Many believe 8-Game Mix tournaments are one of the best ways to judge a player’s overall poker prowess. Participants need to show well-rounded poker abilities to win this type of event and flaws glow brightly. Whether this is true or not, there is a reason the WSOP runs its Poker Players Championship with an 8-Game format.

Event #34 of the 2014 Spring Championship of Online Poker featured the only 8-Game tournaments on the schedule and the high version brought out some of the best players in the world. There were few soft spots among the 131 entrants but only 18 players made it into the money with the top spot set to earn $68,120.

The games rotated through a lineup of Deuce-to-Seven Triple Draw, Limit Hold’em, Limit Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, Stud, Stud Hi/Lo, No Limit Hold’em, and Pot Limit Omaha with a switch up every 15 minutes. That meant two hours of play before a favorite game rolled back around and the NLH/PLO wizards had to mix it up the rest of the time.

While it was technically possible to go bust before getting through the limit game, it was unlikely thanks to the structure, quality of play, and money at stake. Several players were teasing a zero count early including SCOOP 18-H champion Niki “RealAndyBeal” Jedlicka, PokerStars’ own Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, and Naoya “nkeyno” Kihara but it was the mysterious WCOOP champ nilsef who was the first gone. He battled his short stack through the limit games but was all-in shortly after the first NLH rotation. The others listed were gone shortly afterwards.

As one would expect with a quality field, it was a battle to get any advantage and they went at it for 8.5 hours just to hit the money bubble. The limit games again weren’t getting the job done and the dam finally broke once NLH came around. German pro blony_tair was that guy who spent all that time to finish just short of the money at the hands of Colisea.

The tournament was a lock for a nicely stacked final table but a few big names dropped just short including 2010 WCOOP Event #7 winner Ig123456789 and Team PokerStars’ Jason Mercier who stone bubbled it in 7th place. (In Mercier’s “defense”, he was busy winning Event #34-M) It took nearly 45 minutes of hand-for-hand action but Mercier’s knockout settled things, he survived during the NLH and PLO action with a short stack but lost it in a big Deuce-to-Seven hand.

The final six players featured Mayu “marroca5” Roca at his fourth 2014 SCOOP final table (to go along with his previous SCOOP and WCOOP titles), alex987 also making his fourth final table this series, Colisea making his third, 2014 SCOOP Event #03-H champion GeoManousos, and 2012 WCOOP Event #7 winner Falco234. Plenty of past success at this tough table.

Final Table chip counts:

Seat 1: alex987 (133,827 in chips)
Seat 2: Falco234 (53,184 in chips)
Seat 3: GeoManousos (203,053 in chips)
Seat 4: Ce$ar$pa (54,637 in chips)
Seat 5: marroca5 (153,481 in chips)
Seat 6: Colisea (56,818 in chips)

Falco234 flies the COOP, eliminated in 6th

2-7 Triple Draw Limits: 5,000/10,000

The final table was split into two groups, three with shorter stacks and three who were comfortable. Falco234 was the shortest of the short and wasted no time trying to get back in the game. He began with a raise from the button in 2-7 Triple Draw then called a raise from GeoManousos in the small blind.

GeoManousos drew one card while Falco234 drew three before raising all-in following a bet from GeoManousos. It was an small call and GeoManousos once again discarded one with Falco234 taking just two on the second draw. That draw did well enough for GeoManousos to stand pat on the third draw and Falco234 drew just one more.

GeoManousos had a good starting hand and drew well for 8♦ 6â™  5â™  4â™  2♦ to easily defeat Falco234’s J♦ 8â™  7♥ 6♣ 2♣ to send the former WCOOP winner out in 6th place for $11,790.

Ce$ar$pa takes a shower, eliminated in 5th

Limit Hold’em Limits: 5,000/10,000

Ce$ar$pa was next to take a spot at the bottom of the leaderboard and lost most of those chips before Limit Hold’em kicked off. He wasn’t holding much when he got into a preflop raising war that lead to his demise. Ce$ar$pa raised from the small blind after action folded to him and marroca5 responded with a raise of his own.

