Learn To Play Ansagrams
Ansagrams has been on the market since 2021, and this game is now one of the most beloved family quiz games on the market. In Ansagrams, you’ll be testing your general knowledge and word skills, and everyone from the age of 10 and up can join in the fun. If you have three players or more or a collection of three teams or more, you’ll be able to play Ansagrams.
Basic Overview of Ansagrams
Ansagrams is a game of cards that contains more than 500 questions. Each card has five questions on the front and a letter on the back. To get ahead in the game, players must attempt to answer all five of the questions on the card, but also consider the letter on the back of the card as they must take those five letters and anagram them into a five-letter word. If you are the first player to get this right, you will win the card. Be the first player to spell a three-letter word with the cards you’ve won, and you will win the entire game.
Setup
The best thing about setting up this game is that there’s really not much to it. No complicated boards or pieces to put together. Everything comes in a small, hand-holdable box that’s also easy to travel with. What you get in the box is:
- The double-sided playing cards
- A comprehensive set of rules, which are all on a single page.
- The only other things you’ll need are:
- Pens or pencils and paper
- A stopwatch or timer app on your phone
How Ansagrams Works
It’s probably best to have a trial round or two before you begin to play for points. Even though the game is very easy, it’s good to get your bearings, especially if there are younger children playing along with you.
Choose a quizmaster who will not technically “play” but watches over and runs the game while the other players try to win the round.
The quiz master begins by selecting a card. The quiz master will then read out each question while the players write down the first letter of each answer to attempt to make up words. You might be able to see where this is going. The players have to use their 5 letters to spell the secret 5-letter word at the bottom of the card to win the round.
Players will have 30 seconds to figure their cards out. If no one manages it in that timeframe, the quiz master will be allowed to give a hint to help. If no one gets the answer even after that, the round goes unwon, and the players move on.
When a player has figured out the answer, they must say ANSAGRAMS out loud. If they are the first and have the correct answers, they will win the round. If any player doesn’t succeed, they are frozen out of the round. If everyone is frozen out, the card is discarded.
Once everyone has had an equal chance to play, a new quiz master will be chosen, and gameplay will recommence.
Other Rules
There are a few other rules that help players to be a little bit tactical. No player may ever have more than three cards at a time. If you end up with more, you must discard until you only have three in your hand.
Discarded cards or any cards that players have failed to complete go back into the pot. If you win a card and decide that you’d rather have one of the cards in the pot, you can switch it out.
