Aston Villa – Season Preview

Nickname: The Villans
Stadium: Villa Park (Capacity 42,682)
Manager: Steven Gerrard (ENG)
Last Season: 14th

Notable Transfers

IN OUT
Diego Carlos (Sevilla) €31m Matt Targett (Newcastle) €17.5m
Philippe Coutinho (Barcelona) €20m Trezeguet (Trabzonspor) €4m
Boubacar Kamara (Marseille) Free Conor Hourihane (Derby) Free
One to Watch: Jacob Ramsey

After a breakthrough season with some headline-grabbing performances, Jacob Ramsey will look to continue fulfilling his huge potential. The 21-year-old Villa academy product is a powerful ball carrier from midfield and a real goal threat, having found the back of the net six times last campaign. Villa fans should be excited about the development Ramsey can make under the guidance of one of the Premier League’s all-time great midfielders.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 4-3-3

Steven Gerrard will hope to further instill his preferred playing style, which was so successful at Rangers. Gerrard will demand a lot of intensity in the middle of the park and expect a lot of attacking support from Villa’s threatening full-backs. There are plenty of options going forward for the Villa boss; he could opt for dual number 10s, with Philippe Coutinho and Emi Buendía being the exciting candidates for that role. Or give Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins more time to gel as a strike partnership, which showed promising signs at the end of last season.

First Five Fixtures

Bournemouth (A) In the Cherries’ last season in the Premier League in 2019/20 they took the maximum six points from Villa, winning 2-1 both times.
Everton (A) The most played top flight fixture. Villa haven’t lost in the last six meetings with the Toffees and took six points from them last season.
Crystal Palace (A) Gerrard versus Vieira. Villa won this fixture 2-1 last season, but it’s always tough to call with these two evenly-matched squads.
West Ham (H) Since Villa secured survival in 2020 with a tense draw, they haven’t taken a point from the Hammers.
Arsenal (A) This looks a tricky trip to the Emirates to meet an Arsenal side who did the double over Villa last season and have strengthened since.

Aston Villa Prediction: 9th

With a full pre-season to work with his squad, and having made his mark on the personnel, Gerrard (and the Villa owners) will be expecting noticeable improvements on last season’s 14th place finish. After some astute Summer transfer business, on top of an already expensive squad, the Villa Park faithful won’t be happy unless the top half of the table is breached. That looks an achievable goal. If Coutinho can get back to his best, new signing Diego Carlos can bolster the backline, and Leon Bailey can avoid injury, then it could be an exciting ride for Birmingham’s biggest club.

Can Gerrard work wonders and fast-track Villa’s dynamic squad into the Champions League?

Aston Villa Top Four Finish: 19.00

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Steven Gerrard scored more goals against Villa (13 in 27 games in all competitions) than any other team he faced in his playing career.
