FABIO PELUSO WINS €2,200 HIGH ROLLER

Reporting by PokerStars Media Coordinator Jen Mason.

In a one-two victory for Italy, Fabio Peluso and Federico Cirillo chopped the top two prizes from the €399,360 total prize pool, generated by the 208 entries in the €2,200 ESPT & UKIPT Malaga High Roller.

In an early battle between the two PokerStars Ambassadors on the final table, short-stacked Simon Wiciak was the first to be eliminated by his neighbour Sam Grafton, who woke up with ace-queen when Wiciak shoved with seven-eight suited from the small blind. His live cards even hit a straight on the turn, but Grafton rivered a higher one to send the Frenchman out in 6th (€17,400).

Grafton finished third

Artus Giménez was next out (5th for €22,200), his pocket aces cracked by a rivered straight for fellow Spaniard Sergio Leyva (all-in on the turn when the straight was still a draw). Leyva’s good fortune was not to last, however, and he soon lost an all-in preflop flip against Fabio Peluso. Despite hitting a set of nines on the flop, Leyva had to watch Peluso river a straight of his own with ace-queen suited and send him to collect €28,800 for 4th place.

Three-handed play lasted much longer than the other stages of the final, with Peluso pulling away from his rivals Grafton and Cirillo after a level (three million chips to Grafton’s two and Cirillo’s one). Grafton’s final hand saw him move in from the small blind with king-queen off-suit when button Cirillo folded, only to find a dominating ace-king in the hand of Peluso in the big blind. Undaunted, after outlasting most of a 208-strong High Roller field – and picking up €37,500 for third place – Grafton leapt straight into Day 1C of the €1,100 Main Event (as did four other finalists!).

Heads up, with nearly even stacks, an all-Italian battle for dominance continued for a couple of levels. Both sporting bucket hats, the last two players chatted at the table, while chips passed back and forth. Still almost level, they chopped the prize money, leaving €3,500 to play for. A final preflop all-in flip – jacks vs the ace-queen of Cirillo – and the trophy was Peluso’s.

Final table results

1 Fabio Peluso (Italy) – €70,630
2 Federico Cirillo (Italy) – €67,130
3 Sam Grafton (United Kingdom), PokerStars Ambassador – €37,500
4 Sergio Leyva (Spain) – €28,800
5 Artus GimĂ©nez (Spain) – €22,200
6 Simon Wiciak (France), PokerStars Ambassador – €17,400
