Manchester United – Season Preview

Nickname: The Red Devils
Stadium: Old Trafford (Capacity 74,879)
Manager: Erik Ten Hag (NED)
Last Season: 6th

Notable Transfers

IN OUT
Lisandro Martinez (Ajax) €57.4m Paul Pogba (Juventus) Free
Tyrell Malacia (Feyenoord) €15m Nemanja Matic (Roma) Free
Christian Eriksen (Brentford) Free Jesse Lingard (Nottingham Forest) Free
Juan Mata (Without Club) Released
Andreas Pereira (Fulham) €9.5m
One to Watch: Christian Eriksen

Several clubs were hunting the signature of Christian Eriksen after the Dane’s return with Brentford last term, and Man Utd will feel they’ve completed excellent business in capturing the 30-year-old on a free transfer. New boss Erik Ten Haag will hope Eriksen can build on the fine displays which he turned in for the Bees to give United more creative spark and threat at set-pieces.

Style of Play

Predicted Formation: 4-3-3

It’s difficult to predict quite how Manchester United will line-up under Ten Hag, as the Red Devils arguably don’t possess the right personnel to suit the Dutchman’s preferred energetic 4-3-3 system, which relies on players regularly switching positions in transition. One thing we can be fairly sure of is a return to the Old Trafford fold for midfielder Donny van der Beek, who played a prominent role for Ten Hag during his successful tenure at Ajax. He’ll work alongside Scott McTominay in United’s engine room, with Bruno Fernandez in advance of the pair.

First Five Fixtures

Brighton (H) Man Utd have won seven of the last eight meetings between the sides.
Brentford (A) Man Utd won 3-1 in last season’s corresponding fixture.
Liverpool (H) The aggregate score in last season’s meetings was 9-0 in Liverpool’s favour.
Southampton (A) Both sides have netted in seven of the last eight meetings between the teams.
Leicester City (A) The Red Devils are winless in their last five games against the Foxes, losing three.

Man United Prediction: 6th

Manchester United endured a dismal 2021/22 campaign, and supporters will be hoping that new manager Erik Ten Hag can start driving the club back in the right direction towards challenging for honors. The Dutchman has an almighty task on his hands though and is likely to need several transfer windows to rebuild the squad and bring in players who can both adapt and thrive under his philosophy. Too many of the current squad appear devoid of the quality and commitment needed to take a step forward this term and the Red Devils could be set for another disappointing 6th place finish.

Can Erik Ten Hag guide the Red Devils back into the top four?

Manchester Utd Top Four finish: 2.00

(odds correct as of July 22, 2022 and subject to change)

Did you know? Manchester United won 38 trophies including 13 Premier League titles during Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year managerial tenure at the club. Since his retirement in 2013, the Red Devils have managed to lift just three pieces of silverware.
