When you imagine an online casino, one of the first games that springs to mind is likely roulette. The gleam of the silver or gold, the blur of colours as the wheel spins round and round, the click-clack of the ball as it bounces from slot to slot, deciding your fate. It’s one of the oldest and most played casino games in the world, and it appears prominently in film and television whenever a casino is shown. Roulette has inspired songs, film scenes, and pop art and brought many people to the casino to get that “classic” gambling experience. Roulette is a great equaliser in that you have no more or less chance of winning than the famous actor sitting at the table next to you. Film and Television

The spin of a roulette wheel is an excellent way to build tension and suspense in a movie moment. From James Bond to Casablanca, that little wheel spins, and closeups of the actor’s faces ensue, capturing the emotions etched in every feature. Not only is the roulette wheel a great way to reveal how any given character is really feeling and build a little suspense, but it can also be an excellent plot point.

The TV show Wheel of Fortune is one of the most famous to have ever hit the air, and its “take a chance and spin the wheel” format is definitely inspired by the most well-known of all spinning wheels, roulette. The show was essentially a bigger and flashier version of the casino game in which you can win prizes rather than chips, but essentially, the concept is exactly the same.

Sean Connery, often considered the most notable James Bond actor, was well known for how much he enjoyed roulette in real life. His most well-known roulette story involves an incredible winning streak where he raked in those chips seventeen times (yes, 17 times) in a row by netting it all on black. 

Art and Literature

Roulette is mentioned in more books than could ever possibly be counted, and authors often use the game as a way to show a character’s devil-may-care attitude or willingness to take a big chance on the unknown and how wonderful it can be when that chance pays off. Roulette can be a contributing factor to or the focus of the plot, depending on the effect that the author is going for.

Art is another aspect of pop culture in which roulette can have an enormous influence and impact. Artists take inspiration from all kinds of things, from their latest breakup to a pond they happened upon on their morning stroll or maybe even a big win they had while playing their favourite casino game. The colours red and black are strong and emotive ones and indicate confidence and decisiveness. They can be interpreted as aggressive colours, which may help an artist portray a feeling or emotion they need to let out in the artwork.

Gaming

We are referring here to video and console gaming, not the gambling industry. Roulette has inspired entire video games and has become a component in many game mechanics and scenes, adding some “real life” texture to the experience for the gamer.
