WCOOP 2011: The Brat Pack Makes a Comeback in PLO

September 05, 2011

The fourth event of the 2011 edition of the World Championship of Online Poker on PokerStars, a $320 Pot-Limit Omaha tournament, drew 1,697 players. The resulting $509,100 prize pool nearly doubled the guarantee of $300,000.

Of this field, 216 players earned some dough. While such Team PokerStars notables as Jonathan Duhamel, Daniel “KidPoker” Negreanu, Joe Hachem and Viktor “Isildur1” Blom fell early, the team was represented in the cash by Kristian “CharismA3” Martin in 123rd place ($763.65) and Anders “Donald” Hoyer Berg in 70th ($1,120.02.) George Danzer lasted longest among the PokerStars pros, finally succumbing in 47th place ($1,323.66).

While the money line was reached at rapid pace, it was a a slow slog to the final table. JUVELNEO became the final table bubble player when he shoved all in for 268K from the big blind over the top of an initial raise on the button by Jonny White1. The former held K♠ K♥ 6♦ 5♣ while the latter showed A♣ A♥ Q♦ 3♥. The board improved neither hand and the bullets sent us off to the land of the final nine.

Final table participants:

Seat 1 — TuggiGumma (802,657)
Seat 2 — Gakn29 (1,219,040)
Seat 3 — Daddddymufff (448,777)
Seat 4 — Jonny White1 (1,575,927)
Seat 5 — gillete (1,363,258)
Seat 6 — Mazelucky (164,764)
Seat 7 — Jamie_KK (1,810,238)
Seat 8 — bratpack1979 (810,527)
Seat 9 — steve66sp (289,812)

Aces would not work for our ninth-place finisher. Daddddymufff raised to 75K from middle position with blinds at 15K/30K and bratpack1979 called. After a flop of 5♦ 7♠ J♠, bratpack1979 checked and Dadddddymufff bet 90K. Bratpack1979 check raised almost enough to put Dadddddymuff all in and this player put the rest of his chips in the pot.

The hands:
Daddddymufff A♣ A♠ 10♦ 2♣
bratpack1979 J♥ 9♣ 6♥ 5♣

The turn Q♦ and river 4♣ let bratpack1979’s flopped two pair hold up and sent Daddddymufff off to collllecttt $5,091 in prize money.

The short stacked Mazelucky finished in eighth after getting his last 120K all in preflop with A♦ J♥ 7♦ 6♠ against the K♦ 5♥ 9♣ 10♦ of TuggiGumma. The board ran out 6♣ 8♥ Q♥ J♣ 2♥ to give Tuggi Gumma the straight. Mazelucky got just shy of $9,000 for the upright infinity finish.

One hand after doubling up his meager stack, steve66sp was bounced from the event on this hand:

Steve66sp earned $14,000 plus one quarter for finishing in seventh.

Although Jamie_KK came into the final table in great shape with close to 2 million in chips, he found himself short-stacked near the midway point after a combination of being blinded off and losing some key pots. Down to about 175K, Jamie_KK raised to 105K from under the gun plus one and bratpack1979 called to his immediate left. Gakn29 reraised to 450K from the small blind, Jamie_KK went all in for his last 70K and bratpack1979 called.

After a flop of J♠ 9♠ K♦, Gakn29 shoved for 741K and bratpack1979 acquiesced. The flop was dandy for Jamie_KK and his K♥ J♣ 10♣ 9♦, but the turn and river combination of 5♥ A♣ gave Gakn29 and his A♠ A♦ Q♣ 7♣ the winning hand. For sixth, Jamie_KK collected $19,091.25.

The play slows

Play continued five handed for about 20 minutes, with the short stacks bounced and each player holding chips in the seven figures. Finally, Jonny White1 led for 86K under the gun and gillete pumped it to 318K one to his left. After the other three folded, Jonny White1 called. JW led for 520K after a flop of 8♣ 8♦ 2♦ and gillete though only momentarily before putting Jonny White1 all in for another 215K. Jonny White1 showed 9♦ 10♦ J♥ 6♥ while gillete held aces. The flush draw and running straight draw missed and the Russian exited in fifth with $24,182.25.

Mumblings of a deal began among the players, but Gakn29, a Supernova player and the lowest stacked player at the time, put the kabosh on the talk with the comment: “theres no way ill take the short end of a deal so no point talking.”

That led TuggiGumma to chirp, “u seem to be playing so good.”

Perhaps it was karma that led Gakn29 to double through TuggiGumma two times minutes later when his kings and aces held in preflop battles.

Said Gakn29: “i do coach how to double up two BB in a row on CR just fyi.”

Those victories only evened the score, with TuggiGumma, Gakn29 and gillete all close in chips with about 2.5 million each. Bratpack1979 found himself the short stack with less than 1 million in chips. However, the Australian caught a break when he got all in on a jack high flop against TuggiGumma’s aces and nut flush draw and caught a king for two pair on the turn that held. This put TuggiGumma, who held the chip lead about five minutes earlier, down and nearly out with 600K.

It was fitting that Gakn29 was the one to finish off TuggiGumma:

TuggiGumma earned $34,109.70 for fourth.

Playing three handed and with Gakn29 now in the lead, the players agreed to pause the clock and discuss a deal. While Gakn29 was guaranteed $64,000 and change and a chance to play for an additional $6,000, he declined the deal and play continued.

After a protracted three-way battle, gillete was first to fall. The Canadian raised to 350K on the button and bratpack1979 called in the small blind. Bratpack1979 led out for 800K on the 10♠ 5♠ 6♠ flop and gillete pushed all in for 920K total. Bratpack1979 showed a semi-bluff with A♥ 8♥ 7♣ J♣ against the K♦ K♣ 5♣ 6♥ held by gillete. The draw came through with the 4♣ river. Gillete notched $45,819 for the bankroll for the third-place finish.

Although the heads-up chip lead swung back and forth, bratpack1979 used the initial lead to his advantage. With approximately a 5 million to 3 million chip lead, bratpack1979 called a 320K raise by Gakn29 preflop and then checked a flop of 2♦ 5♠ J♠. Gakn29 bet 240K and bratpack1979 check raised to 840K. Gakn29 three bet and then got the rest in on the turn after the 10♦ fell.

The hands:
bratpack1979 10♠ Q♠ 7♥ 9♣
Gakn29 9♦ 10♥ A♦ A♥

The flush came in for bratpack1979 when the 7♠ hit, propelling the Aussie to victory. Gakn29 had to settle for the runner-up prize of $61,092.

Final table payouts:
