The New Guy: A recreational poker player’s high stakes journey

October 18, 2016

Imagine you’re a guy who plays penny-ante poker. You face your toughest competition when you go to the pub to play with your friends. You have a day job that takes up most of your time.

Now…imagine you’re that same guy and you find yourself playing against the world’s best with big money on the line.

That’s Dan Jones’ story.

I found Dan Jones at an European Poker Tour stop. He’d gotten up early one morning to seek the advice of Daniel Negreanu on how to play a big money poker tournament for the first time. Afterward, I asked Jones if I could follow him as he tried to put Negreanu’s advice to the test.

Neither of us had any idea what we were getting ourselves into or that the story would eventually involve one of poker’s fiercest players, Fedor Holz.

What happened? Well, grab something to drink, put on your headphones, and sit back for the next 17 minutes as you ride along on Dan Jones’ journey through the world of high stakes poker.
