We’re used to seeing familiar usernames among those at the end of the Super Tuesday, the weekly $1,050 no-limit hold’em tournament at PokerStars that routinely draws online poker’s best and brightest. Winners often tend to reappear at final tables, with some managing to capture multiple titles.

This week saw just such a repeat performance, and in fact by the time the 616 players who began the event had battled down to just two, both of those remaining had won the Super Tuesday before, and both not that long ago. Brazil’s Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes just won the Super Tuesday in January, while Sergio “trujustrus” Cabrera of Portugal took down the crown last July.

The pair of champions would make a heads-up deal, then after a lengthy battle Cabrera would be the one taking down a second Super Tuesday title. Cabrera won $99,750 the first time around, and this time snuck up over the six-figure mark with a cool $103,745.85 score.

That big field meant a $616,000 prize pool, well over the $400K guarantee. It would take nearly six hours to play down to 72 and for the money bubble to burst, at which point Benny “toweliestar” Spindler led the way.

Less than two hours later they were down to 18 with Spindler still sitting inside the top three and Ihar “OMGitshunt” Soika having moved into the top spot.

Mike “StrungOut1” Wasserman (18th), arek2478 (17th), and Rytis “RichieA7s” Praninskas (16th) were the next three eliminated, each earning $4,928. m@kkan (15th), T-Macha (14th), and Pthelegend (13th) were the next out, picking up $6,160 apiece. Then Nicolas “PKaiser” Fierro (12th), NhFy (11th), and Ali Bang (10th) were successively eliminated, with each cashing for $7,392.

With Petrusa91 the new chip leader and Ihar “OMGitshunt” Soika not far behind, the final table was underway.

Seat 1: Ihar “OMGitshunt” Soika (Belarus) — 703,296
Seat 2: ramastar88 (Argentina) — 301,015
Seat 3: Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes (Brazil) — 235,707
Seat 4: WATnlos (Germany) — 85,315
Seat 5: Sergio “trujustrus” Cabrera (Portugal) — 330,821
Seat 6: talonaquiles (United Kingdom) — 122,590
Seat 7: Petrusa91 (Canada) — 724,930
Seat 8: Benny “toweliestar” Spindler (Austria) — 357,377
Seat 9: Justin “birddy420″ Ouimette (Canada) — 218,949

About 15 minutes after the final table started, a hand arose that saw Petrusa91 min-raise to 20,000 from under the gun, then the table folded around to the short stack talonaquiles in the big blind who shoved for just over 100,000 total and Petrusa91 called. talonaquiles had A♦ 10♦ but was pipped by Petrusa91’s A♥ Jâ™  . The board ran out J♦ 4♥ Qâ™  8♣ 8â™  , and talonaquiles was out in ninth.

The remaining eight battled for nearly 45 minutes more before the next knockout came. Following a middle-position min-raise to 28,000 from Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes, Petrusa91 called from the button, and Justin “birddy420″ Ouimette called from the big blind. The trio saw the flop come 5♥ 9♣ K♣ . Ouimette checked, Fernandes bet 32,500, Petrusa91 folded, then Ouimette check-raised all in for 86,699 and Fernandes called.

Ouimette had K♥ 10♠ for top pair while Fernandes had 8♦ 5♣ for bottom pair. The runout favored the latter, however, coming 8♠ then 5♠ to give Fernandes a full house and send Ouimette railward in eighth.

Ten minutes later it was ramastar88 raising from UTG, Fernandes three-betting from a seat over, ramastar88 shoving for 267,472 total, and Fernandes calling. It was a race between jricardosc’s A♣ K♣ and ramastar88’s Q♣ Qâ™  , and after a king fell on the turn Fernandes won and ramastar88 was eliminated in seventh.

The tournament pushed onward past the 11-hour mark, then following a Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes open from the button WATnlos reraise-pushed for a bit more than 260,000, getting a fold from the big blind and a call from Fernandes. WATnlos had K♦ Q♦ but had run into Fernandes’s Aâ™  A♥ , and a 4♣ K♣ A♦ flop all but sealed it for Fernandes. The 7♦ turn did give WATnlos a flush draw, but the river was the Q♥ and they were down to five.

A little while after that it was Benny “toweliestar” Spindler shoving from the big blind for almost 360,000 (a little over 14 BBs) after Petrusa91 limped in from the small. Petrusa91 snap-called, tabling Aâ™  K♣ while Spindler had K♥ 7♥ . The board didn’t help Spindler, and he was sent off in fifth.

About 15 minutes later Petrusa91 was again limping in, this time for 30,000 from the button, and after Ihar “OMGitshunt” Soika called as well from the small blind Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes raised to 111,111 from the BB. Petrusa91 called the raise and Soika stepped aside.

The flop came 10♣ 10♦ 5â™  , prompting an all-in shove by Fernandes after which Petrusa91 called all in with the just over 400,000 left behind. Fernandes had A♥ J♣ and was behind Petrusa91’s 7♣ 7♥ , but the A♣ next fell on fourth street to give the Brazilian the better two pair. The river was the 2♦ and Petrusa91 was done in fourth.

Another 15 minutes passed as they approached the tournament’s 12-hour mark, then a hand came up that saw Cabrera open-push from the small blind and Soika call all in for almost 530,000 (about 15 BBs) from the big blind. Cabrera had A♣ 10♣ while Soika showed Aâ™  4â™  , and after a 8♦ 9♦ 9â™  10♦ 6♥ runout Cabrera had a straight and an unimproved Soika was eliminated in third.

Heads-up play began with Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes out in front with just over 1.79 million versus the nearly 1.29 million of Sergio “trujustrus” Cabrera. They would play three small hands with Cabrera chipping up slightly, then they paused the tournament to discuss a possible deal.

“ICM” typed Fernandes in the chat box, adding “and lets play for 8 k,” showing that he’d gotten to this stage before in the Super Tuesday, although in his win back in January no deal was made.

Cabrera had been there before, too, of course, although he neither had made a deal when winning the Super Tuesday last July. Cabrera responded saying “lets see numbers first,” and soon the host did produce those figures with $8,000 set aside for the winner. Both players responded instantly.

trujustrus: i agree

jricardosc: hahahaha
HostJosephP [Commentator]: haha sorry, I can’t help you with that
jricardosc: here we drinking vodka with red bull
jricardosc: HAHAHAHA

Play soon resumed, and neither player was in any hurry to finish things off as they would battle another 50 minutes by which point trujustrus had built a substantial lead with more than 2.67 million to the just over 400,000 of Fernandes.

That’s when Cabrera open-shoved from the button with K♣ 6♣ and Fernandes called immediately after having picked up Q♥ Q♣ . The 5♦ 2♣ 9â™  flop and J♥ turn were both fine for Fernandes, but the K♥ came on the river to sink him, giving Cabrera the better pair and the title.

Congratulations to Sergio “trujustrus” Cabrera for earning a second Super Tuesday win, and kudos as well to Joao “jricardosc” Fernandes for making it to the heads-up deal and very nearly securing a second win himself.
