It was not the result he hoped for, but it was better than almost everybody did in this year’s World Series of Poker Europe. This afternoon in Cannes, France, Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mericer placed eighth in the WSOPE main event for €84,672.

Mercier started the day with the shortest stack at the table and was looking for an early double-up to get in him in a place he could fight the chip-leading Phil Hellmuth. Mercier found his hand early. He got it in with AQ but ran unto Sergii Baranov’s AK. Baranov made his king on the turn, and Mercier’s day was done.

As we pointed out yesterday, Mercier is running hot again after a rough start to the year. A couple of weeks ago, Mercier won a WCOP bracelet in the WCOOP $10,300 8-game for $253,425. Now, with the WSOPE final table behind him, Mercier is off for Sanremo for the European Poker Tour.

Anyone who knows anything about Mercier knows Sanremo is a special place. Four years ago, Mercier launched his career with a championship title in the same city.

Now he’s headed back with more than $300,000 in new winnings and an eye on a new title.

Congrats, Jason, on a great run in Cannes, and good luck in Italy.
