Home / Uncategorized / SCOOP 2015: Mustapha “lasagnaaammm” Kanit brings vintage series to a close

And suddenly it’s all over. After 15 days, 46 events, 138 tournaments, and $76,530,051.72 in prize money, the 2015 edition of the Spring Championship of Online Poker is finally at an end. But looking back one suspects it will enter poker’s history books with gilt edges, remembered for being one of the most memorable SCOOP series in years.

If it wasn’t Sorel Mizzi’s win on opening day, or that of Mohsin Charania, it was the start of a two week spell that would go on to give Jason Mercier three SCOOP titles and the Player of the Series title. More on that in a minute.

If the quality of winner is a sign of quality, then SCOOP was 2015 was a vintage year.

As well as Mercier others found that their form was peaking at the right time. While Mercier scored three plenty of others scored a double, including Luke “lb6121” Schwartz, dragonwarior, marek_heinz, Mike “SirWatts” Watson, Nicolas “niccc” Chouity, Woody “plplaya” Deck, and Victor “puropoker123” Lemos.

Then there were the other winners, the type to make you say “wow, he’s good online too”, if you didn’t already realised that.

The likes of Tudor Purice, Billy “b8chatz” Chattaway, Chris “NigDawG” Brammer, WCOOP main event winner Fedor “CrownUpGuy” Holz, Dzmitry “Colisea” Urbanovich, Emil “Maroonlime” Patel (more on him in a second), Ilari “Fabahaba” Tahkokallio, James “Andy McLEOD” Obst, Sam “Str8$$$Homey” Greenwood, and Stefan “mindgamer” Jedlicka.

Of course there were others, all of which you can see on the dedicated results page, with links to click that will take you through to their story.

But SCOOP concluded in the early hours with the Main Event, with the high version won by Mustapha “lasagnaaammm” Kanit.

Martin Harris reported on the final table, which I know he would have enjoyed because he gets a kick out of the “mmm” part of Kanit’s username. But he also pointed out a few things that we’ve all noticed in Kanit – the evolution of his game, from regular cashes on the Italian Poker Tour before a jump up to the European Poker Tour level, which culminated in his win in the Super High Roller event in Monaco a few weeks ago. As far as form is concerned, Kanit has hit a rich vein, this latest win worth more than $1.3 million. Perfect timing with the World Series around the corner.

I’d recommend reading the full report of Kanit’s win, where you’ll see what kind of opposition he was up against, including Emil Patel who would be his heads-up opponent. Some great performances from some great players.

There were of course three versions of the Main Event. While Kanit won the High the “M” version was taken down by Australian Tom “tollgate” Grigg, who earned $609,206.86 as part of a two way deal with Azn1nvas1on. The “L” meanwhile was won by Apostolis “apostolis20” Bechrakis who collected $203,176.89 for top spot.

But as far as the leader board was concerned Jason Mercier had early and never really let go. He finished top of the overall standings with 680 points, some 35 points ahead of second placed vovtroy, who was 20 points ahead of double winner Mike Watson on 625. It means a trophy for Mercier, and a ticket to the PCA in 2016. As if he might have considered skipping it.

There were four categories of leader board though, so plenty up for grabs.

Puropoker123, who earned two wins during SCOOP, won the high, while Gambler4444 took the Medium title. JagaForever did the same in the Low category, with the winner at each level receiving a trophy, a WCOOP Main Event ticket and $5,000 in cash.
Find the full standings on the SCOOP 2015 homepage.
