Home / Uncategorized / Super Tuesday: Meditati0n breathes deep, denies Dhr. Awesome a third title (1-31-17)

To win the Super Tuesday twice is quite a feat, something Dhr. Awesome knows well from experience. Fresh off a TCOOP 2017 victory last week, the Dutch player made it past seven of the other eight finalists this week in search of a third career victory in this tournament. But Meditati0n, who brought a big lead into heads-up play, remained ahead for half an hour before cutting Dhr. Awesome’s quest short and laying claim to the $74,122.85 top prize.

This week’s Super Tuesday drew 409 players, building a $409,000 prize pool that the top 55 finishers would share. Past Super Tuesday finalist and Sunday Million runner-up Jon “luckyfish” Clark moved into the lead minutes after the money bubble popped and held onto it for most of the next two hours. He fell a bit behind with two tables left, but he was able to move back into second position on the final table bubble. He opened all-in with 9♦ 7♥ and caught a nine on the 5♣ 10â™  9♣ 2♥ 8â™  board to top bparis’s A♦ 2♦ , knocking the Canadian player out in 10th and setting up this final table:

Seat 1: Meditati0n (1,680,048 in chips)
Seat 2: Dylan “ImaLucSac” Linde (550,858 in chips)
Seat 3: MG10tze (1,546,746 in chips)
Seat 4: Reimund77 (261,138 in chips)
Seat 5: Jon “luckyfish89” Clark (2,176,367 in chips)
Seat 6: sangnv (426,919 in chips)
Seat 7: Dhr. Awesome (2,340,080 in chips)
Seat 8: Corey “Corlusion” Kempson (764,860 in chips)
Seat 9: rogeriolucas (477,984 in chips)

Two of the shorter stacks at the table were separated by one seat as the final table began at 10:33 p.m. ET with 10K/20K/2K blinds and antes. That meant MicroMillions 6 finalist rogeriolucas would have the button on SCOOP 2013 champ Dylan “ImaLucSac” Linde’s big blind as long as the table remained nine-handed. On the first of those rogeriolucas picked up J♣ J♥ , made a small raise to 44K, and then called all-in for 439K total when ImaLucSac shoved with A♥ 5♥ . The jacks held on the Q♣ 3♥ 7â™  5♣ Qâ™  board, and rogeriolucas earned the 907K-chip pot.

ImaLucSac was left to work with five big blinds. He got his remaining 80K in good a few hands later with Q♦ J♥ and looked to be a good value for the win when past Super Tuesday runner-up Corey “Corlusion” Kempson called in the big blind with Q♣ 2♦ . But the 6♦ 2♥ 6♥ flop gave Corlusion sixes and deuces, and when the turn and river fell 9♣ 6â™  , ImaLucSac left the tournament in ninth.

Both Vietnam’s sangnv and Finland’s Reimund77 had also come in short-stacked. Separated by just under one small blind’s worth of chips, neither had yet won a pot when sangnv open-shoved in early position with Q♥ Q♥ and Reimund77 called in the big blind 10♦ 10♥ . The A♣ 8♣ 9♣ 3â™  9â™  board gave sangnv the 415K-chip win and crippled Reimund77. The Finnish player was forced in on the next hand from the small blind with A♦ 4♣ and lost out to past WCOOP and Sunday Million finalist MG10tze’s 5♦ 5â™  , leaving in eighth.

sangnv closed out the hour with two wins, the latter with K♣ Qâ™  kings full of queens to beat rogeriolucas’s A♣ Q♥ for kings and queens. That moved the player from Vietnam up to 1.27M chips, or more than 50 big blinds with the stakes still at 12.5K/25K/2.5K.

The next half hour after the players returned from the break was dominated by Dhr. Awesome. The two-time Super Tuesday champion and SCOOP 2016 winner was mostly quiet in the first 15 minutes. But after that a series of steals and smallish pots began to add up, and picking up 7♣ 7♥ against sangnv’s 6♣ 6♥ moved the Dutch player up to 3.1M chips, more than 30 big blinds ahead of the competition.

Three hands after that win, sangnv opened for 62K in the cutoff and Dhr. Awesome re-raised to 168K with 8♣ 7♣ on the button. Corlusion, whose past Super Tuesday runner-up finish came against Dhr. Awesome, then made it four bets and 538K to go with 6♣ 6♥ in the small blind. sangnv folded but Dhr. Awesome called, and history repeated itself as Dhr. Awesome made a pair of sevens on the turn of the Q♥ 10♦ 3♠ 7♥ Q♣ board to knock out Corlusion in seventh.

Four hands after that, Dhr. Awesome picked up A♣ A♥ in the big blind and called when luckyfish moved in for 578K on the button. Rotten timing and a lack of help from the J♣ J♥ 8♥ 5♣ 4♣ board conspired to knock luckyfish out in sixth.

