after Malle1000 had opened in the cutoff for 20K. Malle1000 made the call with K♣ K♥ and BWFCLEE showed A♣ 10♦ , which spelled the end after the board came 6♦ Q♣ 2♦ 7♠ 8♥ . Finishing in 7th place was worth $20,247.50 for BWFCLEE, an improvement on that 10th-place finish in this tourney two weeks back.

The lone remaining short stack now was Le Pedra with 208,426 chips. That sum had dipped only slightly to 202,526 after the next two orbits when the Brazilian player opened Hand #76 in the cutoff, raising the minimum to 24,000. ramminn called from the big blind to take a J♦ J♣ 5♥ flop, after which the player from Iceland got in an all-in check-raise following Le Pedra’s 90,000-chip continuation bet. Le Pedra called with A♥ 7â™  , which needed running aces or sevens to crack ramminn’s trip jacks with Jâ™  10♥ . Le Pedra got the 7♥ on the turn, but the river was the most unhelpful 6♣ and the Brazilian player walked in 6th place for $26,477.50.

From five to heads-up

An hour and a half had passed since the start of the final table. In that time the blinds and antes had reached 6,000/12,000/1,500 and the chips had accumulated in front of the remaining five players in these volumes:

Seat 2: Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell (239,606 in chips)
Seat 3: NateSD222 (960,540 in chips)
Seat 7: Marty “TheLipoFund” Mathis (402,311 in chips)
Seat 8: Malle1000 (940,527 in chips)
Seat 9: ramminn (572,016 in chips)

Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell had come into this final table with designs on a third career Super Tuesday title, but only a few hands before Le Pedra’s elimination he dropped nearly half his stack in one hand against NateSD222:

Serradell had dropped another 60,000 chips or so before opening the action on Hand #96 with an all-in raise to 243,606 from the button, holding K♥ 9♣ . Marty Mathis was in the big blind with 6♣ 6â™  and called for 229,606 more, leaving just over 213,000 behind in case of a loss. The flop came mostly high at 10â™  A♥ 2â™  , leaving room for MendaLerenda to pick up a straight draw with the J♣ on the turn, but the J♥ on the river meant the sixes held up. With that Serradell’s run at a third title ended with a $33,642 payday in 5th place.

Malle1000 was firmly in the lead now with more than NateSD222 and ramminn were in a virtual tie for second place, both over 740,000 chips and separated by no more than just a few big blinds. Then Hand #105 rolled around and ramminn met NateSD222 in the blinds. The Icelandic player opened for 40,000 in the small blind and NateSd222 called to take a 10♦ K♥ 10♣ flop. Every street of the hand saw ramminn open out of position – for 31,680, 56,000, and 128,000 on the flop, turn, and river – and NateSD222 make the call. By the end the board read 10♦ K♥ 10♣ Q♦ 4â™  and Malle1000 showed J♦ 9â™  for the turned king-high straight, good for a 519,360-chip pot.

Now Malle1000 and ramminn were in a virtual tie for the lead with just over 1,000,000 chips each, while NateSD222 and Marty Mathis both overed a few big blinds over 500,000 chips each. By Hand #175 the blinds and antes were up to 12,500/25,000/3,125 and NateSD222 had dropped back to 282,580, worth just over 11 big blinds. Those chips all went in from the cutoff as the third bet before the flop after ramminn opened the betting for 50,000 under the gun. Then Malle1000 raised to isolate with Aâ™  Kâ™  and got heads-up against NateSD222’s A♥ J♦ . The Jâ™  5â™  7♥ was a hit for both players, though NateSD222 was on the draw. The Q♥ turn gave Malle1000 more outs heading to the river, and the 10♦ was one of them. The Broadway straight was good to give Malle1000 the 633,910 chips in the middle, beating NateSD222’s pair of jacks. With that NateSD222 went to the rail with $47,971 for 4th place.

With 12,500/25,000/3,125 blinds and antes, Malle1000’s lead over the other two players was worth more than 30 big blinds. Malle1000 held 1,594,737 chips, slightly more than Marty “TheLipoFund” Mathis (715,732) and ramminn (804,531) put together, but was unable to hold that position and slid back over the next 40 hands or so. Mathis was able to climb to 893,991, but ramminn got as high as 1,064,531.

That was less than one small blind behind Malle1000 on the 15,000/30,000/3,750 level when Hand #218 rolled around and the two of them got involved in a raising war before the flop. Malle1000 opened the betting in the small blind with 10â™  10♣ and moved all-in after ramminn three-bet to 180,000. ramminn made the call for 91,947 less with A♦ Qâ™  but couldn’t win the coin flip as the board came 3♣ 7â™  2♦ 4♥ 8â™  . The end of the line for ramminn came with the soothing sum of $63,546 in 3rd place.

Mathis looks for a repeat victory

With yet another six-figure Super Tuesday prize on the line, the final two players squared off:

Seat 7: Marty “TheLipoFund” Mathis (890,241 in chips)
Seat 8: Malle1000 (2,224,759 in chips)

This marked the second time in three months that Marty Mathis had made it to heads-up play in the Super Tuesday. The first time came with a chip lead that never disappeared en route to locking up the win. This time Mathis faced a deficit against Malle1000, though by no means an insurmountable one with nearly 30 big blinds to start the match. Mathis made up ground in the early stages of the battle, starting with the very first hand:

By staying aggressive, Mathis was able to maintain striking distance from a double-up into the chip lead. But Hand #235 of the final table proved to be the turning point away from that trend after Mathis called in the big blind to take a 3♠ K♥ A♥ flop. Both player checked to bring the 5♥ on the turn, and Mathis led for 79,999. Malle1000 made the call and the 9♣ came on the river. Mathis led again, this time for 189,990, but Malle1000 broke with the previous pattern and came in for a raise to 455,000. Mathis thought it over but eventually mucked, shipping the 688,728-chip pot to Malle1000 and re-opening a 1.3 million-chip gap between the two players.

Malle1000 hit the gas from there and 11 hands later had reduced Mathis’ stack to 411,364 chips. The latter limped on the button on Hand #246 before moving all-in over the top of Malle1000’s raise to 210,000. Malle1000 made the call with A♣ K♥ , which had Mathis’ Aâ™  7♥ dominated. The board came down 5♣ A♥ 4â™  9â™  A♦ , giving both players trips aces, and Malle1000’s king kicker was good for both the pot and the tournament.

The second time at the Super Tuesday final table might not have been the charm for Mathis, but the $86,285.50 runner-up prize in this tournament was worth nearly $38K more than that win back in December. Not bad for grinding a tournament from your hotel room in Vienna, eh Marty? As he tweeted after the end of heads-up play, that’s the single largest cash of his six-year career – a high point that came on no sleep, to boot.

Meanwhile Malle1000 walked with the $117,747 top prize, the first time the German player has ever cashed for six figures in a PokerStars tournament. To do so against top competition in the Super Tuesday is quite the accomplishment, so congratulations to Malle1000 for pulling it off.
