Home / News / SCOOP 2021: Back-to-back Leonard, plus Pye claims one for Red Spade

The Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) goes from strength to strength, with $8.5 million in prizes handed out, and some all-time champions taking chunks. Here are all the details, plus all the latest results.

TODAY’S HEADLINES

• Amazing Leonard makes it two in two nights
• Pye claims one for Red Spade Twitch army
• Boeken and Segebrecht make it three and four
• Weis and Lijó also back among winners

BEHIND THE HEADLINES

Another incredible victory for Leonard

Leonard goes back-to-back, wins huge $5K: This time yesterday, the SCOOP report was all about Patrick “pads1161” Leonard, who won the Afternoon Deep Stack event and closed the gap at the top of the Player of the Series standings. Flash forward 24 hours and here we are again — and this time it’s even bigger. Leonard last night won a second SCOOP title of the year, the fifth of his career, when he took down the enormous $5K PKO Sunday HR Special Edition (SCOOP-64-H). Leonard beat the brilliant Russian “hello_totti” ($14.6 million in online earnings) heads up when those two were the last of 255 entries remaining. The final table also featured Bert “girafganger7” Stevens, Dario “Secret_M0d3” Sammartino, Artur “mararthur1” Martirosyan and Teun “tinnoemulder” Mulder, so Leonard deserved every penny of his $258,007 payout, one of the biggest of SCOOP so far. We’ll look at how it affects the Player of the Series race later in the post. In the other two tiers of SCOOP-64, “kleinebakker007” of the Netherlands won $210,519, including bounties, for taking down the $530 “medium”, while the $55 “low” tournament, officially the Sunday Million Special Edition, is paused with nine left to play to a winner tonight.

Pye’s SCOOP dream comes true

Sweet as Pye for PokerStars streamer: There’s a SCOOP champion with a Red Spade beside his name, but it’s not Lex, Spraggy or Fintan. It’s not Grafton, Talbot or Shaban either. Today we doff our backwards baseball caps in the direction of Twitch streamer Mason “Pye_Face21” Pye, who took down the $109 buy-in Stud event for a maiden major title and $6,729. Pye is one of the most enthusiastic streamers in the PokerStars team, particularly when it comes to mixed games. He is the self-appointed leader of the “Mixed Game Movement”. That campaign should gather a huge momentum boost after this success, which came over a field of 351 entries and ended in a heads up deal between Pye and “afghan heart”. (Ami “UhhMee” Barer was also at the final.) No doubt we’ll be catching up with Pye very soon, either on the PokerStars Twitch broadcast or on the Blog. He is going to be one very sweet Pye indeed. The “high” buy-in version of the Stud went to Carlos “Carster” Chadha, who now has a SCOOP victory to match his WCOOP triumph from 2017. Chadha won $20,438 for this one.

Boeken is the PLO boss

Boeken wraps up PLO: He was chip leader at the start of the final, and by its end he was still at the top of the pile. Noah “Exclusive” Boeken won a third SCOOP title on Monday night by closing out the $5K PLO Six-Max High Roller, banking $157,427 for beating a field of 143 entries. The tournament began on Saturday but its final was held over to Monday so it could be streamed live on the PokerStars Twitch channel. And it offered a rare chance for viewers to see how some of the very best four-card players do it, with the likes of Dante “dantegoyaF” Goya, Eelis “EEE27” Pärssinen and Sweden’s “ShipitFTW911” joining Boejken at the final. None could match Boeken, however, and and he added this victory to an 8-Game title from last year and a PLO Heads Up victory from 2013. Boeken also has four WCOOP victories to his name, and is still crushing the very toughest fields.

