Huge amounts of money are won and lost every day in poker tournaments all around the world. Players are pitted against each other in a battle of wits and all have the same objection – to win. That’s the nature of the game that we all love and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Unfortunately because of this though it’s easy to forget that there are causes out there which deserve our attention, our help and our charity.

That’s where PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams comes in.

Just a few hours before play on Day 1b of the MPC20 Red Dragon Main Event, PokerStars LIVE Macau at the City of Dreams donated HK$400,000 to two very worthy charities – the Anima Society and the Artistry of Wind Box Community Development (AWBCD).

When APPT President Danny McDonagh first spoke to the PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams poker room this afternoon, he poignantly addressed how important it is to support charitable organisations such as Anima and AWBCD.

“What players may not realise,” McDonagh announced. “Is that a portion of all tournament fees here at PokerStars LIVE Macau are donated to charity. So therefore poker players are actually also helping these charitable organisations.”

The first novelty-sized HK$400,000 cheque was given to Anima Vice President Sousa Pais. Anima is a Society for the Protection of Animals in Macau and was established on December 11th, 2003. Anima is a non-profit association with the highest status in Macau conferred by the Macau Government on November 25th, 2009.

Pais spoke about how Anima works to protect and save hundreds of dogs, cats and other animals every year. Pais also mentioned how grateful he was for the donation from PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams and that Anima’s continued perseverance in protecting animals in Macau would not be possible without charity such as this.

Next to receive a very generous HK$400,000 cheque was ACBWD President Arvin Cheng. ACBWD is a non-profit organisation which was founded in 2013 by a group of artists who encountered youngsters who were recovering in the Desafi Jovem Teen Challenge Rehab Centre and realised that there was a lack of inclusive arts culture for this marginalised portion of society. ACBWD’s mission is to enable troubled individuals a chance to contribute to society through art and help in rebuilding a healthy life through spiritual self-improvement and altruism.

When Cheng received the cheque on behalf of ACBWD he first thanks PokerStars LIVE at the City of Dreams in English and then told a story in Cantonese. While we didn’t fully understand what Cheng was saying, his passion was very clear and it’s a passion that clearly extends to the mission of ACBWD.
