Next up, West Ham meet Newcastle at London Stadium on Sunday, October 8th. While Sheffield United take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 7th. Can this be the start of a winning streak for the Hammers? Will the Blades halt their terrible form?
Preview | September 30
West Ham's recent form has seen them drop down to 7th in the table. In terms of creating chances, West Ham rank 12th in the EPL for xG (expected goals) with an average of 1.42 xG in their last 5 games. From a defensive point of view, Lucas Paquetá has been the leader, accumulating 16 tackles and 8 interceptions over the season. On the attacking side, Jarrod Bowen has been their leader this season with 16 shots taken (11th in the EPL).
After failing to win in their last 6 games, Sheffield United are in 20th and need a win to avoid dropping down the table even further. The Blades have lost the possession battle 37% to 63% and the shot battle 42 to 112 over their last 5 matches. Sheffield United will need Oliver McBurnie's creativity in this match. His 1 assist so far this season is the highest number in the team.
West Ham-Sheffield United Prediction: 4-2
Goals are almost inevitable in this game. West Ham will be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on their opponent's defence, but they are prone to conceding goals themselves.
Did you know? A 3-0 hammering by West Ham in 2021 is the biggest victory for either team in the Premier League history of this matchup.

Nickname: The Blades
Stadium: Bramall Lane (Capacity 32,050)
Manager: Paul Heckingbottom (ENG)
Last Season: 2nd (Championship)
Survival will be the main aim for newly promoted side Sheffield United upon their return to the Premier League. With a relatively small transfer budget in comparison to most other teams in the league, it’s going to be an uphill battle for Paul Heckingbottom’s side. They will be looking to replicate their impressive form from the back end of the last campaign which saw them reach the FA Cup Semi-Final.
Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge nabbed six goals and five assists last season and will be looking to improve on that tally this time around. A menacing figure in the centre of the field at 193cm, the Blades will be hoping that Berge can step up to the plate on his return to the top-flight.
The 20-year-old Ivorian joined from Swedish club Hacken where he scored 23 goals in 54 games. He was also the top scorer in the Swedish top-flight with 12 goals in 14 matches. The Blades will be hoping the center-forward can adapt to the English game and provide them with some firepower in front of goal.
The return of Premier League football should result in a superb atmosphere at Bramall Lane. However, this one could be quite a cagey affair as the Blades get used to their new league and Palace amend to life without forward Wilfried Zaha.
It’s hard to see Sheffield United above the relegation spots with their small transfer budget. They’ll be heavily reliant on the contingent that got them back in the Premier League but unfortunately, it looks like the campaign will be a struggle without adding a few extra names to their squad that have proven their trade at the top level.
Have Sheffield United got what it takes to survive, or will the Yorkshire outfit drop back down to the Championship?
Sheffield United - To be relegated: 1.73
(odds correct as of July 31, 2023, and subject to change)
Did you know? Sheffield United’s fixture against Arsenal on January 22, 1927, was the first game to be broadcast on live radio. The BBC provided live commentary of the match and the Radio Times offered a map of the pitch with numbers so listeners could work out where the ball was. The goalkeeper’s area was called square one and this was the first use of the phrase ‘Back to Square One’.
