There are late nights caused by excess, and then there are late nights in Las Vegas, caused by a deep run in the $50,000 Players Championship, with a first prize of nearly $1.4 million waiting for someone at the pay-out desk. We’ve all had the former; Daniel Negreanu has had more of his fair share of the latter.

A few hours ago played stopped for the night (morning?) in what is arguably the biggest event on this year’s schedule. While it lacks the familiarity of the Main Event (which gets underway this weekend) it makes up for in prestige. It takes talent and good fortune to win the big one. It takes talent and more talent to win the Players Championship. Which luckily (bad word?) Negreanu has, along with chips, and a poker player’s indifference to late nights.

Negreanu is among the last 15 players, bagging up 2.2 million which is good for fifth place. He’ll be joined on his return by nothing but the “talented talents” of the game, players like chip leader Isaac Haxton, Mathew Ashton, Shaun Deeb, Paul Volpe (that’s just the top four), along with Seiver, Obst, Shakerchi and Matusow.

It’s been a good year so far for Kid Poker, who began the series with a second place finish in the Omaha Hi/Lo. Added to that have been multiple cashes, this being his seventh, and the tantalising prospect of a seventh career bracelet.

Not your typical work day then when play restarts later on Wednesday, but an intriguing one for those of us left pressing refresh.
