If you’re over the age of 30 we’ll forgive you if you haven’t heard of Twitch.
A spinoff from the site Justin.TV, Twitch was originally a live streaming platform for video gamers (named after Twitch gameplay), and it quickly grew into a monster.
In 2014 it was the fourth largest source of traffic on the internet in the U.S., and in November of that year, it opened its doors to poker.
The two are a perfect match. Twitch lets you watch people play poker live (with a short delay for security) while they provide analysis over the top.
Jason Somerville is the Twitch poker trailblazer, with an incredible 17,721,787 (and counting!) total views on his Run It Up Channel, but other Team PokerStars Pros like Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Lex Veldhuis are regulars too.
Watching Twitch is a great way to improve your game, and in the right hands, a Twitch stream is hugely entertaining, but the platform is also bringing new players into the game.
Players that have grown up on top Twitch games like Counter-Strike, League of Legends and Hearthstone.
“Twitch is a great platform to get new people into the game and learn to play poker for free from some of the best pros in the game,” said Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu.
Need more convincing? With dozens of channels streaming 24/7, there have been plenty of epic poker moments on Twitch, but these are the five best.
5. When a Man’s Gotta Go
Date: April 20, 2015
Starring: Daniel Negreanu
Watch it!:
Daniel Negreanu doesn’t have many leaks in his game but he treated the poker world to one when he took his laptop and 4,300 Twitch viewers to the bathroom with him during a mixed-game session on PokerStars.
Unfortunately, we’ll never know how Negreanu would have reacted to getting aces. Instead he’s dealt ten-two and makes an easy fold, giving him time to go about his business without further distraction.
“When I do something I typically jump in with both feet and do it at 100 percent,” Negreanu said. “So when I decided to stream, I figured I might as well ACTUALLY stream so I don’t miss any hands!”
Mike “Timex” McDonald was one of Negreanu’s viewers at the time and he let the world know exactly what was going on in this hilarious tweet.
I'm currently one of 4300 people watching a stream of a man pissing http://t.co/NMUNvg1u0k @RealKidPoker

4. $1,000,000 Spin & Go!
Date: April 28, 2015
Starring: Jaime Staples and bladsonpoker
Watch it!:
Seven minutes and 18 seconds. That’s all it took for bladsonpoker from Poland to win $1,000,000 from a $5 Spin & Go.
These seven minutes and 18 seconds probably felt like a lifetime until a flush and straight collided to give the Polish player the biggest win of his life.
Jaime Staples was there to watch it all go down on his Twitch stream, but what he didn’t see was that after scooping a cool million, bladsonpoker carried on playing a $4.40 tournament until he busted 90 minutes later.
That’s one way to celebrate.
3. So sick!
Date: May 18, 2015
Starring: Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier and Jenny No
Watch it!:
There’s nothing like the thrill of playing a big final table and Grospellier proves it’s the same for pros who’ve been there, done that multiple times before.
ElkY took his Twitch viewers on a breathless roller coaster ride on the final table of the $2,100 No-Limit Hold’em SCOOP event, before crashing out in a sickening bad beat for a then-Twitch record of $79,000.
If you’ve never made a big final table, you can live it vicariously through the effusive Frenchman.
His excitement is contagious and you’ll live and breathe every hand with him – until the end when his girlfriend Jenny No is forced to entertain 17,000 viewers with a ‘mouse dance’ after ElkY disappears to compose himself.
2. D-Negs vs. Isildur1
Date: October 6, 2016
Starring: Jason Somerville and Daniel Negreanu
Watch it!:
In terms of Twitch star power, it doesn’t get much bigger than the time Daniel Negreanu joined Jason Somerville’s stream to dissect his win in the 2016 WCOOP H.O.R.S.E. Championship.
Poker pros might be aghast at Negreanu giving away his trade secrets for free, but railbirds lapped it up; over 40,000 people watched him talk strategy with cards-up for over three hours.
High-stakes phenom Viktor “Isildur1” Blom was on the final table too and, fittingly, the two superstars collided heads-up for the title. This might be a long ‘moment,’ but in terms of mixed-game strategy, it’s the best three hours you’ll ever get for free.
1. Hitting the Jackpot
Date: July 22, 2016
Starring: Mikhail “innerpsy” Shalamov and “SolidPenis”
Watch it!:
Spin & Go tournaments give you the chance to win life-changing money in a matter of minutes, but what does it actually feel like to hit the jackpot?
Find out as Mikhail “innerpsy” Shalamov narrates the action after one lucky PokerStars player finds himself playing live for a first-place prize of €250,000 on Twitch.
The player, who goes by the name “SolidPenis,” runs the gamut of emotions – shock, disbelief and elation – before trying to compose himself by slapping himself round the face and pouring water on his head.
A few hands later it’s all over, and the reaction from SolidPenis as he sees his balance jump to €250,330 is priceless. Could you handle the pressure?
Bubbling Under
The epic Twitch moments that didn’t quite make the cut
1. Winning a Major
Date: February 2017

People love huge scores on Twitch and they don’t come much bigger than when Austrian player TheFan83 took down the Sunday Million for $122,000.
2. Not the Laptop!
Date: September 2015
Watch it!: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Pvld16wcVA
PokerStars Online pros Celina Lin and Randy Lew prove that when you’re streaming live, anything can happen.
3. Ultimate Cooler
Date: September 2015
Watch it!: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeEPLzaN4TU
Mike “Timex” McDonald might be one of the world’s best players but can he escape when he’s dealt Jacks vs. Queens vs. Aces on a WCOOP final table?
4. F*** My Life!

Okay, so this isn’t strictly poker, but this is one of the funniest Twitch moments we’ve ever seen, courtesy of PokerStars pro Lex Veldhuis.
