Home / Uncategorized / PokerStars Festival Manila: Indian contingent out in force

One of the best things about the international poker circuit is seeing cultures collide when players from all around the world get together and battle it out on the felt. We may be here in Manila while India is around 5,000 kilometres away (that’s 3,100 miles for those of you averse to the metric system) but that hasn’t stopped a strong Indian contingent from making the trip across.

Indian players have already claimed six titles at this PokerStars Festival, with Dhanesh Chainani clinching two for himself. Chainani’s impressive run this week has seen him conquer the PHP11,000 Knockout event for PHP169,400 before following that up with a victory in the PHP16,500 Six handed event for PHP198,000.

Fellow podium topper Viren Kapur bested a field of 451 entries to take out the PHP16,500 PokerStars Open and pocket PHP1,234,000.

Also crowned champions this week were Sam Polishetty who won the PHP5,600 Limit Hold’em Knockout event for PHP92,100, and Siddarth Singhvi who shipped the PHP16,500 Bubble Rush for PHP280,000.

And finally the most notable Indian champion here in Manila was Aditya Sushant who binked the PHP22,000 Open Face Chinese Pineapple event to earn himself PHP227,200. Sushant now has a Spadie to go with his recently acquired World Series of Poker bracelet. Back in June, Sushant along with teammate Nipun Java became the first-ever Indian born bracelet winners when they took down the $1,000 No Limit Hold’em Tag Team event for a combined $150,637.

That brings us to tonight where the Indian players are making their presence felt on Day 1B of the Main Event. Pranay Vijay Kapoor, Kunal Patni, Shravan Chhabria, Uday Bansal, Vikram Palanisamy, Akash Chandrashekhar, Romit Advani, Abhinav Iyer, Keshav Chadha are all in the mix, as well as the aforementioned champions Chainani, Singhvi, Polishetty and Sushant. Dhaval Mudgal is in town too and he begged us to mention that he won the satellite for the upcoming Super Stack event, but opted to take the cash instead and jump into the Main Event. Good work buddy!

Of these bunch it appears that Bansal is currently leading the team with 161,000 in chips and just a couple of levels to go before play concludes. Let’s see who will be on top of the counts for the Indian contingent then and whether they can emerge as the overall end-of-day chip leader here in the Main Event.
