Home / Uncategorized / Sunday Warm-Up: Mortan23 rallies late to win $54K after four-way deal

While the PCA Main Event heats up as Steve O’Dwyer seems to zeroing in on capturing as many titles as possible with a top-three chipcount from Day 1A after Day 1B finished play. Normally an excellent feat worthy of a good night’s sleep to be ready for battle when Day 2 starts. Instead he took the day off to win the $50K single day high roller title.

Just like most normal workers tend to use Sunday as a day of leisure, there were 2,400 players trying to earn a decent yearly salary in ten hours at the $425,000.00 guarantee Sunday Warm-Up. After ten hours of play four players would chop up the remaining prize pool as Mortan23 took the least amount from the cut, but rallied to take down the Sunday Major for $54,009.54

Read on below for the final table details on Mortan23’s victory.

While 18 players would enjoy the eighth hourly break, it would only take 20 minutes to leave 11 left to vie for the $75,840.00 up top.

Among those leaving the party a little early IDUR LETNIZ (15th place, $2,448.00) who made the final table of 2014 WCOOP’s Event #26 finishing fourth for $7.5K. Super Tuesday champ, Dmaster681, would also fall a bit short in trying to notch another Major final table taking $2,448.00 in 13th place.

After a lengthy hand-for-hand period with the blinds up to 30K/60K ante 6K japiejesus would open shove a shortstack of a little under 600K A♣ 6♠ . Panny3 would shove 1.1 million with A♣ 10♦ as the table chip leader, fityfmi, in the big blind, called everyone with pocket tens 10♣ 10♥ . Things looked clear for a scoop and an eight player final table, but a rivered straight 5♣ Q♣ 5♠ K♥ J♥ for Panny3 led to the full final table below:

SundayWarmUp_011016.jpg

Seat 1: SpaceBonyiga (946538 in chips)
Seat 2: cigarromata (2145665 in chips)
Seat 3: cheeky4714 (3463858 in chips)
Seat 4: Jakub_Odvar (4690695 in chips)
Seat 5: glammc (1029684 in chips)
Seat 6: fityfmi (4012049 in chips)
Seat 7: Panny3 (2952082 in chips)
Seat 8: Mortan23 (651036 in chips)
Seat 9: buzzcorks (4108393 in chips)

SpaceBonyiga would come into the final table with less than a million chips and leave with a less than optimal result. 15 minutes into the final table with the blinds up to 40K/80K ante 8K fityfmi would raise to 173,600 as SpaceBonyiga pushed all-in for 1.5 million. Fityfmi’s big slick Aâ™  K♣ made for an easy call as SpaceBonyiga turned up pocket tens 10♥ 10♣ . Safe on the flop, not so much afterwards 3♦ 6♦ 8â™  Kâ™  K♦ as trip kings sent SpaceBonyiga with $4,080.00 in ninth place.

Another 15 minutes later with the blinds moving up to 50K/100K ante 10K and a rather crowded leaderboard, buzzcorks led out for 225,000 chips as cigarromata held pocket sixes 6♥ 6♦ shoving for 1.82 million. Buzzcorks covered and called, far out in front with jacks J♥ J♠ . The two-outer (then one-outer) would not make its way to the K♠ 7♥ 7♠ 5♠ A♦ board as cigarromata earned $6,960.00 in eighth place.

It seems that bad things are happening every 15 minutes during this final table. Shortly after the ninth hourly break as the blinds moved up again to 65K/130K ante 13K two of the larger stacks at the table went at each other preflop. Cheeky4714 started the betting with a raise to 299,000 to Jakub_Odvar three-bet to 593,444. Fityfmi would shove 4.58 million hoping the chips and pocket fives 5♦ 5♣ would scare away the original raisers. Cheeky4714 bailed, but Jakub_Odvar was up for the challenge and called all-in for 3.58 million holding A♥ K♥ . A king on the flop was not enough to prevent the flood of clubs J♣ 7♣ K♣ A♣ 9♦ from knocking out Jakub_Odvar in seventh place ($11,760.00).

No need to wait 15 minutes for the next elimination, this time it would only ten.

Panny3 with a final table in WCOOP (2014, Event #13 finishing fourth) was hoping for a better result during this Major final table. Unfortunately, Panny3 would bring the wrong cards to the final fight pushing all-in from the small blind with 5♣ A♥ as Mortan23 in the big blind called with K♥ A♠ . The better hand pre-flop prevailed J♦ 3♠ 8♥ 9♣ 2♦ as Panny3 earned $16,560.00 in sixth place.

Three hands later with the stirrings of chop talks in the air, glammc sitting on a shorter stack of 1.49 million would open shove from the small blind holding K♦ 2♣ . Fityfmi was not in a giving mode and made the call with J♠ Q♦ . The king on the flop was surrounded by a triplet of jacks J♥ J♣ K♥ J♦ 4♦ sending glammc away in fifth place ($21,360.00) and without a seat at the four-way chop.

Moments later the foursome would stop the tournament clock long enough to make the deal below leaving $8K on the table for the weekly champion:

fityfmi(Norway) $53,095.24
buzzcorks(Norway) $48,300.00
cheeky4714(United Kingdom) $46,276.82
Mortan23(Faroe Islands) $46,009.54

After the tenth hourly break fityfmi relinquished the chip lead to Mortan23 as buzzcorks stood in desperate need of a double-up. With the blinds up to 100K/200K ante 20K buzzcorks shoved for 2.6 million from the button as cheeky4714 made the call with pocket aces A♥ Aâ™  . Bad timing for buzzcorks’ 10♦ 9♣ as the board 2♦ 3♣ 8♣ A♦ 2â™  confirmed it was time for buzzcorks to leave in fourth place ($48,300.00).

Eight minutes later fityfmi would get a rude send off. After taking the largest chunk of the four-way chop, fityfmi would be all-in with the board showing A♣ 8♠ 9♣ 10♥ . Cheeky4714 made the call with top pair A♦ Q♠ but fityfmi flipped up the turned two pair 8♣ 10♣ and a flush draw. Unfortunately for fityfmi, the 9♥ river would give cheeky4714 a higher two pair and claim the 5.7 million chip pot. Fityfmi claimed the chopped $53,095.24 for third place as heads-up play started off with a bang.

Down 9.6 million to cheeky4714’s 14.3 million, Mortan23 would double up on the first hand of heads-up play after both players made trip jacks on the turn 8♦ 10♦ Jâ™  J♥ K♥ but Mortan23 already pair the kicker J♦ 10♣ for the eventual winning full house.

After five minutes of struggle trying overcome the large deficit cheeky4714 would go all-in preflop holding 4♥ K♣ as Mortan23 found a real hand in pocket nines 9♥ 9â™  and making the call. Cheeky4714 would pair the wrong card Aâ™  4♦ 8♣ 10♣ 3â™  as Mortan23’s nines held on to win this week’s Sunday Warm-Up title and earn $54,009.54!
