Today is a very special day in the poker community. The second of February, aka 7-2, is International Bluff Day.
This is a celebration of all that makes poker an exceptional game. We’re bringing you light-hearted, bluff-based entertainment, and asking you to share your finest bluffy stories.
The philosophy of the bluff
In poker, as in life, we don’t have much say when it comes to the cards we’re dealt. What we do have control over, is how we play those cards.
You may get dealt a hand like 7-2, but it’s up to you what you do with it. The way you play makes all the difference, and bluffing sits at the heart of this.
Bluffing has been around a very long time. You can enjoy the video fable of the Origin of the Bluff here.
The beautiful art of bluffing
Bluffing is an art form. The best players in the game paint pictures for their opponents to admire. They write stories for the other players to read, grandiose tales that they are holding a certain hand.
But these works of art are but a beautiful deception.
I wrote an article last year about the best and worst poker bluffs in history, which touched on the very fine line between a good bluff and a bad bluff. Sometimes the only difference is whether the other player folds. You can check out that article on bluffing here.
Many of the top pros make insane moves that seem unimaginable to average players. It can be difficult to tell whether these bluffs, which often involved hundreds of thousands of dollars, are driven by genius or insanity. Are these pros simply working on an entirely different level of thought?

Learning how and when to bluff
Bluffing is an important aspect of poker. Without it, you’re forced only to play when you have the best hands.
But to bring bluffing into your game, you need to learn how and when to bluff. Check out PokerStars School for all kinds of strategy advice, including:
