Example Hands

The hand two pair features two cards of a matching rank along with another, separate two cards of a different matching rank. There is also an unrelated side card. An example of a strong two pair is aces and kings with a queen kicker:

  • A♠ A♦ K♣ K♥ Q♠
  • The two aces make the top pair while the two kings make the second pair

A lower two pair would be 10s and fives with an ace kicker:

  • 10♣ 10♦ 5♠ 5♥ A♦
  • The two 10s make the top pair while the two fives make the second pair

Two pair forms in several ways. Two pair often appears in Texas Hold’em when the hole cards have matching cards of the same rank on the board.

  • Hole cards of Q♠ 9♠ on a board of Q♦ 9♥ 4♣ 2♠ K♦ makes queens and nines with a king kicker
  • The complete hand is Q♠ Q♦ 9♠ 9♥ K♦

What Two Pair Beats and Loses To

Two pair beats one pair and high card. Two pair loses to three of a kind, a straight, a flush, a full house, four of a kind, a straight flush, and a royal flush.

Ties and Kickers

When two hands of two pair are involved at showdown, the winner is determined based on the highest pair. If aces and threes go up against kings and queens, the former hand wins because aces outrank kings.

The second pair determines the winning hand when the highest pairs match. If queens and jacks go up against queens and eights, the queens and jacks win because jacks outrank eights.

The kicker determines the winner when both pairs are identical. For example, kings and sevens with an ace kicker against kings and sevens with a queen kicker. The ace kicker outranks the queen kicker.

A split pot happens when more than one hand has the same rank of two pairs and kicker because everything is equal and suits are not relevant.

Two Pair Probability

Two pair is a common hand in poker. The chance of making two pair using the best five cards out of a total of seven cards in Texas Hold’em is around 23.5%.

Two Pair Across Variants

Two pair ranks the same across every high-hand poker game, including Texas Hold’em and Omaha. The two pair hand ranking also does not change in Short Deck Hold'em even though it uses a 36-card deck. Two pair ranks differently in lowball games such as Razz and 2-7 Triple Draw as the lowest hand wins. In lowball poker, a pair counts against a low hand.
