PayPal: Authenticating your transactions

Making a payment within the EU? Now it will be safer, thanks to an extra authentication step that applies to all transactions. The list of countries also includes Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. This update is a part of the second Payment Services Directive (PSD2).

How does it work?

When you make a transactional request, the website prompts you to verify your identity using a code. It'll let PayPal know it's you and protect you against potential fraud.

Should I do this every time?

If you are logging in from a trusted device and PayPal recognizes it, you can log in with your email address or just your username and password.

But you might need a one-time passcode at times.

PayPal may call your registered phone number and ask you to repeat this code. It'll appear on your device. Simply follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Do you need to update the phone number registered to your PayPal account?

  1. Log in to PayPal.
  2. Go to the 'Settings' icon next to 'Log Out'
  3. Select 'Your Profile'
  4. Choose 'Update' next to 'Phone'

Got issues? Please get in touch with PayPal directly. You can find more information on PayPal and PSD2 on this page.
