What can we learn from this experience? First of all, some people have way too much free time if they have nothing better to do than to pry into stranger’s affairs. Secondly, if you are a human being living on this planet, you had better get used to prejudice. People will often jump to the most ridiculous conclusions based on superficial aspects such as the clothes or make up you wear, the car you drive, the city you live in or your daily habits. My neighbors do not know that I sometimes work up to 12 hours a day or that I have not taken a day off in months. Even if they knew it I am sure they would not care, as they have already formed their own idea of what my life is like.
If you are considering playing poker for a living you will have familiarize with this. Far away from the glamour and excitement surrounding events like the EPT, PCA or LAPT, you will have to deal with people who despite knowing very little or nothing at all about poker, have strong ideas about it. Many of your relatives will not be as enthusiastic as you are about your career choice. Your schedule will be usually crazy compared to those with 9-to-5 jobs and your friends might not be understanding when you tell them you will not be able to make it to the football match on Sunday because you have to play the WCOOP Main Event.
So what is my advice to you? Sometimes you need to trust yourself and ignore all the comments around you because “haters gonna hate” no matter what you do; it could be playing poker or any other project you have on your mind. I am sure that even if I was one of the most brilliant physicists in the world attempting to discover the mysteries of the universe, my neighbors would still find something to criticize me about. However, when you are passionate about what you do and work day and night towards your goals you should not care about detractors. Those who love you will (eventually) support you, while the others will keep on looking for any reason to disparage you, unable to see beyond their own prejudice and potentially losing an opportunity to learn from people with different views. Be confident in yourself, work hard and unlike me, do not waste your time eavesdropping your neighbors’ conversations.
