Nickname: The Magpies
Stadium: St James’ Park (Capacity 52,338)
Manager: Eddie Howe (ENG)
Last Season: 4th
Newcastle enjoyed a tremendous 2022/23 campaign, reaching their first domestic cup final in 23 years and securing a top four Premier League finish after winning 19 and losing just five of their 38 games. With their squad bolstered further during the summer, can the Magpies continue to soar this season as they prepare for the challenge of Champions League football?
Carrying a €70m price tag, Isak became Newcastle United’s record signing when he traded Sociedad for St James’ Park in August 2022, and the Swedish hitman soon acclimatised to the Premier League. His first season on Tyneside was disrupted by a hamstring injury, but he still managed to net an impressive 11 goals in 22 appearances for the Magpies. Expect an even bigger haul from the 23-year-old this term, as Newcastle look to solidify their top four status.
It speaks volumes about Newcastle United’s growing stature that they were able to capture one of AC Milan’s best players this summer in the shape of defensive midfielder Tonali. Capped 14 times already by Gli Azzurri at the age of just 22, Tonali looks sure to bring a great deal of quality and technical prowess to the middle of the park for the Magpies.
Newcastle routed Villa 4-0 at St James’ Park last season, but later succumbed to a 3-0 loss in April’s reverse fixture. The Magpies will be hoping to avenge that defeat here on the opening day of the new campaign.
Eddie Howe has done a remarkable job at St James’ Park since taking the reins midway through the 2021/22 campaign and has again recruited smartly in the summer to strengthen his squad for the big season that lies ahead. There’s nothing to suggest that the rapidly rising won’t have another strong season, though they could just fall short of the top four this time around as they look to balance Premier League commitments and their long-awaited return to Europe’s premier club competition.
Will Champions League exertions affect Newcastle’s domestic campaign, or can the Magpies back up last season’s fourth place finish?
Newcastle United - Top 4 Finish: 2.63

Did you know? Newcastle United have been crowned champions of England on four occasions in their history. However, you have to go back to the 1926/27 campaign for the Magpies’ last top-flight triumph.
