Home / Uncategorized / SCOOP 2014: kuhns89 topples Nacho Barbero to win his second SCOOP in Event #5-M ($215 FL Badugi)

Tonight was David’s night to have a go at Goliath. In two different SCOOP events with vastly different buy-ins, well-known champions fell to upstarts in their heads-up battles. Over in Event #2-H ($2,100 NLHE), Sorel “zangbezan24” Mizzi lost out on a title to Thailand’s bigdog6391. And in the 2014 SCOOP’s lone Badugi event, Germany’s kuhns89, a 2013 champ in Event #26-L ($11 PL Courchevel Hi/Lo), won his second watch in the medium buy-in edition, defeating Team PokerStars Pro Nacho Barbero in an hourlong heads-up battle.

Event #5-M, a $215 fixed-limit Badugi freezeout, drew 311 players and the $62,200.00 prize pool more than doubled the $25k guarantee. 40 places were paid with $12,129.00 up top. Red Spades Victor Ramdin, Marcin Horecki, ElkY and George Danzer were eliminated out of the money, but Team Pro Nacho Barbero and Team Online’s Matthias “Mati312” Brandner both made deep runs, finishing in the top 15.

Team PokerStars Pro Nacho Barbero

With 70 players remaining, Brandner held the chip lead, closely pursued by Barbero. However, as the money bubble approached Barbero remained with the front of the pack while Brandner fell back to an average stack. As the field fell to 41, FONBET_RULIT was in dire shape, holding only 1,916 in chips with the limits up to 2,000/4,000. All-in from the big blind vs. three opponents, FONBET_RULIT’s three-card 9-3-A didn’t hold a candle to Tollwuttroll’s 8-3-2-A Badugi and the Russian went out just short of the money.

Down to three tables, Barbero moved up to third in chips behind Icallyou333 and Christer “lennart” Johansson. However, Matthias Brandner was down to only half the average stack and slipped to only 8,000 when he couldn’t beat Colisea’s king Badugi. A few hands later, Brandner called all-in before the first draw, but neither he nor hummylun could top plattsburgh’s K-7-6-2 Badugi. Brandner was eliminated in 15th place and hummylum left with only 2,269 in chips.

Hummylun was a strong favorite to follow Brandner to the rail, but he tripled on the next deal and doubled on the following hand. By the third, he was up to 25,600 and two orbits later he doubled again to 56,000. Hummylun hung on until the final table bubble, but plattsburgh claimed the last of his chips when he made a jack Badugi, sending us to the final table.

Final table chip counts

Seat 1: lennart (118,428 in chips)
Seat 2: Icallyou333 (102,456 in chips)
Seat 3: MUSTAFABET (54,645 in chips)
Seat 4: plattsburgh (294,529 in chips)
Seat 5: kuhns89 (263,471 in chips)
Seat 6: Jackal69 (172,587 in chips)
Seat 7: nachobarbero (339,976 in chips)
Seat 8: Colisea (208,908 in chips)

MUSTAFABET eliminated in eighth, Jackal69 chased out in seventh

In a pot capped before the first draw, MUSTAFABET discarded one card on the first and second draw and called Icallyou333 down until he missed on the third draw. Icallyou333 led out and MUSTAFABET folded, electing to save his last 971 in chips. Two hands later, MUSTAFABET was all-in from the big blind and although he improved to a three-card 3-2-A, it wasn’t enough to get past Colisea’s pat king Badugi. For eighth place, MUSTAFABET took home $1,555.00.

Two hands later, Jackal69 three-bet to 30,000 pre-draw, leaving himself 53,000 behind. Initial raiser kuhns89 called and drew two while Jackal69 drew one. However, kuhns89 check-raised after the first draw and stood pat on the second. Jackal69 again drew one and called kuhns89’s 20,000 bet. Both players were pat on the third draw and kuhns89 bet 20,000. Jackal69 called all-in for less and turned over a Q-8-6-3 Badugi only to be shown the wheel (4-3-2-A). Jackal69 departed in seventh place, earning $1,866.00 for his run.

lennart succumbs in sixth

One hand after Jackal69’s elimination, lennart”s stack was reduced to little more than one big blind. Lennart capped the betting pre-draw and stood pat while Colisea drew one. Colisea turned around and led out, lennart raised to 20,000 and Colisea three-bet. Lennart let go of his hand and was left with only 23,400 in chips. Although lennart doubled to 51,000 a few hands later, he was eliminated soon thereafter in sixth place when his T-7-6-2 Badugi fell to kuhns89’s 9-5-4-3.

Indecent proposal

As play turned five-handed, Colisea tried to gauge interest in a deal. Everyone was at least willing to look at numbers and the action was paused with the following chip counts:

kuhns89 – 470,588
nachobarbero – 353,048
Icallyou333 – 328,956
Colisea – 242,379
plattsburgh – 160,029

Final table host Roy “GodlikeRoy” Bhasin presented the quintet with ICM numbers, the shares ranging from $5,793 to $8,322 with $500 left in play for the winner. When short stack plattsburgh gamely quipped he wouldn’t deal for less than $8k, everyone agreed to resume play. However, plattsburgh came in with a last-ditch offer.

plattsburgh: id like to amend the deal that first gets a date with Liv Boeree
plattsburgh: all in favor?
nachobarbero: ahahaha
nachobarbero: i can ask her…how much u willing to give of your winnings?
plattsburgh: 7.8%
plattsburgh: LIV I LOVE YOU

The proposal not nearly rich enough for Liv or plattsburgh’s opponents, cards went back in the air.

