Super Tuesday wraps and Thursday Thrill begins. Here’s all the latest from the Blowout Series on PokerStars

BLOWOUT BULLETIN

Simon “simon1471” Higgins: Held Teun Mulder at bay

Higgins too strong for Mulder: We were inches away from crowning a second double champion in Blowout Series when Teun “tinnoemulder” Mulder made it to the final two in the $530 Super Tuesday Special Edition (Event #33-H) and had the chance to add to his $5K High Roller title from last week. However, he was up against Simon “simon1471” Higgins, from the UK, a player with a fairly formidable record of his own — and Higgins this time was too strong. Higgins has won in WCOOP, in the High Roller Series, in the Bounty Builder Series, among numerous other accolades, both live and online, particularly at the highest stakes, and he put his name on the board in Blowout Series too. There were 508 entries of $530 apiece to this one, meaning Higgins earned $45,113 for his win. Mulder took $33,389 for second.

Boost to B4NKR0LL3R’s bankroll: Another UK-based player, Juanki “B4NKR0LL3R” Vecino, added to his ever-increasing bankroll overnight after claiming first place in the $2,100 8-Max PKO (Event #37-H). Vecino, who is originally from Spain, won the Sunday Million last February, for a career high score of $106K, and has also won in the Winter Series, the Bounty Builder Series and twice in the High Roller Club. This latest success was worth $69,202, including $42,203 in bounties, and came over a 145-entry, densely packed field of top names. Jamil “Jamil11” Wakil was second, “RaiseUpBlind” was third and “Anjeyyy” was fourth, ahead of Shawn “buck21” Buchanan, Conor “1_conor_b_1” Beresford and Niklas “Lena900” Astedt. All credit to Vecino for prevailing from that company.

“bdmaly” rising through the ranks: Prior to this Blowout Series, the biggest online score earned by Romania’s “bdmaly” was $1,588, earned after he came third in an $8 tournament on PokerStars in 2010. That’s all changed now. On January 2, bdmaly made a final table in the $109 buy-in Deep Stacks (Event #20-M) and banked $6,599 for finishing sixth, and then last night won the $55 NLHE Turbo Freezeout (Event #38-M) outright, for a new career high of $22,035. According to a Pocket Fives profile, bdmaly, who is based in Bucharest, has been playing small tournaments since 2009, mainly on PokerStars, but has recently found his form. Those two recent Blowout Series successes account for more than a third of all his tournament cashes. The high buy-in version of this event was also won by a player clearly on the up. Not much has been documented previously about “Azolla“, from the Netherlands, but he or she won $31,980 for beating a 347-entry field in the $530 buy-in turbo, with previous winner “DingeBrinker” in third and much decorated Stephen “woody1234321” Woodhead in second.

Stacks in the latest $5K: Bulgaria’s “millenial” already has a second-placed finish during this Blowout Series, in a $1K PKO freezeout that finished earlier this week, but he is currently sitting at the top of the overnight counts in the latest $5K High Roller, eyeing a first title. It won’t be easy. From the 103 entries, only seven players are left and it’s an exceptional field: Niklas “Lena900” Astedt is currently second, Bert “girafganger7” Stevens is in third, with Timothy “Tim0thee” Adams in fifth and Joao “Maza114” Vieira in sixth. milennial has a decent chip lead — 1.6 million more than Astedt, with blinds at 25K/50K — but it can change very quickly indeed. The conclusion will be streamed live tonight on the PokerStars Twitch channel.
