Serpent Gold Review – A Jungle Slot Packed with Hidden Treasures

September 10, 2025

Serpent Gold takes PokerStars players deep within the jungle for a snake-filled online casino adventure with Octoplay’s signature Hold & Win mechanics.

With snakes slithering into play, clusters of Golden Coins locking onto the reels, and jackpots that can rise up to 5,000x the bet, this is an online slot where the action can suddenly slither into different directions. Rather than focusing on free spin rounds or complex bonus features, Serpent Gold focuses on a combination of Golden Coins, Snake modifiers, and the Hold & Win feature that expands the grid from 5×4 to 6×6. This design makes it feel like an epic adventure, which is fast, progressive and unpredictable.

Theme and Design: Welcome to the Jungle

Serpent Gold’s reels sit in the middle of an Amazon-inspired ruin, hidden deep within the jungle. A snake statue looms over the grid, with trees and other plants creating an area that looks unvisited for centuries. The visuals definitely make this slot feel mysterious, like something straight out of Indiana Jones.

The reel symbols also fall in line with this theme. The low-paying tier is formed from playing card icons, ranging from 10 through to Ace, styled to fit the overall jungle aesthetic. Higher-paying symbols add to the adventure, with maps of lost expeditions, explorer’s hats, chests filled with treasure, and golden compasses. The Serpent Wild symbol acts as the slot’s most important symbol, appearing with a magical glow and capable of offering the slot’s biggest payouts. The soundtrack matches the visuals by adding tribal-style wind instruments and subtle jungle sounds, building on the hidden temple theme without taking away from the gameplay.

Core Gameplay: Unlocking Features

Serpent Gold’s base game is simple, using a 5×4 reel layout with 20 paylines. Wins are always counted from left to right along predefined paylines when symbols line up correctly. But what really makes the slot stand out from a design perspective is its Golden Coin cluster system and the three Snake modifiers that have the ability to change how the session plays out.

Golden Coins

When Golden Coins appear, they show cash values that range between 1x and 10x the bet. When two or more of these Golden Coins land next to each other, either side by side or stacked, they form a cluster. Once a cluster forms, it locks onto the reels for three spins, and every new Golden Coin that shows up resets the counter back to three. This means clusters can grow steadily throughout the game, and the mechanic even carries any progress across sessions, locking clusters in place.

Snake Modifiers

The Snake symbols interact with these clusters in several ways. The Collect Snake (Red) moves in to gather the value of any cluster it touches, and the Clone Snake (Green) duplicates Golden Coins, which allows clusters to expand into new reel positions. The Double Snake (Blue) increases the value of all coins within a cluster, doubling them up to a maximum of 100x. This relationship between the coins and snakes makes every spin feel exciting, with the possibility of the game going in a different direction.

Paytable and Symbols

The paytable of Serpent Gold mixes traditional card icons with jungle-inspired treasures, with each symbol having their own clearly defined paytable tiers. The lower-paying symbols are 10, J, Q, K, and A. These pay 0.50x for three, 1.00x for four, and 3.00x for five in a line. For example, five card icons on a £1.00 bet will return £3.00.

Premium Symbols

Stepping up in value, the treasure map and the explorer’s hat both payout 1.00x for three, 2.00x for four, and 6.00x for five. The chest increases the rewards to 1.50x for three, 3.00x for four, and 10.00x for five. The compass offers the highest payout among the premium symbols, however, worth 3.00x for three, 6.00x for four, and 25.00x for five.

Serpent Wild

At the very top sits the Serpent Wild, which not only substitutes for all other symbols except Golden Coins and Snake symbols, but also carries the largest individual payout of 50.00x if the player is lucky enough to land five of them.

Hold & Win: The Signature Feature

The Hold & Win feature is the core feature of Serpent Gold. It’s triggered when the serpent statue above the reels collects coins thrown from Golden Coin symbols during spins. Once triggered, the entire layout shifts to a larger 6×6 grid, and the player is given three spins to start the bonus with.

During the bonus round, the only symbols that can land are Golden Coins, Snake symbols, or empty spaces. Each time a Golden Coin or Snake appears, the spin counter resets back to three, keeping the round going. The Golden Coins lock into place throughout this feature, and their values are paid out at the end of the round. Hold & Win keeps going until no new symbols land or if the grid fills completely.

This mechanic offers plenty of suspense and can extend gameplay. Watching the grid grow larger, the coins being collected, and the snakes changing up the gameplay offers plenty of opportunities to amplify the slot experience.

