We’re down to just 13 players in the PokerStars Festival Hamburg €2,200 High Roller, and that means they’re all in the money.
The unfortunate soul who left the Casino Schenefeld with nothing turned out to be one of the three former EPT winners we told you about earlier on. But before we tell you which one it was, let’s have a recap of play so far. I don’t want to jinx it, but things seem to be moving at a good pace.
Rewinding a bit, we lost ten players during the first three levels of Day 2, meaning only 18 returned from the dinner break. Jonas Wohlgemuth, Sven Leu, Fredrik Andersson, Roberto Manfredi, Erkan Sonmez, Christian Freimuller, Rishi Bhasin, Said Hossein Madani, Oleg Volosin, and Negjdet Avdylaj all fell early on.
With stomachs full, the final 18 returned and we swiftly lost a further lost four players, including one former EPT winner busting another. EPT8 Madrid champ Frederik Jensen shoved for 65,000 only for EPT3 Baden winner Thang Duc Nguyen to call in for 45,000. Jensen had Nguyen’s 6♦ 6♣ crushed with his 9♦ 9♠ , which held up after the runout.
From the start of play right up to the bubble, start-of-day chip leader Toni Vardjavand had continued his dominance. He actually came back from the dinner break with a stack twice as large as his nearest competitor, but has since dipped a little despite still holding the second largest stack at the time of writing.
With 14 remaining and on the stone bubble, it was time for Michael Schulze – the EPT8 Warsaw victor – to make his exit just shy of the cash. Vitaly Karayvan had min-opened to 12,000 from the cutoff (with blinds at 3,000/6,000) and Schulze called from the small blind. Kim De Han completed from the big blind and it went three-ways to the flop.
The dealer laid the 9♥ 7♥ 2♦ on which Schulze led out for 16,000. Karayvan let it go, but De Han called to see the 8♣ turn. Schulze didn’t slow down, leading again for 22,000. Now De Han raised it up to 45,000, which Schulze called. The river came the 4♠ and after a minute or so in the tank Schulze shoved for around 60,000. De Han snap-called, and there’d be no hand-for-hand pause as the other table was already finished with their action.
Schulze flashed the Q♠ 9♠ for top pair, but that was no good compared to De Han’s J♣ 10♥ for the nut straight. After that, everyone was guaranteed a payday.
Here’s a reminder of what they’re playing for:
