It all looked like it would be over too soon for Team PokerStars Pro Joe Cada when he arrived at the tournament room this afternoon.

Frustrated with a stack of just 34,000 coming into the day, the former WSOP Main Event winner lost a third of it on the second hand of the day, turning the nuts before the river gave his opponent a full house. But while some might have seen that as cause to pack the bags, Cada was able to turn things around.

“It’s been a great day,” explained Cada at the break. The reason being a change of fortune which started shortly after his stack was reduced to 20,000.

“I went on a huge heater,” he said. “I doubled up jacks versus twos to get up to 40-some. I won like a decent chunk to get up to 70,000. When I had 70k I doubled up – I got middle set versus flush draw to get up to 140,000. It’s been going well.

At moments like this it’s nice to think that there is some specific skill, known only to the very best players, that enables them to dig their way out of a hole. But for Cada it was much more simple than that.

“I keep making hands,” he said. “It’s an easy game when you make hands.”

Fair enough. Still, the players at his table might wish he’d stop raising hands at every opportunity.
