There was never any question that Stephen Chidwick ranked among the very best poker players in the world.

This week though he made it official.

Chidwick has a lot of things he can claim for his ten-year (and counting) poker career. Something like ten titles to his name and more than $15 million in tournament winnings, much of which earned at PokerStars events.

Now he’s added something even more valuable.

This week he became the first British player to reach the top of the Global Poker Index, having spent nine of the past ten weeks in second place.

Chidwick, from Deal, a seaside town in the UK (pop. 30,085), finally overtook Spanish pro Adrian Mateos to take stop spot.

Mateos, a former EPT Grand Final winner, had held on to top spot for 20 weeks, but gave up the lead thanks to Chidwick’s recent performance in Barcelona.

“Today I became the #1 ranked poker player in the world” Chidwick told the GPI website.

“Anyone close to me knows how long this has been a goal of mine and to finally get there is a great feeling. I owe a lot to the family, friends, study partners, investors whose unwavering support and belief pushed me to never give up and keep chasing my dreams.”

None of which is that surprising to anyone who has followed his results at PokerStars events:

• A High Roller win
• Five side event wins
• Nine High Roller final tables
• Seven side event final tables
• Three final tables in Asia
• Countless cash finishes

All of which puts him exactly where he wanted to be.
