Yesterday it was about reaching the final table of the $50,000 Players Championship for Daniel Negreanu. Some 24 hours later he leads it, with six players left, and his seventh career bracelet in sight.
The field was reduced from 15 to six after another long day, with Negreanu now leading against some all-star opposition. Then again that’s how it should be, given the Players Championship is arguable the most prestigious event of the World Series.
It’s a point not lost on Negreanu himself.
“I helped create this event when it was originally created years ago,” Negreanu told PokerNews. “I always was so disappointed I hadn’t done better. I had a couple of cashes and last year came in 12th. I always felt, especially this year more than ever, that it’s something I wanted to win.”
Negreanu is hardly without success, but a bracelet when play continues on Thursday would make a good summer perfect.
“I’ve won Player of the Year twice, but this is the best year I’ve ever had, especially if I can top it off with a bracelet. I’d have six top 20 finishes.”
Here’s how things will look when play restarts.
Seat | Player | Country | Chip Count |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Ivo Donev | Austria | 2,990,000 |
2 | Johannes Becker | Germany | 4,560,000 |
3 | Daniel Negreanu | Canada | 5,930,000 |
4 | Elior Sion | United Kingdom | 4,750,000 |
5 | Paul Volpe | United States | 1,570,000 |
6 | Isaac Haxton | United States | 5,205,000 |
As well as the bracelet there’s a first prize of nearly $1.4 million at stake, which should prove enough of an incentive Negreanu’s opposition to ruin his fairy tale. All of which will be revealed later today, with a report on the Blog tomorrow.