The two capped the betting before the flop came A♥ J♣ 3♠ and both players checked. That move must have put confidence in Ce$ar$pa because he pushed all-in after the 5♣ turn, less than one big bet, and marroca5 easily called. Ce$ar$pa was perhaps further behind than he expected when he showed 7♣ 7♦ against the flopped top pair A♣ 10♦ of marroca5.

A miracle didn’t show on the K♦ river to give the pot to marroca5 and send Ce$ar$pa out of the tournament in 5th place for $17,030.

alex987 ignores advice, eliminated in 4th

Stud Limits: 8,000/16,000 with 1,600 ante and 2,400 bring in

The last four players finally settled into a nice pace as Colisea, the final small stack, found a series of hands to get back in the game including a 141,000 pot against GeoManousos in Limit Omaha Hi/Lo. With everyone holding healthy amounts, those four players were grinding and shuffling chips around the table and playing small ball.

It took them an hour of four-handed play before someone was at risk and it was Colisea once again. He found another double, this time at the expense of alex987, and it was down to three just a few hands later. Colisea was the bring in with (X-X)6♦ then called the complete of alex987 with (X-X)K♠ .

alex987 bet out with (X-X)K♠ 7♥ , Colisea called with (X-X)6♦ 4♣ and alex987 bet again on 5th street with (X-X)K♠ 7♥ 7♠ . Colisea called the bet with (X-X)6♦ 4♣ 3♣ and offered a little advice.

Colisea said, “i advise u save 5k and check check”

alex987 paid no heed and put out his last 5,509 with (X-X)Kâ™  7♥ 7â™  8♥ before Colisea called with (X-X)6♦ 4♣ 3♣ Q♣ . alex987 was indeed behind in the hand when he showed two pair of Eights and Sevens against Colisea’s trip Fours. alex987 had outs but pulled a useless better two pair K♦ on 7th to be the next gone, exiting in 4th place for $22,270.

Colisea: (4♠ 4♦ )6♦ 4♣ 3♣ Q♣ J♦
alex987: (8♠ A♣ )K♠ 7♥ 7♠ 8♥ K♦

marroca5 shoves his way out the door, eliminated in 3rd

No Limit Hold’em Blinds: 2,500/5,000 with 625 ante

Mayu “marroca5” Roca is having a great run during 2014 SCOOP, making his fourth final table of the series and in the top five for Player of the Series. He has yet to add another victory to his previous SCOOP title and missed out once again. The Colombian was second in chips to start the final table but ran into a little bad luck.

Roca lost most of his stack when Colisea scooped a 164,000 pot with a full house in Stud Hi/Lo and was left with just 36,000 coming into the NLH portion of the game. He wasted no time and put them in the middle on the first hand and was called by Colisea in the big blind.

Roca: 10♠ 9♥
Colisea: A♠ 5♣

Roca was holding two live cards, missed the Qâ™  Jâ™  5♦ flop, but picked up an open ender while Colisea made his baby pair. The 2♣ turn was useless to both players and Roca’s comeback came up just short thanks to the blank 4♣ river. Roca once again showed talent across multiple games but was unable to finish the deal, going out in 3rd place for $34,060.

Colisea climbs back to win Event #34-H

Seat 3: GeoManousos (316,092 in chips)
Seat 6: Colisea (338,908 in chips)

Colisea played a patient game, hit in spots when he needed, and stuck around long enough to find a nice run of cards. With the extended amount of play at the final table, these two players had the chips to sit back and grind it out. Instead they never made it out of the NLH rotation which sent went out.

It took just 17 hands, with only two six-digit pots, and GeoManousos was all-in with a chance to even up the match back. Colisea opened the final hand action with a min-raise from the button and GeoManousos three-bet to 26,275. Colisea put in a fourth bet before GeoManousos five-bet shoved for 188,192 total.

Colisea was dominating for the win with A♣ Q♣ against J♣ 10♣ and grabbed a stranglehold on the hand when he hit the A♦ 4♦ 3♠ flop. GeoManousos needed running miracle cards to stay alive but it was impossible when the A♥ turn had him drawing dead to the runner up finish for $45,850.

Colisea made waves earlier in the series by making the final table of the Medium and High version of the Badugi event, now he has SCOOP championship to go along with them. He grabs the kudos along with $68,120 for the win.
