Casino Etiquette Dos and Don’ts

June 20, 2021

Nowadays, playing popular casino games like baccarat, roulette, and slots, can all be done from wherever a player likes, via an online casino.

In fact, countless modern gamers have gotten their start via online platforms, that offer many of the same amenities as land-based casinos.

However, if you’re one of those players who has never set foot inside a brick-and-mortar facility, a casino trip undoubtedly comes with its own set of specific rules and common behaviours. After all, when entering any new environment, it always helps to be aware of basic etiquette norms.

Here are just a few, simple nuggets of advice that can go a long way to making your first casino visit as fun as possible.

Do: Dress the Part

Casinos have long been associated with the fashion industry, an ideal location for both men and women to show off their gorgeous gowns and sharp suits while engaging in thrilling table games.

Just take pop culture icon James Bond for example. You’ll be hard pressed to see 007 grace the casino floor in anything less than a sleek Tom Ford number.

Although the bright lights of Hollywood may depict casino style as extravagant and luxurious, the truth is that dress code largely depends on what type of establishment you visit and where it is located.

While some adhere to specific regulations concerning clothing, others have no requirements at all. A good rule of thumb is to research the casino beforehand, to understand what may be expected.

Let’s just say that someone attending the historic Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco may not don the same outfit as a person visiting a more casual gaming facility.

Don’t: Create Unnecessary Distractions

While casinos are filled with all types of gamers, some more serious than others, every customer deserves to play their games in a calm environment, free of loud noises and distractions.

Of course, you can visit a casino and have a great time, but keep in mind that when attention is drawn to you, someone’s gameplay could be thrown off in the process.

Additionally, visitors should leave their cameras back at the hotel, as many locations do not permit customers to snap unlimited photo content or take selfies while on the gaming floor.

Although casinos are, in their nature, filled with a number of diverse sounds, you can play a small part in improving someone’s gaming experience by limiting unnecessary distractions.

Although they may look alike on the inside, casinos often have their own unique set of rules

Do: Listen, Respect, and Tip the Dealer

The dealer plays a hugely important role in any casino and must be listened to and respected from start to finish.

After all, without dealers, casinos would not be able to run. Even if they happen to make a minor mistake during play, correct them politely without becoming frustrated.

In the same way, when a dealer directs a game, for example announcing bets are now over in roulette, adhere to his or her command.

Although you may not be accustomed to tipping a virtual dealer in a round of online Live Blackjack, leaving a small monetary reward on a real-life table is common practice.

However, pay attention to the country’s laws where the casino is located, as some establishments do not permit employees to receive gratuity.

Don’t: Ask the Dealer or Other Players for Strategy Advice

Giving unsolicited advice or asking for tips in the midst of play is normally frowned upon.

Because each person typically has their own way of playing, focusing on your own individual game is the best way to avoid wide-eye glares from frustrated fellow players.

The same goes for the dealer, whose job it is to move the game along, not act as an instructor.