Jackpot Tiers

The Hold & Win feature is also where Serpent Gold’s five jackpots come into play. These jackpots are unlocked depending on how many symbols are locked into the reels during the bonus feature.

The Mini Jackpot pays out when 10 symbols are locked in place and pays 25x the bet. The Minor Jackpot is triggered with 20 locked symbols and pays 50x, while the Major Jackpot needs 25 locked symbols and pays 100x. The second biggest one is the Grand Jackpot, which climbs to 250x for 30 locked symbols, and the most valuable, the Ultimate Jackpot, pays 5,000x the stake, triggered by filling the entire 36-symbol grid. These jackpots sit alongside the values collected from Golden Coins and the Snake modifiers, providing plenty of payout opportunities for players.

When exploring a new state, country, or city, it isn’t a stretch to assume that a casino, or multiple casinos, could be located within a five-mile radius of a tourist’s hotel room. However, many of the people who pay visits to these modern and glamorous establishments, whether visitors or locals, probably do not realize how rich in history they are. Casinos, and their classic casino games, have travelled through ancient lands and even virtual frontiers to arrive where they are today. Here we take a look at the places and spaces casinos have inhabited, showcasing the ways in which these world-famous facilities have reinvented themselves down through the ages. INSERT IMAGE HERE >>>> https://ibb.co/Lz9Y64G >>>> Photo Casinos and their games have sure come a long way over the years Gaming in Ancient Times Before casinos even existed, people were playing betting-style games with friends for entertainment. The earliest known record of this comes from China in 2300 B.C. where playing cards are said to have been invented and in Egypt in 1500 B.C. where dice were first crafted. Although historians have not been able to narrow down the exact dates that this type of gaming came to be, there are some milestones we are 100% sure of – namely, the location and time period of the first official casino establishment. The World’s First Casino It wasn’t until 1638 that casino games were given a place to call home, with the opening of the world’s first casino, the Casino di Venezia or ‘Il Ridotto’ in Venice, Italy. Situated on the gorgeous expanse of the Grand Canale, it was originally built as a venue for theatre performances called the Theatre Saint Moses. During shows, patrons would be entertained by dancing and music, and during intermissions, they would head to separate wings of the facility to play casino games. This Renaissance period saw visitors dressing particularly elegantly, the women donning glitzy gowns and the men sharp black suits. This one-of-a-kind environment sparked a casino craze throughout Italy, whereby over a hundred more gaming establishments opened up all around the country. In fact, the very origins of the word ‘casino’ belong to Italy as well, with the inspiration coming from ‘casetta’ or the Italian word meaning ‘little house’. In 2021, this antiquated building is still standing in the exact same spot it was in the 17th century and boasts over 600 slot machines, as well as popular table games like Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat, and more. Upon one visit to the historic Il Ridotto, visitors will quickly see how unique the décor is when compared to the casinos of today. 19th Century European Establishments Following the birth of Venetian gaming houses, casinos became widespread in all of continental Europe, represented by extravagant buildings that resembled intricately decorated palaces. Some cities where this was evident included Baden-Baden and Wiesbaden in Germany, as well as Paris and Monte-Carlo. It was at this time that the ‘little wheel’ or Roulette became a predominant activity in the gaming houses of the French capital. On the other side of the pond, however, dusty old saloons located in states like Kansas and Louisiana were the setting of casino game entertainment. The Rise of Las Vegas Given its high-profile reputation around the world today, it’s hard to believe that there was a point in time when Las Vegas didn’t have much to offer visitors in terms of swanky casino establishments. The story of Sin City’s transformation begins all the way back in 1905 when railroad workers came to work on different projects and later the construction of the massive Hoover Dam. During their breaks, these laborers would play card games and bet. However, casino gaming was illegal in Nevada from 1910 to 1931, when, after a 21-year ban, it was relegalized. By the time this finally occurred, Vegas had already made a name for itself as a place where locals enjoyed gaming entertainment year-round. The modern Las Vegas that we know today didn’t come about until the mid-1940s with the success of one of the first casinos, El Rancho Vegas. From here, an entire host of other facilities opened up along Highway 91, or what is now commonly referred to as ‘The Strip’. People from all over the world began to visit Vegas, wondering what the casino boom was all about. Famous artists like Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra also arrived, to entertain the new influx of local and international tourists. Fast forward a few decades to the late 80s and early 90s and Vegas started to earn its official title as the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’ with shiny new mega hotels and massive casino resorts. Nowadays, Las Vegas receives over 40 million tourists a year. However, the internet boom of the early 2000s caused the entire industry to become even more revolutionized. In perhaps the biggest milestone imaginable, online gaming platforms have opened doors for casino businesses to have huge virtual presences. If a person wants to visit a casino in 2021, all it takes is a reliable internet connection and the device of their choice to make it happen. The internet has also enabled online casino platforms to provide a more expansive list of gaming titles than traditional establishments are able to, since they are limited in terms of physical space. For example, casino sites of today often boast dozens of different themed-slot games. Players can search these virtual lobbies via filters on their desktop computer, laptop, or mobile phone in order to find the best casino game to suit their gaming preferences. Additionally, classic table games like Blackjack and Roulette feature original gameplay thanks to the Live Casino versions which are available. The Live Casino experience transports players into a real-life casino studio with dealers speaking to players in real-time. In a Live Roulette session, for instance, croupiers spin the wheel, respond to betting requests, and interact with players like they would in real life. With new waves of technology shaking up the industry all the time, these casino services are poised to become more and more advanced as time moves on.

