It’s been a long and successful summer for players wearing the Red Spade of PokerStars.
As ever, the World Series of Poker Main Event, which got under way today, is the tournament that sets the pulse racing fastest across this month. But the World Series is precisely that–a series–and the Main Event is tournament #73 of #74 total.
Many of Team PokerStars Pro’s leading lights have been at the grind since the very start. Indeed, Liv Boeree and Igor Kurganov earned their first career bracelets when they won the first open event of the WSOP, the $10,000 Tag Team championship.
Since then, some familiar faces have taken the baton and typically it’s been the Daniel Negreanu show for much of the time since then. Negreanu wracked up his 11th cash of the series today, when he made a deep run in a $3,000 NLHE event that is still playing out now. Negreanu went out in around 32nd place, two days after he went all the way to fifth in the $50,000 Poker Player’s Championship.
The only thing that has escaped him this year is a bracelet. Negreanu has been to five final tables, all of them in events with buy-ins of at least $10,000.
Barry Greenstein has wound back the clock this year as well and has matched Negreanu cash-for-cash. Greenstein has 11 in-the-money finishes too, although his total prize money is roughly one tenth of Negreanu’s.
Team Pro’s Indian tournament beast Aditya Agarwal has also had a fine series this year. Agarwal has finished in the money 10 times–and has a brilliant Main Event record too. At time of writing, he’s still in the “Giant” tournament and is well stacked. He will play the Main Event once that one is done.
By Jason Mercier’s extraordinary high standards, eight cashes represents a pretty meagre return. This time last year he was Player of the Year and very nearly won three bracelets (and a heap of side bets). He had to make do with only two, but Mercier has made only one final table this time and was out in fifth.
But bettering all those, at least in terms of bottom line, is Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, whose prize money from this year’s series currently sits at around $2.3 million. The huge lion’s share of that came from his spectacular second-place finish in the $111,111 High Roller for One-Drop event. ElkY has added another five cashes, and we’ll be catching up with him this week.
Here’s the full list of Team Pro cashes so far this year. All of these players, and more, will be entering the Main Event too.