The rest of the hour passed with no more knockouts, giving Dhr. Awesome the lead with 4M chips and four opponents remaining as the calendar turned over to Wednesday morning ET. About 30 big blinds back sat Meditati0n, patiently waiting for an opportunity to chip up further – and one presented itself soon afterward in the form of Q♥ Qâ™  under the gun. The Uruguayan player min-raised to 70K and was the only caller when sangnv jammed for 582K on the button with K♦ J♣ . The queens remained ahead as the board came 4♥ 3♦ 7♦ A♣ 7♥ , and sangnv bowed out in fifth.

Winning 1.2M chips there pulled Meditati0n to within 20 big blinds of Dhr. Awesome’s leading chip stack. Winning 1.5M just 10 minutes later helped push the Uruguayan player into the lead. Meditati0n again min-raised under the gun, this time for 80K with J♥ Jâ™  , and called when MG10tze jammed on the button with A♦ Q♥ . The 8â™  3â™  4â™  J♦ 5♥ board gave Meditati0n a set of jacks, and MG10tze left in fourth.

rogeriolucas trailed two big stacks as three-handed play began, holding less than a quarter of the chips that either of the other two players were working with. But the Brazilian player made a game out of it for the better part of half an hour, starting with three small wins, including one uncontested on the turn for 429K, to get ahead of the blinds and antes a bit. Getting all-in with K♥ 9♥ against Dhr. Awesome’s K♦ Q♣ looked like it might be the end of the line, but then the board came 4♥ 7♥ 5♥ and rogeriolucas was back in the hunt with 1.7M chips.

Meditati0n and Dhr. Awesome had been trading the majority of the pots since the table went three-handed, though without a major confrontation among themselves. Then Meditati0n raised with Aâ™  K♣ on the button, and three bets later was all-in for 3.3M against Dhr. Awesome’s A♥ 10â™  . The Jâ™  K♥ 5â™  threatened a gutshot Broadway straight for Dhr. Awesome, but the A♣ turn and 9♣ river gave Meditati0n the 6.7M-chip win with aces and kings.

rogeriolucas raised to 110K with A♣ K♣ on the button three minutes later, and both Meditati0n and Dhr. Awersome called in the blinds to see the flop come Kâ™  2♣ Qâ™  . Both checked to rogeriolucas, who bet 210K with top pair, and then Meditati0n shoved in the small blind to drive Dhr. Awesome off the pot. Meditati0n was on a pure flush draw with 5â™  4â™  , so rogeriolucas was a 4-to-1 favorite after the 8♥ came on the turn. But the 7â™  river completed Meditati0n’s flush for 2.7M, sending rogeriolucas to the rail in third.

Dhr. Awesome was still in the running for a third career Super Tuesday title with just one opponent remaining, albeit at a big disadvantage in chips with 25K/50K/5K blinds and antes:

Seat 1: Meditati0n (8,544,086 in chips)
Seat 7: Dhr. Awesome (1,680,914 in chips)

The two would trade jabs for almost half an hour, with a few big punches scattered in between. The first seven-figure pot, an uncontested 1.2M-chip win for Dhr. Awesome in position with the board reading 10♥ 8♦ 4♣ 4♥ 9♥ , didn’t come for 10 full minutes. The second came three hands later and went to Meditati0n, whose seven wins in nine hands whittled Dhr. Awesome’s stack back down to 1.38M.

Dhr. Awesome looked likely to bust out minutes later after limping on the button with K♦ 7♠ , then moving all-in when Meditati0n re-raised with A♠ Q♠ , especially after the flop came Q♣ 5♠ 9♠ . The 9♦ was no help on the turn, but the K♥ gave Dhr. Awesome a 2.76M-chip lifeline with a pair of kings.

The pots remained on the small side for 10 more minutes. Then Meditati0n min-raised to 140K on the button and called Dhr. Awesome’s re-raise to 413K to see a Kâ™  9â™  A♥ flop. Meditati0n called bets of 348K there and 489K on the A♥ turn, then moved all-in after Dhr. Awesome checked the 4♦ river. Dhr. Awesome folded and was left with 1.1M chips, all of which went in the middle from the button on the next hand with Aâ™  5â™  . Meditati0n called in the big blind with K♥ 8♣ and made a pair of eights on the 9♣ 6â™  8♦ 5♦ 2â™  board to bring the tournament to a close.

Dhr. Awesome may have missed out narrowly on that third career Super Tuesday win, but finishing the runner-up was worth a healthy $54,482.76. As for Meditati0n, remaining focused and calm (at least outwardly) led to the title and $74,112.85. Congratulations to both players on successfully navigating one of the toughest weekly tournament fields around!