Icallyou333 ousted in fifth

Five-handed play continued, Nacho Barbero moving into the chip lead on a hand where he threw away three cards on the first draw and two on the second. Colisea stood pat on the second draw and led out, but Barbero came in with a raise to 48,000. Colisea called and both players stood pat on the third draw. Barbero led out and Colisea called only to muck upon sight of Barbero’s 9-5-2-A Badugi. Barbero took the lead with 630,000 in chips while Colisea fell to 63,000.

Meanwhile, Icallyou333 had slipped to 44,000. With the limits up to 12,000/24,000, Icallyou333 four-bet all-in before the first draw and plattsburgh called. Icallyou333 drew two, two, and two while plattsburgh stood pat on the second draw. While plattsburgh made a Q-3-2-A Badugi, Icallyou333 didn’t improve beyond a two-card 5-A and hit the rail in fifth place ($3,421.00).

Barbero busts Colisea in fourth

Six hands later, the action folded around to Nacho Barbero in the small blind. He made an uncharacteristic move and limped in as a shocked Colisea checked his option in the big blind. Barbero drew two cards and Colisea drew three. Barbero led out for 12,000, Colisea called and on the second draw Barbero took one card while Colisea again went for two. Barbero bet 24,000, Colisea raised, and Barbero reraised to 72,000. Colisea raised all-in for 72,758 and Barbero called the small balance. Barbero stood pat on the third draw and Colisea drew one. Although Colisea made a Q-5-2-A Badugi, Barbero revealed a T-7-3-2 Badugi and Colisea departed in fourth place ($4,976.00).

plattsburgh iced in third

When three-handed play commenced, Nacho Barbero held the chip lead with 891,000, kuhns89 was second with 517,000 and plattsburgh was the short stack with 147,000.

Although he was by far the least-known among the final three, kuhns89 won a SCOOP watch last year and asked his opponents if they had done the same.

kuhns89: u have a watch already nacho?
kuhns89: or platt?
nachobarbero: ya i do
nachobarbero: u?
plattsburgh: not yet
kuhns89: ya
kuhns89: uno
kuhns89: but i have two arms
nachobarbero: same here
nachobarbero: 1
nachobarbero: lol
kuhns89: whcih tourney u took down?
nachobarbero: limit 2k turbo i think
nachobarbero: u?
kuhns89: 11$ plo chourvecal hi lo

Plattsburgh had one helluva roller-coaster ride three-handed, falling to 57,000 when he folded the third draw, doubling to 114,000 when his king Badugi trumped kuhns89’s 6-4-A, and reaching 267,000 in chips when his J-6-3-2 Badugi edged out Barbero’s J-7-5-A. Plattsburgh’s rush continued on the very next hand when he discarded two on the first draw and made Number Two- a 5-4-3-A Badugi. Plattsburgh reached a high-water mark of 375,000 before his fortunes turned and he lost most of his stack to kuhns89. Left with 21,000 in chips, 16,000 of them committed in the big blind, plattsburgh called all-in vs. Nacho Barbero. Nacho drew two, one, and one, while plattsburgh drew four, two, and two. Barbero’s three-card 7-6-3 topped plattsburgh’s 8-2-A and he hit the rail in third place, good for $6,842.00.

nachobarbero: gg
kuhns89: sick fight

Heads-up chip counts

Seat 5: kuhns89 (822,603 in chips)
Seat 7: nachobarbero (732,397 in chips)

Plattsburgh’s elimination ensured that we’d crown a two-time SCOOP champion in this event. Although kuhns89 started heads-up with a slight lead, Barbero reclaimed it on the first hand of their match when he made a ten Badugi vs. kuhns89’s queen Badugi. However, kuhns89 soon ground his stack back to even. The lead flopped back and forth every few hands until Barbero dropped four pots in a row, slipping to 426,000. Barbero’s stack dipped as low as 276,000 before he made an eight Badugi on the second draw to double up.

At the 45-minute mark of this match, Barbero evened the stacks again. With the limits up to 25,000/50,000, he raised his button pre-draw and discarded two while kuhn89 only drew one. Kuhns89 led out and Barbero called. On the second draw both players took one and kuhns89 checked over to Barbero, who checked behind. Both drew one again on the final draw and kuhns89 checked to Barbero, who bet 50,000. Kuhns89 called, but couldn’t beat Barbero’s J-8-5-2 Badugi.

This was the last time their stacks would be even. Kuhns89 went on a tear, winning the next 11 hands in a row. Barbero twice stood pat on the third draw and folded to a bet from kuhns89. Down to 203,000, Barbero three-bet to 75,000 pre-draw and drew one while kuhns89 took two cards. Barbero bet and kuhns89 called. Both drew one on the second draw and again, Barbero led out and kuhns89 called. The third draw saw both players each discard one and Barbero fired out again for 50,000. Kuhns89 raised to 100,000. Clearly beat and holding only 2,800 behind, Barbero vented into the chat box.

nachobarbero: ovb
nachobarbero: a32
nachobarbero: and u get there
nachobarbero: is so ****ed up
kuhns89: can fold the 6 draw
kuhns89: not
nachobarbero: how can i destroy u
nachobarbero: and lose
nachobarbero: is so riggef

Barbero folded, and although he doubled to 5,588 on the next deal, kuhns89 closed it out on the one after that.

Congratulations to kuhns89 on his second SCOOP title in as many years. He banked $12,129.00 for the win while runner-up Nacho Barbero picked up $9,019.00
