Event #21 took the standard Pot Limit Omaha tournament and tweaked it for a little more action. The tournament added a hole card, tossed in a single rebuy option, and put them at short-handed tables for fun and big money. The high version brought out a lot of talented players and when it was done, Kamchatka 1 denied Calvin “cal42688” Anderson’s attempt to extend his SCOOP title record.

The $700 buy-in tournament drew 142 of the top players in poker and 76 of them used their single rebuy with another 89 adding on chips when registration closed. They created a prize pool worth $204,769 to more than double the guarantee on the tournament. Everyone who made the last three tables earned a piece of the money with $53,000 up top for the next SCOOP champion.

The tournament paused after Level 20 with only seven players remaining. Team PokerStars members Jason Mercier and George Danzer were in contention late but neither made it through to the extra session. Anderson was in sixth place out of the seven and was trying to collect his record-breaking seventh SCOOP title. A win here would also haven broken the record he currently holds with Shaun Deeb, each own eight career COOP titles.

The other six players weren’t too shabby in their own right. DundermÃ¥sen’s biggest cash to date came in this format when he finished second in the 2014 WCOOP $320 Pot Limit 5-Card Omana 6-Max event. He had to win this tournament to top the amount he won in that game.

November Niner Joseph “subiime” Cheong was sitting comfortably in the middle of the pack and came close to getting a SCOOP title of his own in the 2014 NLH/PLO high buy-in event. danfiu also made a big final table when he finished fourth in the 2013 WCOOP PLO event.

They returned for Day 2 only one elimination from making the final table but it took a while for that to happen. After 46 minutes of play, they were down to six players when chip leader Kamchatka 1 knocked out former Sunday Warmup winner bar-bar9999 in seventh place.

Cheong flops two, eliminated in 6th

It took longer than expected to hit the final table and it was another long stretch of play once they reached it. Kamchatka 1 continued to extend his lead, danfiu picked up a few big pots, and our November Niner hit a (second best) flop.

Cheong was the shortest stacked player by far but still had plenty of chips to see some flops. He was in a three-way pot to the K♦ 7♦ 2♦ when he moved all-in for his last 35,312 with flopped top two A♣ K♠ 10♠ 7♣ 6♦ . Kamchatka 1 made the easy call with his flopped set 9♣ 7♠ 7♥ 5♥ 5♠ and nothing changed as the board completed Q♣ 3♥ to send Cheong out in 6th place.

Dundermåsen floated out on a boat, eliminated in 5th

Not all big pots are built by short stack shoves, some come from players smashing a flop. It took 90 minutes to find the next really big hand after Cheong was eliminated and it was a three-handed affair between Dundermåsen, Kamchatka 1, and Roywing to the Q♣ Q♠ 3♥ flop.

It was followed by the rarely seen double check/raise when Roywing and Dundermåsen did just that after Kamchatka 1 bet out 38,800. Roywing raised it up and Dundermåsen moved all-in to get the chip leader out of the pot.

Both players flopped trip queens but Roywing’s A♣ K♣ Q♥ J♥ 5♣ hand was superior to DundermÃ¥sen’s Q♦ J♦ 10♥ 9♣ 6â™  . DundermÃ¥sen needed to pair his ten, nine, or six but Roywing got there first when the turn came 5♦ . It didn’t change what DundermÃ¥sen was looking for and the 8♥ river blanked him out in 5th place.

Roywing coolered and bad beat, eliminated in 4th

Roywing found a unique hand, one that started as a cooler and turned into a suck/resuck problem. He put his chips in the middle, all 44K of them, and danfiu raised it up on the button to get heads-up.

No hand is completely dominant in five-card PLO but Roywing’s K♦ Kâ™  8♥ 7â™  5♣ needed a lot of help against Aâ™  A♥ Q♦ 4♦ 3♣ . He got just that on the K♣ 10♥ 5♦ flop to take a big lead with his set.

His chance at a double was short-lived as the board ran out diamonds 9♦ 7♦ to give danfiu the flush and the pot to send Roywing out in 4th place.

Anderson falls short of another SCOOP, eliminated in 3rd

Calvin “cal42688” Anderson

Calvin “cal42688” Anderson is the king of SCOOP (and co-COOP president with Shaun Deeb) but he couldn’t win his seventh SCOOP title in this tournament despite a nice run.

Anderson was looking up at both Kamchatka 1 and danfiu when he made a move to get back in contention on the next hand after Roywing’s elimination. He limped his small blind then called a big blind raise from danfiu to see the Qâ™  10♥ 9♥ flop. He check/raised with a pot-sized bet and danfiu raised enough to put the eight-time COOP champion all-in.

Anderson was behind with A♣ J♥ 6♦ 4♣ 3♥ flop and his flush draw was not up to par with danfiu’s A♥ K♥ 9â™  7♥ 3â™  . The board finished with the 8♦ turn and 2♦ river for danfiu’s pair of nines to hold. Anderson had another great SCOOP run but fell short in 3rd place.

Kamchatka 1 defeats danfiu to take Event #21-H title

Kamchatka 1 led the entire way during final table play but danfiu wasn’t far behind when they started their heads-up battle for the title. Unlike the extended length of play for the opening part of the final table, it didn’t take much to finish it off.

Before long, they both hit a flop worth getting the chips mixed up in the middle. Kamchatka 1 called a three-bet from danfiu to see the K♣ J♦ 5♦ flop and called when danfiu shoved his last 177,000.

danfiu tabled a big pair, open-ended straight draw Qâ™  Q♣ 10♦ 6♣ 4♥ against Kamchatka 1’s flush and gutshot draw A♣ Q♦ 9♦ 3â™  2♥ . The A♦ turn completed the straight for danfiu while also filling in the flush for Kamchatka 1 to lock up the title.

Both players made it through a tough field to get that far but there could be only one winner. danfiu will have to be content with his $35,834 second place payout while Kamchatka 1 is number one in the big 5-card PLO tournament.
