Different Roulette Bet Types

September 17, 2024

Roulette, in its many variations, is one game often offered by most online casinos. Before playing roulette, particularly for real money, players need to properly understand the different roulette bet types and their payout ratios.

Roulette Bet Types

Roulette bets are split into two main categories: inside and outside bets. These bets apply to all roulette variations and differ in terms of the range of numbers to bet on, betting limits and winning capacity. Players can have a go at either roulette bet in a myriad of reputable online casinos, but first, here is a proper look at them.

Inside Roulette Bets

As the name suggests, Inside Bets are wagers found on the inside of the numbered grid of a roulette table. The bets cover fewer numbers and are typically placed on individual numbers or unique combinations of the numbers.

Due to this, Inside Bets are at a higher risk and have significantly lower winning chances. On the upside, these wagers have a higher payout when players actually win them. Here are a few bets you can make inside the roulette wheel:

Straight Up

Players can bet a single number with this bet ranging from 1-36 and the 0 or 00 options. The chances of winning this bet are low; however, the payout is high at 35:1.

Street

This is a three-number bet that covers consecutive numbers on a row, for example, 1, 2, 3 or 7, 8, 9. Since the wager is based on three numbers, the payout for a street bet is 11:1.

Split

Split bets are spread across two adjacent numbers on the wheel. To place the bet, the player puts the chip on the line between two adjoining numbers, for example, 8 and 9, on the roulette wheel. It has a payout ratio of 17:1.

Six line

This wager covers six numbers or two lines of the table like 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12. Players place the chip on the edge of the line that separates the outside and inside bets.

Corner

Corner bets, also known as square wagers, are bets on four numbers on the roulette wheel. For this wager, the chip is placed on the intersection line between four numbers.

Outside Roulette Bets

Outside bets are found on the outside section of the roulette wheel layout and offer broader wagers that cover a whole category of numbers. These types of bets are ideal for beginners because they offer higher winning chances and have a broader coverage of the roulette table. On the downside, outside bets have a lower payout than inside bets.

There are five different types of outside bets, including:

Red and Black

Here, bets are made on whether the winning number will be either red or black. Red and Black bets pay out even money, meaning once they land a win, players get both their original bets and an equal sum.

Odd or Even

Players are required to bet on all odd or even numbers on the roulette table. This bet usually covers either 18 odds or 18 even numbers and pays out even money.

High or low

The numbers on the roulette wheel are split into low numbers (1-18) and high numbers (19-36). Players can bet on the ball landing on either the high or low numbers and, upon winning, receive an even sum.

Column

These are similar to dozens, as players can bet in 12 numbers on any of the three columns of a roulette wheel in a single round. The wager covers the entire column and has a payout ratio of 2 to 1. The numbers in each column are grouped into:

  • 1st column: 1, 4, 7, 10,13,16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34
  • 2nd column: 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26, 29, 32, 35
  • 3rd column: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 31, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36

Dozens

This type of bet requires players to wager on either the first (1-12), second (13-24) or third (25-36) set of twelve numbers.