PokerStars Jackpot Hunt

Players can also enter into the PokerStars Jackpot Hunt promo. By adding an extra £0.20 to the total bet, there’s a chance to trigger the Jackpot Game. The feature begins with 30 balls cascading into prize sections, with players able to collect cash prizes or progress towards the jackpot that resets at £867.64. Golden balls can also show up, each counting as five regular balls, adding extra potential to the hunt.

Snake Progress System

A really unique element of Serpent Gold is the Snake Progress feature. Each time a Snake symbol lands on the reels, it adds points to the progress bars. There’s two levels to complete, each needing 25 points to trigger. Completing the first level unlocks the Clone Snake, which can then start showing up on the reels, while completing the second level unlocks the Double Snake, which doubles the payouts of clusters.

The progress of the system is saved across play sessions at the same betting level, making it feel more like a continuous quest rather than having to start from the bottom each time. When multiple snakes land in a single spin, the Clone Snake will always come first, followed by the Double, and finally the Collect Snake.

Other Hold & Win Titles from Octoplay

Octoplay’s Hold & Win has quickly become one of the most popular systems on PokerStars, which has led them to release several more titles with the three-spin format.  While Serpent Gold leans on its theme of snakes and jungle treasure, other titles like Shaolin Panda and Flame & Fortune show just how varied online slot themes can be, even when sharing similar mechanics.

Shaolin Panda

Shaolin Panda mixes Asian-inspired design with playful martial arts flair reminiscent of the Kung Fu Panda movies. Just like Serpent Gold, the Hold & Win feature begins with three free spins, resetting each time a Golden Coin or Jackpot Coin lands. The panda mascot then locks onto the middle reel and begins collecting coins and jackpot values up to 10,000x the bet.

Above the reels are the floating five jackpots, starting at 25x for the Mini and scaling up to 500x for the Grand, with each one able to grow depending on how many coloured coins land. There’s also three other unique features for players to trigger: Reel Expansion, which increases the layout to 6×5, Mystery, which adds extra coins directly onto the reels, and Multipliers, which boost all coin prizes on a reel by up to 5x.

Flame & Fortune

In Flame & Fortune, players are teleported to a dragon’s nest. Golden Coins carry values of 1x up to 200x, but they can only be collected when the Treasure Dragon symbol appears, filling an entire reel and collecting all visible prizes. A Dragon Multiplier sits above the reels, starting at 1x and increasing whenever the Plus Coin symbols land, up to a maximum of 10x.

This multiplier adds not only in the base game but also during Hold & Win, where it multiplies all locked coin payouts at the end of the round. Hold & Win begins with its standard three spins, resetting when Golden Coins or Plus Coins appear, and always guarantees at least one Golden Coin and one Treasure Dragon at the start. With jackpots reaching up to 3,000x the stake, and progress saved between sessions, Flame & Fortune adds a fiery twist to the  Hold & Win system.

Final Verdict: Mysterious Theme, Strong Features

Serpent Gold Hold & Win is a slot that not only feels like an epic adventure, but also plays like one too. The jungle visuals and serpent animations give it plenty of character, while the Golden Coin clusters and Snake modifiers keep the base game fun between Hold & Win triggers.

The expanding 6×6 grid during the bonus feature is where the pace speeds up, especially with jackpots in play. While the RTP of 92.76% is on the lower end for a PokerStars slot, the progression system and layered features keep the action slithering along between payouts.
