Manchester City – Season Preview

Nickname: The Citizens
Stadium: Etihad Stadium (Capacity 55,017)
Manager: Pep Guardiola (ESP)
Last Season: 1st

Notable Transfers

Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund) €60m Raheem Sterling (Chelsea) €56.2m
Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United) €48.8m Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal) €52.2m
Stefan Ortega (Arminia Bielefeld) Free  Fernandinho (Athletico Paranaense) Free
One to Watch: Erling Haaland

He’s one of the most sought-after players in the world, so Man City fans will be delighted that the Norwegian will be wearing a sky-blue shirt this season. They’ll be hoping the mercurial striker will hit the ground running and give Guardiola’s squad the clinical edge they’ve been missing in Europe.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 4-3-3

Pep Guardiola likes to innovate, but the 4-3-3 formation is the foundation of the Spaniard’s attacking style. Expect Haaland to slot in at the head of a fluid attacking three that pressures from the front. With Fernandinho out of the door, Rodri will be a vital part of breaking down counter-attacks and providing his defence with much-needed protection. Of course, that leaves Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden to drop into pockets of space and dictate the game, while City’s marauding full backs create width high up the pitch.

First Five Fixtures

West Ham (A) Man City won 2-1 at home and drew 2-2 away last season and haven’t lost to West Ham in the Premier League since 2015.
Bournemouth (H) This is the first time these sides have faced off domestically for over two years. On that occasion, Man City won 2-1.
Newcastle (A) Man City despatched Newcastle home and away last season, beating them 0-4 at St James’ Park and 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
Crystal Palace (H) Crystal Palace were one of two sides to beat Man City at home last season. They left Manchester with an impressive 0-2 victory.
Nottingham Forest (H) Man City and Forest have met six times in the Premier League, with Forest boasting a 2-1 winning record. The last game was a 1-1 draw back in 1995.

Man City Prediction: 1st

Man City and Liverpool have a titanic rivalry that goes down to the wire season after season. This campaign should be no different, but the Citizens’ have even more strength in depth thanks to the additions of Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips. With Haaland expected to set the Premier League alight, the Norwegian could help the champions add to their impressive points hauls in the recent years. The fact that City only face two of the Big Six in their first ten fixtures means they can ease into their title defense from the off.

Can Man City see off yet another challenge from Liverpool, or will the Reds have too much for them?

Man City to win the Premier League: 1.55

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Manchester City hold the record for the fewest goals scored at home in a regular Premier League season. In the 2006/07 season, Man City only managed a paltry 10 goals at the City of Manchester Stadium.