Segebrecht back for fourth title

Sick one well again: Anyone wondering whether the “SsicK_OnE” was OK this year need worry no more. Claas Segebrecht, who plays under that name, is usually a fixture during PokerStars online series but didn’t add anything to his trophy cabinet during the first two weeks of SCOOP 2021. But he put that right last night, picking up first place in the $2,100 Sunday Warm-Up Special Edition, which was worth $176,351 after a heads-up deal with the UK’s “xMFPx”. It’s par for the course for Segebrecht, who has three previous titles in SCOOP (from 2015 and two in 2016) and one in WCOOP. The Warm-Up is one of the most prestigious titles on the PokerStars calendar and it had a final table to match its standing this time. Jon “apestyles” Van Fleet and WSOP champion Damian “pampa27” Salas made it to the lates stages, for example, finishing in seventh and sixth, respectively.

Weis back at it

All Weis on the night: Oliver Weis is something of an enigma in poker, popping up here and there to record huge wins and then disappearing again. We last saw him at the PokerStars Championship in Panama, where he played a full schedule and made the final table of the High Roller. Online, he plays from Austria under the name “sk2ll_m0dR” and last night he won the second SCOOP title of his career, beating Simon “C. Darwin2” Mattsson, of all people, heads up. The tournament was the $530 PKO Freezeout (SCOOP 62-H) and Mattsson was looking for a third title of the series. However he was second best to Weis, who claimed $66,097, exactly half of which came in bounties. Weis won a $530 Sunday Cooldown last year in SCOOP, during the series extension. Maybe he’ll stick around again now. Maybe not.

Lijo lands a SCOOP title

Lijó lands one: UK-based players haven’t had the best SCOOP by the country’s own lofty standards, perhaps owing to the fact that many of the other European players who often reside there for poker have seen out the pandemic at home. But there definitely are still a few around, as evidenced by a first SCOOP title for Lander “TuA133” Lijó, a Spaniard living in London. Lijó won the $1K SCOOP-66-H title last night for $136,630, condemning Jonah “RaiseUpBlind” Silverstein to a third runner-up finish of the series. (Silverstein does have one title too.) This final table also featured Niklas “Lena900” Astedt and Talal “raidalot” Shakerchi, but they were out in eighth and seventh, respectively. Lijó continued to fly the British flag all the way to the top, adding a SCOOP victory to a WCOOP title from 2016.

A totally normal one for Brazil: In the least surprising news item of the week, Brazilian players won another three titles overnight, and took first, second and third place in two of them. It’s overkill guys! The standout victory came from Renan Carlos “Internett93o” Bruschi, a two-time Sunday Million champion, who won the first SCOOP title of his career. That’s surprising because he has a documented $5.8 million in tournament winnings, and finished runner up in a big 7-Max Hold’em event earlier this year. Bruschi went all the way in the $109 8-Max (SCOOP-66-M), beating 6,136 entries to a first prize of $87,203. The other brilliant Brazilians were “BetoHas“, who won the $5.50 Mini Sunday Kickoff for $4,774 and “rafayamaki” who picked up $18,136 for winning the $11 NLHE 8-Max (SCOOP-66-L).

Welcome back Bolivia! Earlier in this series, we saw SCOOP breaking new ground in Europe when we crowned a first ever champion from Montenegro. Last night, another vastly underrepresented country snatched a title when Rodrigo “RodriDiaz3” Díaz of Bolivia won the $55 Sunday Kickoff Special Edition (SCOOP-62-M). Bolivian players have only once before tasted SCOOP success, a full decade ago in 2011 when “crazy169” won a $530 Limit Omaha Hi/Lo tournament, for $20K. Diaz’s prize was more than that. Even after taking the smallest slice of a three-way deal, he picked up $28,843, which included $13K in bounties. According to Pocket Fives, that brings Diaz’s lifetime cashes to $207,968 and becomes his biggest single victory. He previously finished third in a SCOOP low tournament in 2019, for $16,410, but this was bigger too than that. Good news for Bolivian poker: Diaz is only the third ranked player in the country, so more could follow.

Spraggy waiting in the wings: Nearly 700 players have already departed from SCOOP-70-H, a $530 buy-in four-max tournament, leaving 38 left. One of them is Ben “Spraggy” Spragg, who sits in fourth overall and will no doubt give his Twitch followers a fine show when the tournament resumes this evening. There’s $365K in the prize pool and $25K up top, plus bounties. Spraggy is on a roll.
