WCOOP 2011: Pay the Tim Piper; Brit wins Event #46 $320 Mixed PLHE/PLO

September 20, 2011

Those all-in shoves weren’t quite so frequent on Tuesday.

The 46th event of the 2011 edition of the World Championship of Online Poker on PokerStars featured a rotation of Pot-Limit Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha. The pot limit form of big bet poker certainly necessitates a different skill set than the usual no limit format, requiring better post flop play combined with careful bet sizing requirements.

A total of 917 players took their shot in this $320 buy-in tournament, creating a prize pool of $275,100 that bested PokerStars’ $225,000 guarantee.

Members of Team PokerStars Pro that participated included Richard Toth, Andre Aakkari, Noah “Exclusive” Boeken, Ana Marquez, George Danzer and Johnathan Duhamel. Members of Team PokerStars Online in the field included Andre “acoimbra” Brito Coimbra, Javier “El_Canonero” Dominguez, Mickey “mement_mori” Petersen and Diego “vgreen22” Brunelli.

Those cashing included Martin “AABenjamimAA” Hruby in 83rd place ($632.73), Liv Boeree in 67th place ($742.77), Alex Kravchenko in 48th place ($880.32) and Jorge “twin_caracas” Arias in 32nd place ($1,127.91).

The final table was reached after nearly 11 hours of play when bananeFfm’s pocket presto (that’s fives in RGP talk) lost to the ace-eight held by freshleo111.

Final table seating and chip counts:

Seat 1 — PJShark78 (1,227,520)
Seat 2 — freshleo111 (689,313)
Seat 3 — Tim Piper (465,667)
Seat 4 — luetch1 (474,252)
Seat 5 — Flush_Entity (231,954)
Seat 6 — sootedacerag (576,659)
Seat 7 — C12SLY (226,611)
Seat 8 — 4uvixa (287,034)
Seat 9 — Azkiy (405,990)

Flush_Entity was an early final table exit. Playing 8K/16K blinds PLHE, 4uvixa raised to 32K from under the gun plus one. It folded around to Flush_Entity in the small blind, who made it 112K. 4uvixa put Flush_Entity all in for 192K.

The hands:
Flush_Entity J♦ J♥
4uvixa A♣ K♠

The flop and turn of 7♥ 7♦ 5♣ 4♥ looked good for the double up, but the K♥ came on the river to end the Canadian’s day in ninth place, which was worth $3,438.75.

As the game changed to 10K/20K blinds PLO, C12SLY, with an avatar of Heath Ledger’s Joker, busted next. C12SLY raised to 70K from the cutoff and 4uvixa reraised to 180K on the button. C12SLY called all in for 11K less with A♥ 10♠ 9♠ 6♦ and was dominated against the A♠ A♣ 10♣ 6♠ held by 4uvixa. The harmless board of 7♣ 6♣ K♥ 2♥ K♦ booted C12SLY in eighth, earning the player from the United Kingdom $5,639.55.

After that hot start, 4uvixa ran into a brick wall in the form of our chip leader, PJShark78, who got lucky on the turn to bust the Russian.

4uvixa built the bankroll by $8,363.04 with the seventh-place nod, and PJShark78 built a massive chip lead with nearly 2.5 million–or more than four times the next closest stack.

Sootedacerag found himself short stacked after getting it in on a king high flop with a pair of kings, but Azkiy rivered a flush against him. A few hands later at the 12.5K/25K PLHE level, sootedacerag got his last 52K into the pot preflop in strong condition with 7♥ 7♣ against freshleo111’s K♠ 3♥, but a board of 6♠ 5♦ K♥ 2♦ 4♣ sent sootedacerag packing with the sixth-place prize of $11,114.04.

Luetch1 also faced a severe uphill climb with a small stack and could not overcome it. Only a few hands after sootedacerag’s departure, freshleo111 raised to 50K in the cutoff and luetch1 got all in for 73K in the small blind, which freshleo111 called. It was a domination as luetch1 showed Q♦ 10♦ and freshleo111 showed K♠ 10♣. The board of 2♠ A♠ J♥ 5♠ 9♠ gave freshleo111 a flush. Leutch1 earned $19,944.75 for fifth.

The tables turn

Two key hands put freshleo111 on top of the field.

First, PJShark78 made it 59K from the small blind and freshleo111 reraised to 147K in the big blind. After PJShark78 called, the players saw and checked a flop of K♦ 7♦ 2♣. After the turn 2♥ fell, PJShark78 bet 99K and freshleo111 called. The river 8♣ set off fireworks. PJShark78 bet 135K, freshleo111 raised all in to 472K and PJShark78 called.

The hands:
PJShark78 K♥ J♣
freshleo111 8♠ 8♥

The river had given freshleo111 the set and the double up, which prompted PJShark78 to respond in an ungentlemanly manner “nfc”.

Freshleo111 took the lead by knocking out Azkiy. Freshleo111 raised to 50K in the cutoff and Azkiy made it 135K in the small blind. Frehleo111 called and took a flop of 9♥ 3♠ J♥. Azkiy then bet 145K, freshleo111 made it 313K and Azkiy pushed all in for 732K. Freshleo111 quickly called with the 9♣ 9♦ for another set while Azkiy held K♣ J♣ in a bit of deja vu from the earlier hand. The turn and river came 7♣ 8♥ and Azkiy was eliminated in fourth, and received $19,944.75.

The chip lead shuffled to a third player on this hand:

Freshleo111 then went from the penthouse to the outhouse. Playing 15K/30K blinds PLO, PJShark78 raised to 67K from the button, freshleo111 pushed all in for 200K from the small blind and both Tim Piper and PJShark78 called. The players checked down the board of 6♣ 4♣ 3♥ 7♠ 5♣ and PJShark78 won the hand with an eight-high straight holding 8♥ A♥ 6♠ K♣. Freshleo111 won $26,584.70 for third.

PJShark78 and Tim Piper then quickly agreed to a deal that would pay the former $39,485.33 and the later $41,295.67, with $4,500 and the bracelet still to play for.

The heads-up battle would not last long–eight hands in fact. Playing 20K/40K blinds PLHE, PJShark78 raised to 80K on the button and Tim Piper called. After the Q♦ 7♠ 8♠ flop, Tim Piper checked, PJShark78 bet 80K, Tim Piper check raised to 210K, PJShark three bet to 535K and Tim Piper put PJShark78 all in for another 1.05 million.

The hands:
Tim Piper Q♣ 10♣
PJShark78 Q♥ 6♠

The pair of queens, ten kicker, was good enough for the victory after the turn and river came 7♣ 3♣.

Final table standings:
1st — Tim Piper ($45,795.67)
2nd — PJShark78 ($39,485.33)
3rd — freshleo111 ($26,684.70)
4th — Azkiy ($19,944.75)
5th — luetch1 ($13,865.04)
6th — sootedacerag ($11,114.04)
7th — 4uvixa ($8,363.04)
8th — C12SLY ($5,639.55)
9th — Flush_Entity ($3,438.75)
