A word of advice: don’t ever doubt Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey. When Negreanu offered even money on himself or Ivey to win a bracelet at this year’s World Series of Poker, many scoffed. Oh, how they chortled at the Canadian Team PokerStars Pro’s proposition, one that invited bets of at least $5,000 all the way up to a whopping $1million. With 49 of the summer’s 65 WSOP events in the books, there were no bracelets. The pressure on the Negreanu/Ivey dream team was rising.

Then this happened just now…

It’s quite a story for Ivey, so often labelled the best poker player of his generation, to win his tenth WSOP bracelet in the $1,500 Eight-Game Mix, a title that came with $167,332. But even he conceded afterwards that the result was “nice for Daniel”.

Quite how much Negreanu netted from the prop bet is unclear. What we do know is that no-one offered to wager the maximum million bucks, but there was plenty of action under that.

Those on the wrong side of the line had a fearsome sweat in this event as Negreanu himself made it all the way to 9th out of the 485-strong field (for $9,014 pocket change, incidentally). When they were down to 12, Negreanu had his prop bet foremost in mind. He Tweeted:

After busting, he went home to sweat the final table and cheer on Ivey.

Ivey, of course, got the job done, but it was clear that as well as the joy of winning bracelet number 10 – which puts him in double figures with legends like Doyle Brunson, Phil Hellmuth and Johnny Chan – there was considerable relief at bringing the prop bet home to a successful conclusion.

Speaking to wsop.com he said: “I said either me or him were going to win (a gold bracelet) and we took even money. Me and him were both very deep in this tournament. This was a great opportunity. The tournaments are dying down. There’s not too many left. I knew I had to get this one, or else it was going to be pretty tough from here.”

Congrats on the win, Phil. And if you lost your bet with Daniel Negreanu, he’ll see you at the Rio tomorrow.
