PokerStars announced this afternoon that PokerStars.eu has gone live for all of its players in Sweden and Finland. Combined with the recent announcement of PokerStars’ new license in Malta, it’s an important step in improving the player experience and benefits in those countries and across Europe.

Today’s announcement means Swedish and Finnish players will continue to play against the worldwide PokerStars player base, but now can begin to recognize the benefits of PokerStars’ new Maltese license.

As Eric Hollreiser wrote in last week’s Corporate Blog, the new license and .eu site allow for clarity in taxation of poker winnings. Now, Swedish and Finnish players will be contracting directly with a company officially based and licensed in a European Union member state. What’s more, PokerStars has an office in Malta directly responsible for handling the company’s business operations in Sweden and Finland. Online poker winnings in Sweden and Finland are tax-free when won in the European Union under a license issued by a member state.

Swedish and Finish players should expect a PokerStars system update when they next open the game software. That update will begin the process of transferring their accounts, cash balances, and FPPs to the PokerStars.eu system.

In addition to the license in Malta, PokerStars was recently given a license in Denmark. It also has licenses in PokerStars France, Italy, Belgium, Estonia, and the Isle of Man.

PokerStars.eu will be available in certain other European markets in the near future.
